Describe your character's life before the Apocalypse: For a city boy born in the middle of Brooklyn, the water was William's calling; every chance they could his parents would take him down to Coney Island or to beaches out on Long Island, where he learned to swim and enjoy the water. After a four-year hitch in the Navy, he started working on boats and ferries back in New York City, working his way up from a greenhorn wrench on water taxis up to becoming first mate on a Long Island ferry, going between Long Island, NY and the Connecticut coast several times a week. All the while, he kept working to become a boat captain in his own right and eventually he got his captain's license and took charge of a Hudson River ferryboat, shuttling weekday commuters from Yonkers and points north down to the Big Apple and back during the week; after several years, he decided to move up the Hudson River, buying a small house south of Albany and becoming captain of the MV River Rose, a paddle-wheeler riverboat which allowed him to show people all the sights and sounds of the Hudson, from Albany all the way down to New York City and back.
What happened to your character on Outbreak Day?: On Outbreak Day, William Torrance was still ferrying people up and down the Hudson River as usual and was in the process of returning to the Port of Albany, where he kept the MV River Rose docked most days. However, what was unusual was that whenever he would call ahead to dock, he either couldn't get ahold of anyone or worse, he was told he couldn't dock at that location. Turning on the riverboat's radios soon gave him and the rest of the riverboat crew a clue as to what was going on and it wasn't pretty; practically every point along the Hudson, from New York City all the way up to Albany and beyond, was in the process of collapsing due to the myriad panics, rioting and mass lootings going on throughout the region. After very nearly deciding to just run the boat aground somewhere and take his and everyone's chances on land, they started picking up radio traffic from a location known simply as Site 1; knowing that they were north of the signal's probable direction, Torrance and his crew headed south, eventually pulling up stakes and docking at, for a near-hippie like him, would be the unlikeliest place imaginable....West Point, a/k/a Site 1.
Describe your character's life after the Apocalypse: Despite nearly getting chomped on several times during the first weeks there as the inhabitants fought to keep the garrison from being overrun, his skills as a boat mechanic were soon in need that first winter; indeed, some of the engineering spaces at West Point have gotten what everyone refers to as 'the Torrance touch', in which he's either torn down and rebuilt or outright jerry-rigged a solution to something. Despite his flippant sarcasm towards most everything (especially most everything military-related), he's become a part of the garrison, finding a little bit of sanity and stability in an insane, unstable world.
