They drove through the back roads, enjoying the country. Looking on at the mountains in the distance as the amount of loose walkers found on the side of the road seemed to be lacking. The two were at peace. Enjoying the ride in the safety of the vehicle. Both proving time and time again that neither could pose as a threat towards one another.
It's been a few days since Nava had picked up Otis off of the side of the street. He was vulnerable. Beaten down by the loss of his cabin. And she decided to pick him up. Despite him looking like a monster in his own right. She took him in. And for that, he will forever be grateful. He wouldn't bat an eye in protecting her when he can. The world may be a disaster. But these two, they didn't let that disaster spread to their brains and turn them into the walking dead. No, they are humane enough to still be capable of befriending someone in the apocalypse.
"I don't know the area now. I'm more of a south east man." He said smiling at her. "Any ideas? Maybe there's a neighborhood around here? Looks like a good part of the country to have some strip of rich houses."
Nava had the window rolled down on her side and her left arm hung out of the truck as she drove while her other hand held the wheel loosely from the top. Glancing towards Otis, she offered a small shrug. Her assault rifle rested between the two on the center console of the truck which Nava spied for a moment. She knew it would still be there, but she needed the reassurance.
"I know Maryland pretty well," she said with a meager shrug. When she said Maryland, she said it as if the word was really two. 'Mary land'. "This is all... new to me." That was an understatement. She moved around since this had happened. Damn near every place she went to became a 'new spot' for her since she had never been there.
After a moment of silence as the truck continued on, Nava took a brief glance to the mountains they were driving near. "It's beautiful. The mountains. Don't you think? Aside from the occasional corpse, it's almost like it's a normal day, hm?"
She looked back to Otis with a small smile. The idea of finding a 'rich' house didn't hurt. Hell, if they could find one in decent shape that didn't have a lot of neighbors, she hoped to find a bed at some point. "What did you have in mind? Looking to do some shopping? Maybe see if we could find uh, food? Place to stay for the night that is not the truck?" She shifted in her seat. Her back and her rear hurt. Maybe stopping at any neighborhood, so long as it wasn't infested, might be a good idea. Getting out and stretching the legs might not be a bad idea.
That did it for him. He struct her interest with the idea of a neighborhood. So damn it, it was a must. Some sort of safe haven. Just for the night. He had sort of developed an idea about traveling. As long as you're moving, you're not vulnerable to the dead. But rest was also important. Plus he wasn't even the one driving. The only reason why he hasn't offered, is because he didn't know what the truck meant to her. If it was a sentimental vehicle or some stray she found on the side of a highway. But maybe he did need to offer somewhere down the line.
Looking off into the distance. He couldn't see much. But what he noticed was that they were riding down a hill. And in the distance, they could get a better look. There's a dirt road, a little ways down the road. Dirt roads lead places. He knew it. "Take a right on that dirt path. I'm certain it'll take us somewhere good." Bad chances are the ones they don't take. They had no destination set in stone. They just drove. Seeing what they could find along the way. Which hasn't been much, but that doesn't mean anything. The world was full of treasures. They just haven't ran into them yet.
He got a tick in his knee for a second as he looked down at his feet. Looking down at his worn out shoes. His toes were sticking through the soles. "Ha, maybe they'll have a pair of size 20 sneakers in that neighborhood." He smiled at her and proceeded to look out the window. "Yeah, it's a normal day. Glad i'm not the only one that can see that." The positivity was a great feeling he had. And he was glad he could share it with a friend.
Nava looked to him with her brow arched when he told her to turn. She did so and the truck moved down the dirt path. Otis was 'certain' it would take them somewhere 'good'. In all honesty, he would either be right or he would be wrong. It was as simple as that. She preferred having a little more guidance than that but for now it was better than nothing.
"If you'd like you could take one pair of my boots, but I don't think the size '7' women's would fit well. Besides, mine are a little tight around the feet..." She kept her eyes on the road but a smile crept across her features. After clearing her throat, she looked over to him and then down to the floorboard where his massive feet rested. "You do need something for your feet though, Otis. We can't have you barefoot. What if we need to trek on foot at some point? I don't think it'll be a good idea to have you cut your feet up." She had become a bit more serious. That was the truth of the matter.
"At the very least, some sandals or... makeshift shoes." She frowned as she began to ease off the accelerator. "I need to stop for a minute. I really need to stretch." Nava gently applied the break before putting the truck in park. "Besides, my legs do hurt a little." That was also the truth. Part of her wanted to remove the prosthetics for a little while but it was hard for her to decide when a good time would ever be. She needed to be able to move at a moments notice and without the lower part of her shins or feet, how could she get away from the dead?
Looking to Otis, she huffed once. "Sorry, I just really need to stretch for a few, is that alright?" She wanted to ask because it was the prudent thing to do she felt, but the fact still remained she needed to do this anyway.
He smiled to show his gratitude towards her concern for his lack of good shoes. She then mentioned needing to stop and stretch her legs. His legs were cramped in a small space, he totally agreed. Besides, they had all the time in the world to travel. "Yeah that's a good idea Nava." He smiled as they came to a stop in the side of the road. Not like they'd be causing any traffic, but force of habit.
As he got out of the car, he glanced around the area, to assure their safety. It was quiet, no walkers in sight. Nothing seemed to be a sore to the eye even. Just like a normal day. Another reason to make Otis happy to be alive. He realizes that he's privileged to be in the state that he's in. His mind was rested for the couple years he stayed in that peaceful cabin, while others could be on the other side of the spectrum. Thirsty for blood. Having to watch their loved ones die. He was lucky enough to avoid those confrontations. He was in his own safe haven. And even after that ship sunk, he managed to run into the friendly character that is Nava Masalak.
He walked against the wind, enjoying the cool air brush through his hair and across his face. Walking around the truck to confront her. "Hey, I just wanted to let you know, I really appreciate what you've done for me. You've taken me in and off the street. You didn't have to, but you chose to. You didn't know who I was, or what my intentions were. I could be dead right now. So in a way, you saved my life. I owe you."
Nava opened the door to the truck and let her legs hang out the side a moment. She pulled up her jeans and began to remove her boot off her right 'foot'. Once the boot was taken off, Nava began to unfasten the straps and removed her right 'leg'. Setting the prosthetic in her lap, she leaned down and began to rub the end of her right leg. She had a wrap around the end of her limb to prevent any sort of chaffing.
That was when Otis came around and spoke. She smiled and offered a small shrug. "Well, I could have. I could have left you. You could have tried to take my things. It was a risk on both parts. But here we are."
Nava did the same for her left leg, removing her boot first. She inspected the somewhat 'life-like' prosthesis to make sure there was no visible cracks or damage to it. Following suit as she did for the right leg, she rubbed the end of her left limb through the wrap she wore.
"Would you mind driving for a little bit? I'd like to just leave these off for a while before we... get to where we are going." If he agreed and she moved to the passenger seat, this was the most vulnerable she has been since she has taken him on with her. But her legs were hurting and she would like to give them time to breathe. "Is that alright with you? I could use the break, Otis."
Shauna Kelly: That helped, thank you
