The streets were bare as Lane walked down the road. The sun was quietly setting over the trees casting the last bit of orange glow through the branches. The shadows on the streets danced with life as the gentle breeze blew through the leafs. It was almost a beautiful scenic moment had it not been for rotten corpses littering the street further up ahead. Lane inhaled deeply. Just as he thought pewtrid decay filled his lungs. Lane saw a few abandoned cars up ahead. It looked like they had crashed into each other. Car parts littered the road. As Lane approached he saw the aftermath of the accident. Behind the wheel of the white car seemed to be a young girl. Judging by her size Lane figured she was a teen driver. The airbag was deployed, her neck was twisted something awful. It actually looked like the force of the airbag had broken her tiny neck. Her spinal column was broken so she never turned. Lane unlocked the doors and searched the car amazed that this accident seemed to have gone undiscovered for all this time. Searching the car Lane found a flashlight, a small bag of pot and a lighter, a pack of cigarettes and a few beach towels which head didn't grab. Everything else went into his backpack. Lane didn't like seening the young dead girl. She looked a lot like his younger sister Julie. She was about 18 the last time he was locked up in prison. He had gotten released from prison the same day the outbreak hit. He never saw his sister again. Seeing her look alike now was like getting kicked in the throat. Lane took what he could and closed the door. The other car had a mother and son inside, but of them walkers. Lane thought the kid was only about 9 years old and this was his fate. To be forgotten on the side of the road locked in a car to slowly decay and wither away. The cold bloods clawed at the glass as Lane approached. He opened the drivers door first driving his knife down into the mother's skull. Next the kid. Lane forced the knife through the kids forehead, happy in the knowledge that their suffering was over. Lane pulled the bodies out and checked the car. He couldn't look at them anymore it was to heartbreaking. The car was a black pontiac Gran Prix. It wasn't in to bad of shape. Lane found the key in the floor. He had no idea how it got there, but he didn't dwell on it. Maybe it got dislodged in the crash. He put the key in the ignition and turned it. The car didn't start until the third try. Lane let out a cry of startled relief and joy. His feet were killing him. It'd be nice to have a car. He looked at the gas tank. Half full it read. He wondered how far he'd get til he was on foot again. Lane looked up and saw a exit sign for Busch gardens theme park four miles ahead. That place had to be deserted. Its a theme park. No one's thinking about riding roller coasters these days. No one is doing much of anything fun these day to be honest. Lane drove quietly thinking about the family that owned this car before him. Pushing the thought from his mind he concentrated on the road. There wasn't much to concentrate on except a few corpses in the road. Lane checked the glove box hoping to find something useful, trying to distract himself from the walker child he put down. He hated killing walkers when they're children, it broke his heart. The first thing his hand retrieved was a photo of the mother and son before they turned. They looked happy. Lane's eyes teared up and he rolled down the window and tossed the picture out.
The sun had already set when he pulled up to the theme park. It was gigantic. Lane pulled into the parking lot and was the only car there. It was completely deserted. A snapshot in time, a frozen time capsule of life before the outbreak. Had no one really set foot in this place for three years? Aside from the cobwebs this place looked as if it could be open and running. There was gift shops full of merchandise, consession stands full of food. Rotten food that expired years ago, but it went to proove this place wasn't looted when the world fell apart. It was truly bizarre being here it was like stepping into the past. Lane explored in amazment. He saw security breeches here and there but those could be fixed. Lane decided he was going to hang his hat here. He grabbed some "you must be this tall to ride signs." and blocked the main entrance, which was a few archways you had to walk under. He barricaded the signs with. Benches, trash cans and beer vendor carts.
"That should do til morning."
Lane, satisfied that would keep out the dead at least for the night, looked for a place to crash for the night. He ended up claiming the giftshop as his abode for the evening. Lane dragged a bench in there andbarricaded the giftshop doors then fell asleep quickly; weary from his travels.
