Truly and utterly exhausted Devlen gazed off into the darkness not really seeing, more just pointing his face in a random direction. Sergeant Temin, had them all on rotating street scouting for the last five hours, two men went ahead to view the street to make sure that it was crawling with these infected people before the rest of us made our way up and across. It was slow going, but it was necessary.
Earlier when it was still day light out it was difficult enough to make their way through the city, but now every unseen noise was potential death and now on top of that they were down to next to no ammo. As they waited Devlen blinked rapidly realising he was drifting, when on deployment he had really been this tired. Three days on less than a few hour sleep the soldiers needed to find a spot to hold out for a few hours, the two civilians were in worse shape. One was a young intern doctor, he had hardly said two words since the killing started and the other was a middle aged woman who was helping out at the hospital, they were currently falling asleep and they had only be sitting for a few minutes.
Nudging the interns leg whit his foot, Devlen had too keep them awake if they all wanted to make it out of the city alive. With a sharp inhale Kevin the interns head shot up, gripping the 2 by 4 he found tightly, he blink a few times and shook his head to try and combat the clutches of sleep. Leaning in to whisper to the two, Devlen said as quiet as he could, “Be ready to move.”
Nodding Dayna shifted into a crouching position as they waited for one of the scouts to return. She had stumbled upon them as they were covering the retreat of the last new people fled the hospital, and was lucky enough not to be accidently shot by the near panicked soldiers. It was chaos back in the first hours of the outbreak; there were no clear combatants as nearly everyone could have been infected, Devlen could only hope he didn’t gun down too many live people.
“Movement ahead.” Sergeant Temin voice crept out of the darkness before them.
Shifting his rifle in his hands Devlen prepared for the worse, expecting a whole horde of the infected to come shuffling out of the dark. Instead he heard the quiet call from Private James “Sergeant? Corporal? Where are you?”
“Hush you bloody fool.” The Sergeant’s hissed out.
As sneakily as he could James made his way to them and crouched down as close to them all as he could, “Rena and me only seen a few on the next street, bunch were moving into a building farther up street.”
Private James was a newer recruit, never seen combat but recently completed his training when the outbreak started spreading across the nation. He was a decent solider and quick on his feet if not a little clueless, but he carried his own weight.
“Right then, assholes and elbows boys.” Sergeant Temin said as he stood up straight and began moving forwards not waiting for the other.
Standing up quickly Devlen held out a hand to Dayna to help her too her feet then waited for the other to move forwards and he himself took up rear guard. They scuttled through the dark following Private James to where they had scouted the area. A few minutes later they made their way through the alley ways and backstreets to the spot were Rena was supposed to be, James made a few quiet calls to her but there was no answer. At a nod from Sergeant Temin, James led them to their hiding spot she was to be in. She was gone, and the only clear signs of her being there was a small pool of still warm blood.
“Oh god. Where is she Sarge?” James whispered brinking on panic.
“The fuck should I know.” He responded harshly.
“We got to find her.” James went on, getting a little louder now.
“Keep your bloody voice do-“ the sergeant started but was cut off from a sudden groan in the darkness.
Leveling their weapons simultaneously, they waited breath held for something to happen. All they could hear at first were random gun shot, car alarms and the occasional scream in the distance, then closer the could hear the gurgling and the telltale drag, thump, of the approaching dead.
“We’ve got to go.” Temin said quietly taking a step back.
“What about Rena-“ James started but was cut off by the sergeant.
“No time! Shes either dead or running and we’ve got to do the same.”
Sergeant Temin began to turn and hurry away, cursing silently Devlen turned to do the same, just barley catching the sight of a ravaged face in the moon light rearing back to bit James in the calf. “James!” Devlen shouted in surprise and fear, swinging his rifle around to bear.
Time seemed to slow face James’s face twisted first if sheer terror then into pure pain as the undead bit deeply into the muscle of James’s lower leg. Twisting himself around James pointed his gun down at the infected man and opened fire. The shots were ear splitting in the relatively quiet part of the night they were in, and in a matter of seconds bloody and savaged people began lumbering into the slight light cast off from the moon.
Quick stepping forward to James, Devlen grab hold of his arm and pulled him “Come on we have to go!”
The dead were pouring in from all sides now, for such slow moving things they could appear out of nowhere at the worst times. Taking a few steps James collapsed, his leg just couldn’t support his weight now, Devlen tried to pull him back up, but James grabbed his are to pull Devlen’s attention off the infected for a moment. “I can’t run, I can’t get out of here.” James called out in an adrenaline fueled cry.
“Get up!” Devlen yelled as he pulled James to his feet again.
Few steps later James went down again with a yelp of pain, Devlen could not see the wound in the dark but evidently it was serious. A meaty crack sounded to Devlen right, twisting to see, Kevin was suddenly beside his looking pale and scared out of his mind, makeshift weapon dripping with blood and an infected lying on the ground, head split open.
James gripped Devlens arm tightly, looking to the injured man James was sweating profusely and his skin was a gray colour from shock and loss of blood, and his eyes were swimming in pain as he looked up, “Go.” Was all he said.
Glancing around Devlen made a quick count of more then a dozen infected making their way to the three men, Sergeant Temin was nowhere to be seen and a pile of infected all eating something Devlen hoped wasn’t Dayna, but she was not in sight either. With a grim face Devlen made up his mind; throwing James’s arm over his shoulder he maneuvered James onto his shoulder in a fireman’s carry, “Kevin! Let’s go!”
They made their way out of the city that night, not stopping until Devlen collapsed somewhere sparsely populated in a wooded area by a large river. Kevin dragged the two other men into an old half buckled shed, were Devlen slept in exhaustion and unknowingly James slipped into a fever sleep and the beginnings of the transformation. Devlen came too, to the sounds of gurgling and a soft munching. Glancing around in a panic Devlen saw James straddling Kevin and contently eating his throat and face.
Crawling his way out, Devlen was out of steam both physically and mentally, leaving behind the gore and his equipment, he cleared the ramshackle building and began a shuffle jog away from the city and into the river. He didn’t know how far the current carried him but but the time he made his way out of the water he was surrounded by forest and it was straggly peaceful here, in the far distance he could hear the raging war but here it didn’t seem to matter, muffled by the green and brown of the forest, Devlen limped his way into the woods without looking back.
