Describe your character's life before the Apocalypse: Born in a fundementalist Presbyterian family in eastern Maine, he grew up with a strict upbringing, going with his parents to church practically every week and participating in church activities at every opportunity. At the age of 15, he gave his first sermon at his father's church, a sermon which was either - depending on the perspective of the listener - one of the most striking sermons the church had ever heard...or a sermon which was maybe one or two steps short of being outright racist and homophobic. Unfortunately, when he heard what people were saying about it, he took the latter and ran with it, masking his views with a veneer of outward Christian charity, but word soon got to leaders of several far-right groups out west, including a Colorado pastor named Pete Peters who took him under his wing after Dewey began his own ministerial career. Indeed, by the time of Outbreak Day, his name was not only on the radars of Homeland Security and the FBI but also on various watch lists, including those of the Anti-Defamation League and the Southern Poverty Law Center....
What happened to your character on Outbreak Day?: As was his habit most days, he began Outbreak Day working on sermons for the coming Sunday's services when he heard noises outside his expansive Maine cabin; walking outside, he first thought it was some of the neighborhood 'toughies' - kids from around the area rough-housing outside - when he got a call from his wife Sarah, who was trying to get out of the area and back to their cabin when all of a sudden, he heard what sounded like a car crash in the background....it wasn't on the phone, however; it was right down the road from them; to his horror, someone had crashed into his wife's car (and had subsequently driven off). Running down to their car, he found that while his wife was okay, their daughter...wasn't. Scrambling to get away from the car, they saw that their daughter, who'd been killed, it seemed, in the crash (she wasn't wearing her seat belt and was thrown from the car), somehow came back to life and tried to attack them. Telling his wife to run back to their cabin, he had to put down his own daughter, shooting her in the head with his .357, an act which has agonized him ever since.
Describe your character's life after the Apocalypse: In the weeks and months to follow, as civilization collapsed all around them, Pastor Dewey and his congregation quickly seized control of the town's weapons and supplies, adding them to the temple's already voluminous supply. By the first anniversary of Outbreak Day, they began setting up their own theocratic world, sealing off a several-block area of Belfast, Maine, turning it into a post-apocalyptic Puritanical society, complete with segregated roles for men and women. In Belfast, the men run everything...and the women? Nothing; they have no say and Pastor Dewey's flock will do anything they have to in order to keep it that way...even if it means 'disappearing' anyone who comes through their theocratic world....
