Dean stepped out on the ship's deck and walked for awhile. He stuffed his hands in his pockets and just walked. For the most part everyone had been really nice to him, glad to see new faces even. He sheepishly avaoided conversations. He just wanted to explore around a bit. He walked over to the railing and leaned over, just staring out over the water. Dean began to miss the nights sleeping alone in his tree. At least then he wasn't unsure of himself. He wasn't out of place. He still had purpose then. To find people. Now that he found them he didn't knowhow to just be. These people seemed like good people. They were the kind that took in strangers and fed them, gave them a safe place to call home. But Dean wanted to feel purpose again. He decided he was going to ask that jace guy if he could do supply runs or be the ship's cook. Something, anything really to feel like there was meaning. Before this group he had a mission to find out if he really was the last man on earth. Now that mission was over and he was just some guy now. Life went from one extreme to another and the adjustment so far was like a kick in the nuts. It'd be some time before he truly settled down and felt comfortable, but he didn't want the mundane, his life still had to have purpose.
"Everything's going." to be ok."
He said to himself, thinking he was alone. He didn't realize that Kristin was behind him. Wanting to get a feel for the new guy she had came up to him. Before she could speak however he quickly leaned over the rail and started to barf up what little he had to eat yesterday.
On her walk down the side decks of the ship she thought about how life had been the past few years. All the people she had seen die bloody and the people she cared about it die. She could see there faces in her mind and hear the screams which made tears well up. Being strong for the little girl she hadn’t had much time to feel weak and cry about all the messed up shit in life. That was the hardest part and she really didn’t talk to anyone. The man dom had been trying to chat her up but she hadn’t shown interest. Her and lucas were as close as a divorced couple.
Only sharing custody of a small child which the quietly exchanged every so often. Since the group they had been in died they just seemed even more distant that before. Just a giant space between them with lily in-between them. Glancing back she saw lily playing pirate with luke which made her smile but she turned and kept walking. Wiping tears from her eyes she came across a new face who was hurling his food into the river.
“You okay there sailor.” She said with a superficial smile but to look at her eyes you could see she had been crying. Stopping beside him she leaned over the rail and looked out over the water. “So words says they call you garbage man. Do tell how you got that name?” She said looking over at him then back to the water. It was a nice night and safety felt nice being here instead of running through the woods in the dark. Not knowing if you would see morning. Her mind started replaying the deaths of the people she loved and cared for again.
Dean leaned up and wiped his mouth with his forarm and started to turn red. He hadn't expected anyone to be there behind him. He turned and was greeted by a beautiful woman. Extraordinarily so in fact. Dean's shade of red got just a little darker. He saw that her eyes were puffy like she had been crying. He frowned a little . He didn't like seeing women crying it put him on his back foot he was always awkward in these situations. Dean laughed as he finished wiping his chin.
"Ya know, i think i just realized that i'm prone to seasickness."
Dean couldn't help it. He had to laugh himself in that moment. Here he was in the presense of a beautiful woman and she knows him as "The garbage man who likes to find nice quiet places to vomit. She looked at him as he laughed with bewilderment, but at least the absurdity made her momentarily forget why she was crying . Dean stopped laughing finally and looked at her with a sincere smile.
" i'm Dean by the way. Or i guess, as i'm more commonly known ..... The garbage man."
Dean sat down across from where she was standing. The salty wind whipped his hair around as he spoke. Dean looked back out over the water for a moment then back to her. He wasn't laughing anymore he was serious.
" You know before the Outbreak i was an actor in Hollywood, i did mostly low budget horror flicks and such. At the time i thought, ' hey this is great i'm living my dream. But you know what i dream about now?" Dean paused to allow her a chance to answer. She said nothing only looked at him intently as he spoke. " Nothing, nothing at all. I look out over that water and think, what are we to aspire to be now days?" What are we to dream about? Surviving one more day?
Dean stood up and lit a cigarette as he leaned over the rail again, looking out over the water once more. Not wanting her to see that now he was the one with tears welling up. He held his voice steady as he said.
"Life's not what it was before, but we have to aspire to be something other than lucky."
Dean felt bad he had just unloaded on this poor woman who clearly had her own worries, but she was the first person he had truly opened up and talked to in a very long time. He did feel some better, he turned to face her. She was about to speak. He dropped his cigarette overboard and looked her in her eyes.

When the man leaned up and wiped his mouth she watched him carefully. He mentioned it had just occurred to him he was prone to sea sickness. “Well its good you’re not a pirate then. At least this ship will never move.” She said her voice dripping with sarcasm. The next moment the man started laughing like a lunatic. Her right eyebrow arched as she watched this man. She made a mental note to keep lily away from the crazy guy. She even considered just walking away while he was laughing to give him his moment.
When he finally stopped laugh he did an introduction including his alias. She didn’t like the name dean. It was the name of her ex before the outbreak. Bastard cheated on her with a nurse at her practice. “I think I will stick with Garbage man.” She said watching his movement as he sat on a bench across from where she stood. She listened to him speak about his life before. He was an actor and living the dream. But now surviving another day was the only dream. What would they aspire to be now? Her eyes stayed on him as he lit a cigarette and moved towards the rail.
“I was a doctor before this. A pediatrician. You know what I aspire to? That little blonde haired girl with me. She’s 4yrs old and lost both her parents. I aspire to make sure she has a safe place to grow up. That’s my dream and my goal. Nothing else matters.” She said looking at the man as he turned to face her. "That little girl and the infant down below they are the future. They are the reason we wake up and make sure we survive.” Her voice was calm and her facial expression soft.
Dean took a moment to think about what she said. He hadn't had a chance to meet many people on the ship, he was kind of avoiding them to be honest. Dean was aware there were kids aboard, though he didn't know how old or how many. He was trying to work up his nerve to start making introductions. But he was here with this woman and he didn't feel nervous. He felt like a jackass. He was moping about how life was before, he hadn't considered how life was for those kid. He was lucky enough to remember a life before. This was the only life they would ever know. Dean thought about life before. People would actually pay money to go see a horror movie. They would pay for a ticket to experience fear. Man what a strange fucking concept that was to think about now. Now days that experience is free and plentiful.
"That's a good thing to aspire to. "
Dean smiled and added.
"" You can call me garbage man."
Dean stood up and looked at her . She showed the same toughness as anyone else who's lived this long, but that wasn't why she was still alive, she was still alive because she had something to live for, something to fight for. Dean hadn't had much hope in his mission to find people, before people found him. He searched for them sure, but after a year ticked by he wasn't optimistic. Still it gave him something to do. It gave him purpose. He didn't know this woman at all really, but she seemed to care enough to see if he was ok even though she she had her own concerns. That what families did. His mind momentarily wandered back to the family photo he was looking at on the ride over. He smiled. Maybe he could find purpose in this group.
Dean looked behind her further down the deck was the little girl she was talking about she was playing with what some guy (Lucas) He wasn't sure of the whole story between her, him and the kid, but the girl was important to her. This place, these people were important to Dean. And he would defend them at all cost. That's what gave his life purpose ..... Family

She nodded when dean said her aspirations were good. She smiled when he agreed she could call him garbage man which either way that was going to be what she called him. “The group I was in before. I befriended that little girls mother and father. Lucas was a part of the group as well. Well the group was over taken by walkers and her mom was bitten. She asked me to take her daughter and keep her safe. So that’s what I did with Lucas we grabbed the girl and ran. She’s already had a rough life and lost her parents. I got to make sure she has a chance to grow up and be happy.” Kristen said looking at the man then back out over the water.
After a few moments of silence she cleared her throat and turned to head towards Lucas. Stoppiung for a moment she looked back to Dean. “I got to put lily tobed. It’s late and it will probably be the first full night’s sleep we have had in weeks. Don’t be a stranger Garbage man. You got a friend with me.” She said in a tired but friendly tone. She then turned and headed to Lucas and lily. “Hey Sweetie your having fun playing with lucas?” She said with a smile and the enthusiasm she could muster. “Yesss I have. We played pirates and I killed Lucas.” She said in a cheerful voice.
“Okay well its time for little pirates to go to bed.” Kristen said looking down at the girl. “Can lucas come to say goodnight to? Please!!” Lily stated in a pleading voice. Kristen looked over at Lucas with a smile. “Yeah he can come let’s go to bed.” Kristen said and lily grabbed Lucas’s hand and they all went below deck to the sleeping quarters given to the women. Kristen got Lily in a bunk and tucked her in. Then sat on a bunk across from her with Lucas and started to tell her a bedtime story. It was hard to tell who was more exhausted at this point but lily fell asleep listening to the story and Kristen nodded off as well telling the story. Her head unknowingly resting on Lucas’s shoulder and in her sleep her arms wrapped around his right arm.
