It was all like a horrible dream the moment that she had never expected to face and never really wanted to face either. Her mind was flashing through memories of her and Storm All the good times from childhood until now. She cried and didn’t speak anymore to Branden. Glancing around the room briefly she noticed empty bottles of pills on the bed and it became apparent what had happened. She felt bad now for blaming Branden but she couldn’t speak now.
Everything was just to much for her to bear. She hadn’t cried since she was a child and their mother had died. Stormyr was the only family she had that she was truly attached to. Her attention shifted when She heard rics voice speaking to her. Saying he knew how she felt but it didn’t make anything any better. When his arms wrapped around her she ddint feel comfort she felt like she was trapped. “Get the hell off of me!!!” She screamed and pushed him off of her.
She scooted back and away and pulled her knees to her chest. “Every get out!!!” She said loudly just wanting them to leave so she could. She rested her forhead on her knees and cried. She heard Jace’s voice in the mix and she looked up to him leading branden away. When people left the room she stood and grabbed a sheet off the bed. She Rested storms hands on her stomach and covered her with the sheet. She then took the door and leaned it against the frame blocking passing views. Finding a seat by her sisters body she let the tears pour again.
Jace had left Nicole to talk to jess and he made it to the fire that was burning alone. It wasn’t until he heard the house inside being destroyed that he went inside. There he found sky standing in front of Ric on the ground. His eyes met with Skylar’s in which she just nodded to tell him it was okay. The next thing they heard was Paige screaming upstairs. Ric Skylar and Jace ran up the stairs to come into the room to a horrible scene.
His eyes scanned the room and found Storm dead on the ground. Branden was distraught kneeling beside her covered in blood. Paige was on the opposite side holding the hand of her deceased sister crying. Jace watched ric enter the room to comfort and console Paige. Sky stood in the doorway in obvious shock of what was going on. Jace entered the room and stood by branden. His hand rested on the mans shoulder not even asking what happened.
The next thing he saw was Paige push ric off of her. She then started screaming for everyone to get out. “I know your in pain brother but come with me. Let her be alone for now.” He said to Branden quietly with a frown on his face. Looking around the room he found a folded piece of paper with Branden’s name on it. He picked it up and helped Branden off the ground. He followed him out of the room leaving Paige to have her moment alone.
When ric took her hands and She helped him to his feet. He asked her is she was sure about him coming upstairs with her. She truly didn’t know because at that moment Charles flashed into her mind but the sight of him disappeared as she looked into Ric’s eyes. “Yes I’m sure.” She said with a small smile which faded when they heard screaming upstairs. Jace had come inside and he followed them up the stairs. The sight before her left her speechless. Storm was dead on the ground Branden and Paige kneeling on opposite sides.
Jace and ric both entered the room to console the two grieving people. The next thing she heard was Paige freaking out and telling everyone to leave. This was perhaps the first time that skylar felt bad for her. She watched her push ric away and she entered the room. Jace was walking out with branden who was reluctant to leave. Paige needed time to grieve over her sister though. It was the only family she had left. Sky stopped infront of paige and looked at her with a sad expression. “I’m so sorry for your loss.” She said quietly then turned and moved back to ric.
“She needs time alone Ric. You can check on her later.” She said to him and helped him stand. With that they left the room and sky moved to the room next door. Walking over to the basket walker was crying in she knelt beside it. “Shhh baby its okay. Calm down all the scary noises are over.” She said in a calming voice trying to remove the sight she just saw out of her brain for the moment.

Castle had no sooner asked Brian what he thought about the group than the crazy hit the fan. There was yelling, crashing and breaking of things, more shouting, and what Castle could only assume was something along the lines of relationship squabbles. These people were really airing out their dirty laundry. It was a miracle they were even alive this long to begin with. And then he heard it, clear as day.
'You killed her!' the voice screamed out. "Wow... Really putting their best foot forward here." He said as his brows rose. This was what they wanted them to stay and help defend? He shook his head as everyone had gone inside. He was going to remain outside. Outside where is was safe and crazy free.
Nicole watched Jace go inside after he handed her the water for Jess, which she gave to the woman. She listened to Jess, and when she mentioned the pregnancy, Nicole just nodded. This made things infinitely more complicated. So much so she could only really process this with one word.
Fuck.
Yet, that somehow didn't seem to scratch the surface. Nicole rested her hand on Jess' shoulder once more and smiled as reassuringly as she could. "You are gonna be fine. We are gonna work this out, okay? Remember what I said? I got your back. You just gotta hang with it. Don't quit, especially now."
That was when the house erupted into a frenzy. The choice word seemed to pop up again.
Fuck...
"Wait in the truck," she said quickly. If anything were to seriously happen right now, at least the truck was armored. She helped Jess up and made sure she was secured inside when she looked to Brian and Alexander. Alexander quipped something, but she didn't quite catch all of it.
Her hands went for her M4, gripping with weapon firmly. She quickly approached the two, glancing over her shoulder to the house a moment as the shouting continued. When she looked back to the pair, her jaw was clenched. There was a lot of things that were happening right now beyond her control. The things she did have control of was what she was about to do and say and this was important.
"Look, bad first impression. It was mine too. I thought about bailing. Fuck, I still toy with the idea. I've been with these people about three days now and things are getting a lot harder. I don't know what some of them have gone through but what I can tell you is some of them can't hack it here. They won't make it. But I know survivors when I see them. And I'm looking at some right now." She needed to compose herself before she really let herself go. Going half-cocked now was the last thing anyone needed. But she had things she needed to address still.
"Any particular reason guys dressed like you with the equipment you have were flitting about a military post? Other then the 'I was just passing through' bit? I know the difference between trained and untrained. Let me know when I'm wrong here," she said softly as her eyes went from Brian to Alexander.
"I've done my time. After my tour, I was stationed at that shithole. Polk. I ditched right before shit hit the fan. I left people I called my brothers, my sisters... people that I was supposed to lead. Now they're gone. And... the regret is something that still follows me around. If I leave these people, they're dead. Without you, these people are dead. The babies are dead."
She took a deep breath as her right index finger tapped just above the trigger well of her M4. Nicole knew she couldn't force anyone to stay. Especially if she was thinking of jumping ship herself. But it was a pivotal time for her. She needed to know who she would be able to depend on with one-hundred percent certainty and whether or not that applied with these two.
"Please. Help me save some of these people." That same word bounced around her mind and she wanted to scream it to the world but for now, doing so in her own head would have to suffice.

Nicole had come to them. Told them her back story, about how she knew a soldier when she saw one, because she was one herself. Or had been rather. Only thing anyone was anymore was a survivor. And one thing Castle knew was a survivor when he saw one. She had ditched her old unit to save herself. Survivor. She knew this group wasn't going to make it, and had thought about ditching herself.
Now she was trying to beg them to help her? "I'm no hero honey. Don't look to me to stay with this sinking ship." She didn't have much of a leg to stand on here. They were falling apart left and right. It was only a matter of time till they all got themselves killed. From the sound of it, one of them already was dead. Murdered of all things...
"Better idea. You come with us. You can clearly hold your own. And between the four of us, I think we have a much better chance than staying here." She had to know he was right. None of them stood a chance. One girl was car sick from just a drive, skiddish as all hell too. Three of them seemed to be in some kind of dysfunctional relationship. One of them had even bailed on them back at the fort. And now one of them was dead. What was next?
The words Alexander spoke hit her hard. Maybe surviving with them was more likely. It was something she couldn't deny. Trained versus untrained really wasn't a question. To say she wasn't considering the offer was a lie. She was. And that was the part she hated.
What if they left right now? What if..?
Her life after she came back to the States after she was injured was a series of 'what if' situations. This however was a time she couldn't think about the 'what ifs' like she had been. She looked over her shoulder and sighed. She could feel tears forming, not because she was about to cry. Far from it. It was the tension she was feeling and this was her body reacting to that.
She laughed once and looked back to the two men before she looked at her well worn boots. "Yeah. A better chance, for sure. What happens next? Other than stay alive day to day? With what to look forward to? What if simply surviving just isn't good enough anymore? We are dying. Our species is dying. That baby in that house... the one growing inside the woman that picked you up... What about them? Survival of the fittest?"
Nicole cleared her throat and huffed once. "The offer is tempting. Believe me, I've considered it. Living day to day isn't good enough for me anymore. I ran to save my own ass once. I don't think I can live with myself if I ran now. How does one go about making their amends to the dead?"

She spoke of what happened next, of just surviving... Living day to day wasn't enough for her. Survival of the fittest. Stupid girl. Castle took a step closer to her, looking her in the eyes. What came next was spoken low enough for her to hear, maybe Brian if he was listening in, but Castle knew how to speak so ones voice didn't carry. And it wasn't by whispering.
"Look around you princess. Survival of the fittest? That's been going on for the last two years. Humanity isn't a dying breed. It's dead. All of us are dying. Even that new born. And if these people had half a brain they wouldn't have brought him into this world. This ain't like the old world, and their ain't never going to be a new world. No rebuilding, no coming back together. Because we are all infected." His words were cold, void of any sympathy. He himself wasn't a cold man, or a cruel one, but he wasn't on board with what she was saying. And this group had given him nothing by way of faith.
"You don't make amends to the dead. We don't get that luxury..." He paused as he spoke to her, swallowed hard. "You and me, we're not like them." He was trying to say that no one in their line of work could say they didn't have regrets. People they would love to ask for forgiveness. Survival's guilt, it was called. Why they got to keep living when others died. Some people knew the feeling stronger than others, but it was something almost every soldier felt.
"You can't fix stupid." A line that was common in the military. "And these people will get you killed long before they get themselves killed... Mark my words." He had said all he would on the matter. And Nicole's refusal to do anything about it annoyed him. He took a step back from her before turning from her completely. He gave a sharp whistle and Poncho came running to his side. "You wanna throw your life away, that's on you." He said before he walked off with his dog to play some fetch. He needed some time alone to cool off. For some reason, the woman angered him with her devotion to stay aboard this sinking ship.
She had said it herself. They were untrained, and unorganized. He had seen it back at Fort Polk, and saw it here. She saw it too. Worse of all, she had only been with these people three days she said, So why the undying loyalty? Did she want to die that badly?
As he spoke, Nicole did listen but for the second time, he said something that infuriated her. Before she answered him, she knew he wasn't necessarily wrong though. Her eyes were on him now, Alexander. They were focused.
"Lemme break it down for you, 'Barney-style.' You best step careful 'round here. You are in the bayou. Things tend to come out of the dark and nab you. Especially after mistaking someone for 'honey' or a 'princess'. Nothing sweet here anymore given how we are all 'already dead' ya know?"
As he walked away, she looked to Brian and took a few paces back, making her way back to Jess but kept her eyes on them. "You can grab some extra ammo. Can't seem to spare anymore though for your friend. Since ya know, some people wanna throw their life away. They might need all they can get."
She kept back peddling before she got the truck that had Jess. The part that really got to her though was the fact that she believed he was right.
This is one way to make amends to the dead. Considering we are dead anyway, asshat.
The thought made her smile, though not for the reasons she thought it would.
