The ride from Kentucky had been tense as they tried to make their way towards Florida. Just as they were about to hit the road in the morning, another fight broke out. She shut him out after they snapped at each other about their daughter. Agnes had become a point of contention between the both of them and she worried the little girl felt that and knew it. He held her hand on the way, on and off, but the silence was what brewed the hottest between them. She would feel his hot stare on her as she looked out the window silently, saying nothing as Agnes stayed awake the entire morning. It was exhausting in her mind. She didn't want to fight, but she wanted to rip him up.
Agnes kept saying how hungry she was and she knew they would have to stop. They passed the sign hours ago that said 'Welcome to Alabama' but she didn't know exactly where they were. All she kept seeing were sagging and weather worn banners that said "welcome to peanut country" and "peanut festival this week."
Clearly, there were peanuts to be had here and where there were peanuts, there was peanut butter.
"We have to stop. Agnes is hungry and so am I." That was probably the longest sentence she had said to him all day after he snapped at her back at the car dealership. He knew she was holding too much inside and she knew he was prepared to explode in the car if she said anything to him about how she felt.
He slowed the car and she watched him clench his jaw. She saw his cheekbones protruding and he wouldn't even look her way now. Instead, he was probably just looking for a place to stop, clear and get some food. All she wanted to do was think about Costa Rica but they had to be back in this reality. Her mind wandered to the night before as they rolled slowly up to some little country store with peanuts on the sign. Her eyes looked down, then to the side, then to his legs and soon between them.
Looking into the back seat, she could tell Agnes was getting sleepy which would give them time to get this issue resolved...one way or another.
