Describe your character's life before the Apocalypse: Andrew Michner was born into the Southern equivalent of the Kennedy political family; his grandfather, Thomas L. Micnher, served two terms as a Senator, while his father, David Michner, served for nearly 3 decades in the House from the adjacent 2nd Congressional District. After attending West Point in the early 1980's - followed by nearly a decade of military service in the Pacific - Michner returned to the Palmetto State and would himself serve in Congress from 1993 to 2011 from SC's 1st Congressional District...by the time of the Great Pandemic, Michner was serving as an Assistant Secretary of Defense for Personnel & Readiness, part of which included ensuring that the capabilities and needs of U.S. military installations...including West Point, were as good as they could be given the vagaries of Washington at times.
What happened to your character on Outbreak Day?: -The day began for Michner in, of all places, Manhattan's 69th Regiment Armory, where he was set to discuss the growing pandemic with members of the NY State National Guard. As he was walking to the lectern to begin his remarks, his security detail whisked him away, informing him of the deteriorating situation outside. Fighting off several stricken attackers (i.e. just-turned victims), his security team made the decision to sacrifice themselves in order to give Michner time to get to the building's roof, where a waiting helicopter would whisk him out of the city. (Unbeknownst to him, a second helicopter carrying his wife and three daughters from Washington, D.C., would crash enroute to Dover AFB at roughly the same time as he departed Manhattan). Upon learning that his helicopter's original destination, LaGuardia, was closed to all inbound traffic, his flight was diverted north to a site the pilots cryptically referred to as "Site 1-Hudson", roughly forty or so miles north of the Big Apple...a site also known as the United States Military Academy.
Describe your character's life after the Apocalypse: In the three years since arriving, Sec. Michner has become a part of the garrison, working in whatever capacity he can offer and, when there's down time, showing the younger members of the garrison around West Point, pointing out various things and reminding them of not only West Point's place in American history, but of their place in history as well.
