Describe your character's life before the Apocalypse: Growing up in central Tennessee, Laura McArthur (nee' Summerton) always wanted to see the world, but she knew to do so, she decided to apply to West Point, where she was accepted and attended from 1985-1989, graduating 58th out of 897 cadets in the Class of 1989. Serving in various engineering units and assignments, she quickly learned her chosen trade of military & combat engineering, serving overseas in Somalia in 1993 and then later with two tours in Iraq. In between her tours, she served as a military engineering professor at West Point and then served as a district commander for the Army Corps of Engineers in upstate New York before eventually being assigned as the first female Commandant of Cadets at West Point in 2012, a position she served in as the world lurched towards Outbreak Day.
What happened to your character on Outbreak Day?: - Although West Point, being on an isolated plain & promontory along the Hudson River, was fortunate not to suffer the bleak and horrid fate of most U.S. military installations, it too suffered that day when a security breach allowed several infected outsiders to enter the Academy grounds; although they were later isolated and "humanely euthanized" (BG McArthur gave orders to the medical staff to put down all infected before the Outbreak overran the Academy; it also helped that classes were canceled several weeks prior to that day as it meant a skeleton number of personnel on the grounds. Nonetheless, several dozen members of the academy's security contingent (Alpha & Delta Companies, 4th Bn., 1st Inf) perished when outside civilians - some infected, some not - tried to overrun the grounds.
Describe your character's life after the Apocalypse: - In the months after Outbreak Day, B.Gen. McArthur and the remaining survivors - numbering once as low as sixty-seventy but now, 3 years afterward, numbering nearly 230, mostly military but with a scattering of civilians, the base is one of the few functioning outposts of American civilization - albeit one that most days seems to flirt with disaster (to borrow Molly Hatchet's song title). However, McArthur - knowing there are other pockets of civilization beginning to build strength - is faced with a decision: do they remain isolated on their own or do they attempt contact with the other strongholds out there?
