The world was such a cruel place the years after the outbreak. Humanity was almost extinct not from lack of people. From the corruption this new world did to the human mind. Most people had become nothing but ruthless savages. This is why William chose to travel alone and avoid people all together. It was just easier this way and just a lot safer than trusting anyone. To be honest he was never much of a people person before the outbreak anyway. No one in his family was in general.
William left South Carolina months ago. He had been on the road with the only traveling companion her trust. His horse had been the only reliable thing these days. Moving through the woods he took in the spring time scenery enjoying the feeling of the warm sun coming through the tree leaves hitting his face. Hearing the sound of water running he nudged the painted horse in that direction. Moving slowly down a hill the two made it to the edge of the stream sliding of the large brown and white painted mare.
“Looks like a good place to rest. What do ya think girl?” He said petting the horse’s neck softly. She nickered and pushed her head into him almost making him fall into the water. “That’s how you’re feeling today?” He said with a chuckle and reach down splashing the horse with water. He moved away from the water’s edge and pulled the tack off the horse. “Don’t wander far Zephyr.” He said as he watched her wander to a nearby patch of grass.
William set up a fire and started water boiling for the next days trip. Pulling some Jerky he had made from a deer killed a week back he munched on it. Watching the horse graze he leaned up against a tree and listened to the birds chirping and wind in the branches. At least it seemed to be a peaceful enough place to rest for the night. tomorrow he would head into the Town of Baton rouge. Need to be rested enough for that in case a fight with the dead or people came about.
