It had been two long, brutally quiet years out on the road. Stopping only when he absolutely needed to, John made sure that it would only happen if he was low on gas or if Duke had to get out. Most of the time, The Truck Stops were empty, and while it used to go against his moral code, he stole all manner of things, mainly perishables, because they tended to not expire, and treats for his four legged best pal.
It had taken him such a long tiring time to get from Philadelphia to Upstate New York, because of the amount of congestion on NY-State 5 and State Route 15-A. Often times, the young driver had to pull to the shoulder just to get past the disabled vehicles. The boy faced many trials along the way. He didn't have enough room or space to fit more than one more passenger, so any time he had seen lost travelers, he had to keep driving. It ate at him every time, but he couldn't risk it...but he really could use the company, one can only talk to the dog for so long...
John gathered that, from the changes in the highway signs, he was headed in the right direction. The off ramp from Highway 20 indicated that the duo had found the town of "Lima." The trusted Camaro they had been riding in for the past two months was slowly running out of gas, and wreaked of old food, gas and dirty clothes. "What do you think, pal? Should we check it out?" His trusted lab looked at him, tilted his head, and started to pant. John figured that was a 'yes,' and really the both of them needed to stretch their legs.
They drove past a sign that said "SETTLED 1788 WELCOME TO HISTORIC LIMA CROSSROADS OF WESTERN NEW YORK"
"Well, Duke-y, I think we're at a stopping point for now." He said, letting out a sigh of relief. The streets were scaresly populated, but John couldn't see any walker in sight, and as a matter of fact, once he'd driven past the main street, it seemed like the little farming town was quarantined off from the rest of society.
John pulled up and parked his car in front of a corner store and looked around. This place was too quiet, he couldn't see anyone, but this seemed like a good place to hunker down and sleep for the night. He moved his things from the car to the front of the store, and leashed up Duke, scratching behind the black lab's ears. He holstered his 10mm pistol and got on knee level with the dog "Want to go on an adventure, boy?" Duke's tail started wagging, and John took him gently. "Okay, lets go pal." Whether or not he'd find anyone out here, was another story.
