Thad climbed into the back of the car. They took off, the gate opened for them. Something was off about this woman. She seemed to relaxed, to at ease. He would ignore it for now, maybe she just didn't really give a shit. Maybe she thought she was safe, safe up in the mountains.msfter these last few days they learnt, no one was safe. Not even alone up in the mountains.
"Yeah military. Amber is too, as was the other guy you were talking to. There's other too, combat medic, another one born and raised in. In military. It's how we survived so long. We have the dolls that pay the bills or so they would say. We know order and how to get shit done. I'm sure we can talk to your dad, see if that's what's best. It's ultimately up to him if he wants to bring his family here. Honestly with all the chaos going on I wouldn't blame him if he didn't. Seeing this place now, I wouldn't."
He looked out the window from the back seat, gun across his lap. His expression was saddened, cold. He had lost two friends back to back, didn't even know it. All because he left. How was he supposed to live like that? Corey, Bethany. They were close to him, one a brother, one his closest friend these last four months. Now without both, and without Becky by his side, he felt alone.

"He's here for me, yes. After what happened today we can't be to careful. Someone died. Someone close to us, we can't have that happen again. On runs, like this one, three people need to go out there. I count three of us in the car. We just need to be safer. If you hadn't been here we'd be locked down, allowing no one to come or go. But I wanted to give your family a chance. See if they wanted to join us. We need the people," Amber said calmly.
She looked out the window as they drove. "You never answered me. Did you want to come. I know you want to show your father, but what about you personally? You saw the farm briefly, our food situation. Our walls, the towers. You saw how much gas we had, those barrels beside it were filled with gas as well. We're military, have doctors. You saw this. Do you want to join."
She paused, "because if you nor our father don't even want the idea of leaving, then why leave. You say you sustain yourself up there, are safe. We can convince your father, but only if you want us to. We wouldn't want to force you or your family."
Looking back at Thadd. "You mentioned trading?" She turned again to Josie. "The farm and the mountains are to far to fade regularly, but at the very least we can do a one time thing."
"If I hadn't been here, you may have just froze to death Amber." She smiled to the woman as she zipped through the gates and hit the gas.
Thad seemed uptight, but really, she didn't know him. He had his reasons and she wouldn't question what those reasons were. They were none of her business. She had nothing against these people and so far, what she had seen and met, she liked. She thought Garret was nice enough and she helped out Amber when she needed help. Thad seemed like he could hold his own and she was okay with that.
"I mean, your farm is a nice set up. Certainly ripe for the pickings for those raiders, which is why I like our little place in the mountains, but you have to understand this is my family home. That's not something you give up so easily because of the luxuries offered by the farm. We have each other, you know? If dad doesn't want to go, then I won't want to go. Doesn't mean we can't be friendly to each other though."
She knew why they wanted to come to the mountains..they wanted to see how friendly her and her family really was, and that was fine too. She just hoped her dad wouldn't get mad for bringing these people back.

A few hours had passed as they continued to make small talk. Who they were, where they came from, silence as they enjoyed the mountain roads until finally she came to the small culvert and road that led right towards the shaded property that was deep into the mountains. The cars were still parked in the driveway but there wasn't any activity going on. It didn't matter really. They may have just been inside playing a game or prepping some food. When she parked, she motioned for the pair to follow her as she sauntered up the steps to the front porch.
"Dad! I'm back! You in here?"
Nothing. Not a peep, not a squeak, nothing. She got suddenly nervous and froze as she whispered.

"It is. Located in the middle of no where, backside surrounded by trees only one visible direction. One road in not that bad as it seems," Thad said calmly. "Not exactly visible to the road. You'd have to cut through the trees to where we can see you, or come through the one field. Either way, we'll see you coming before they can get to us. It was better than Fort Bragg anyway. The army base was an easy target, stuck out like a sore thumb."
He paused, "we also have crops, food in the forest. We can farm, harvest, prepare for the winter. Rocks, mountains soil, myou can't do that. But I get family, and the home you grew up in. I'm not saying throw it away, but now a days, people, we need each other."
She seemed to do what ever her dad said, at least from what he gathered. Maybe she was a daddy's girl, bent to his way. Her father seemed controlling and that could be dangerous, dangerous for them all.
They arrived a few hours later. It was a shaded property. He kept getting the horror movie vibe going through his skin. She parked and he climbed out, holding his rifle now. It was quiet, to quiet. No movement, no talking inside. Eerily quiet. The sensation scared her. What was going in, was this a trap.
"What's wrong," Thadd asked calmly, "your dad, your sister, are they okay." He looked at the door. "We should go inside."

"I may have, but adrenaline was keeping me going. I would have been fine. I had my skin covered. A sweater, gloves. I had shoes and coverings. I think I would have been okay," Amber said calmly. Something about Josie sent off signals. She came off strong, had stro opinion. It honestly said like she didn't want to stay.
If that was what she wanted maybe they should just hesd back, let her go. It was clear she didn't want to be there, she was best to just leave. They didn't need trouble with going with her. They needed people covering shifts, it was a big risk going with her, one she hoped it would pay off.
When the car stopped she got out. The small talk had gone okay, but the girl still seemed full over herself and snobby. Like they were forcing her to take them.
Amber walked with her gun, followed Josie up the steps. She said some thing was wrong, "is it your family," Amber asked, "are they okay."
She pointed her gun at the door, ready to fire if they had to.
Josie froze. The cars were here and she saw the weapons on the floor. The hunting rifle her father would take on outings was propped up by the door and as she looked in a bit more, she noticed some furniture was moved out of place. A dining room chair was knocked over and there was broken pottery by the kitchen.
She blinked several times and as Thad spoke about going inside, she kept her pistol at her side. She stepped in and noticed a picture frame was on the floor as she stepped on it, hearing the crunch of glass beneath her shoe. Her heart was racing as she looked up the stairs to the dark house where nothing seemed to move.
She heard the sounds of something growling and it sounded like a walker. "Over here.." She whispered as she looked to the kitchen. She started to come through the dining room thinking maybe her father and sister had run off because of walkers in the house and as she propped up the overturned chair, there she saw it. Her sister was dead on the kitchen floor with blood pouring from her head. Her pants were missing and she was spread eagle on the floor. As if that scene wasn't enough she saw the fridge on the floor and pinned underneath was her father. There was a bloodstain on the floor and she could see his throat had been slit. Maybe he struggled, maybe he fought, but either way he was trapped by the refridgerator that fell on top of him.
Her eyes went wide and she froze, shaking as she looked at the scene.
"No...no..no..." She couldn't believe what she was seeing as the horror of her now lost family hit her hard. It was far too traumatic. She fainted right where she stood.

Thad followed her in. He kept his rifle raised, sweeping over the furniture. It was dark, the flashlight attached to his gun lifting up the room, casting shadows on the walls. He continued to sweep, moving forward towards the sound. It was coming from the kitchen. He stepped around the glass and over a knocked over chair.
Coming into the kitchen he saw the carnage. A girl laid on the floor. She was pantsless, legs spread. He saw the blood in coming from her head, leaking out of her head. Her eyes were open in shock, dead expiression filled them, at least she didn't turn. The fridge was tipped over on another guy, pinning an older man to the flood. Blood pooled around him. He had turned, reaching out trying to scratch and grab them.
Thad looked out and watched the Josie about to fall. He dropped the gun and rushed out to grab her. Josie fell in his arms instead of the floor. She was unconscious due to shock. Thad lowers, looking up at Amber. "Let's get out of here. Grab some clothes that would fit her. Grab that gun that was out front. Then we should leave. Ill grab her, take her to the car. See if we can wake her up. Or we can take her back to Brian and Dean, get her help."

Amber followed the pair in. She swept her rifle back, aiming it back towards the car in case this was all a trap. She had their six covered, ready to fire behind. As she walked backwards she crunched glass and stepped over a chair. She had followed Thad's steps, stepping in the number of paces he stepped in.
Once in the kitchen she turned around and faced the horror. What she saw almost made her want to throw up. The girl, spread like that, stabbed in the head. She didn't look like she had any other bruising, her chest was exposed, some one had pulled down her shirt. The sight made her sick, sick at the wrold. This could have been her, her and Bethany. Had the raiders not be radioed away.
Seeing Josie about to fall she looked at Thad. "She's slipping catch her," she yelled. Thad who was closer caught her as Amber rushed forward. She placed her knife in the father's hesd, quickly pulling it out. "Have mercy," she said calmly, tucking it away.
Amber moved along towards Thad. "Alright. That works. See if you can find a shovel. We'll burry her family and move on." Amber quickly left the room. She found a bedroom, it had girls clothes in the closet. Her sister had been smaller than Josie, so the clothes must be hers. A,ber grabbed a bag from the closet and began stuffing clothes into it. Some shirts, tank-tops. She stuffed over shirts, pants, underwear, and socks. Making sure there was enough of the last two for five days. If they brought the girl back they could at least give her clean clothes.
Coming back down she grabbed the hunting rifel. As the went to the car she popped the trunk, tossing the bag and gun in the back.
Thad had placed Josie in the back seat was shaking her gently, trying to get her to wake up. "Leave her," Amber said, "there's a shovel in the back. We can burry the bodies. Let's hurry."
Together the two carried the sister out. Thad dug a hole for each member, as Amber went to retrieve the dad. The fridge had turned post of him to mush. What was left she dragged out and placed with the sister. Throwing each in their respective hole Thad began to cover them with dirt, father on the left, sister on the right.
Amber grabbed two sticks and using her belt tied a cross. She took her knife and carved Here Lays a beloved father
Doing the same with two more and Thad's belt she carved another Here lays a loved sister
She didn't know name it would have to do. Sticking it in the ground she smiled and stepped back. "Let's go home." They both made their way back to the car. Thad drove while Amber rode shotgun, they headed back to the farm, leaving the cabin behind them.
