Inside the dining room on the second floor, Argile had been sitting, looking over a map of the city. The wheel and spokes from the center jutted out around the city and he had already marked in red sharpie where they were and where they could go. He wanted to expand, just a little, open up a road, make a place for the kids to play and keep his people safe. Every night they spoke by candlelight. The women stayed and tried to keep the children occupied while he and his men went and fortified around the Brownstones.
Luxury living proved to be fruitful for them in the aftermath of the world coming to an end. They had comfy beds and lots of clothing to wear, but that was about it. The fancy suits and high heels did them no good. But it was a place to be and no one was complaining. He was enjoying expanding and making it a little safer even though runins with lone bandits or small groups of raiders kept them on their toes.
If that was the one thing he hated, it was other people trying to take what they were working so hard to build. He wanted to go across the Potomac soon and hit some of the bigger neighborhoods to see if they could find any food or supplies. He was hoping he could make contact with the Pentagon. Surely they had answers there but everything was shut down.
Eden moved out from the kitchen and stood for a moment watching him. He was still right where she had left him, staring at the map. He was a good man, a good friend, and her protector. She cleared her throat as she crossed the room and say a plate in front of him," eat, you're starting to worry me, how you just keep staring at that thing." She sat down next to him and looked over it as well," we're still going to make this work, we aren't giving up." She patted his arm. They'd been together since before all the dead started walking. She wouldn't give up on the thing he was holding onto.
Eden glanced at the map and stood, then started making blue marks," this is where we have spotted troops, and other people. It's safe for us to avoid those areas, we keep working on the walls at night and send small groups out, to search, moving out from the brownstone , like a clock. I think it's safer that way."

Argile softened as Eden walked into the room. He always did when he saw her. She was a soft ray of sunshine that shone through dark clouds, always. She was everything to him and he knew he didn't tell her that enough. She looked over him just as much as he wanted to protect her. There was a pear on the plate, which was one of his favorite fruits, even before all this and he happily snatched it up and took a bite. He always let the women and children eat first. That was the gentleman in her.
When she got closer, he wrapped a strong arm around her shoulders and placed a soft kiss on the top of her head.
"I still can't figure out why you chose to stay. I am either going to lead us into the creation of a greater community, or make us crash and burn to the ground."
He watched as she made her marks on the map, paying attention as he ate the pear, giving himself a bit of stamina with the juicy, plump pear. He enjoyed hearing Eden talk, especially now. She was strong and she knew what she wanted. She also knew what he wanted and right now, all seemed good.
"The Pentagon. They have answers Eden, I know it. They have to. There has to be people there. I'm just..." He pulled away from the table and moved towards the fireplace, warming his legs with the soft fire that burned low. He never made a roaring fire..it was far too dangerous. "I'm worried. I've seen strangers, small bands and groups. They travel through and I feel like they are just...watching us. Waiting for something. I have a bad feeling, Eden."
Eden watched him get up and move. He was talking about things that were on his mind, and at first she just listened. after a moment of staring at the map, she rose and walked over to where he sat.
She stood behind him and slipped her arms down over his shoulders and hugged him, "Why, I chose to stay, is quite obvious, you silly, old man." She kissed the back of his head, "For whatever reason, you are stuck with me, and we do work well together, you know that." He was her best friend, he knew that, and by all accounts, her family. She wouldn't leave, they needed each other and they both knew that.
Her hands came up and toyed with his hair, aimlessly running through it, "The pentagon. Should be a small team, under night cover, go in and see what we can find, most likely not people, but papers, anything would help, some explanation to put you a bit at ease." He spoke about seeing people, them watching the group. "And we can watch right back, set tails on them, find out who they are and what they want, maybe we should double up on the guards, just for the time being?" She leaned forward and rested her cheek next to him, "What do you think, the pear was good , right? Grew it on the roof, in those planters, one tree has really taken off."

"Silly old man? Have I gotten that old?" He laughed as she wrapped her arms around him, reaching his hands back for her hips. Gently, he started to sway from left to right as if they were dancing. He felt her fingertips in his hair and this woman could set him off by just scratching into his skull. She knew how to make him purr and act like her little kitten.
He turned in her arms and grabbed gently at her wrists, placing her arms around his shoulders as he placed his hands on her hips. Still moving from left to right as if they were dancing to the unsung tune.
His latin accent was light as he spoke to her. "Tails? We do not have that many people to spare Eden. Maybe a few, follow them where they go. It is more important to keep this place safe. Now that the winter is gone, people are going to be more mobile. So are the dead."
He leaned down and placed a soft kiss upon her forehead while continuing to dance to the silence. The only thing they both heard was the crackle of the fire in the fireplace behind them. "The fruit is good. Not as large as I would hope, but we should be able to grow more soon. There's plots of land close by."
Eden chuckled as he turned the tables on her, and then felt herself swaying with him. He was such a pussy cat. She rested her head on his chest and shoulder, 'Argile, we have to try, maybe, just one or two, we can't be blind to these people. Not everyone is like us." She pulled her head back and looked up at him. "We need to know if they are dangerous."
She was right, he knew she was. She could see it on his face, 'If we wait,it could end badly for us."
He brought up the subject she had wanted to speak to him about anyway, 'Speaking of land, we have it, these small yards, if we tear up some of the sidewalks, it might work. We could try. We need to set details, to dig and trench the yards, to try to get the ground fertile." Eden knew she wouldn't get it immediately, that he would have to think it over, but soon enough. They needed good food to eat, and that meant planting, she had already gotten him on board with what she was doing so far, it would just take a little more coaxing.
"I can join with you, go out and be apart of the groups, that's one." Eden knew how he felt about putting her at risk, but what choice did they have?

Argile hated sitting back and waiting. He wasn't military or police and he wasn't even sure what to do with the leadership role he was put into in the first place. He just did what he had to do and what he knew was planning and building. He stopped swaying with her and just looked down at her pretty blue eyes with a smile. "Or we could just run away, find a boat, find an island and live happily ever after together." She would never let that happen and he would never really do that anyways. He felt responsible for these people he took in.
"Maybe I should go then. See what I can find out. I know you're going to tell me not to go though Eden."
This time he leaned down and kissed her lips softly and sweetly before pulling back with a wink.
"As far as pulling up sidewalks, we need way more equipment then what we have. Jackhammers, haulers, that sort of thing to pull up ground. I was thinking the zoo. We are close to it and there's plenty of space to be had between the animal pens. I was thinking of maybe moving out of the city but I'm worried about the dead getting more active. We don't have the trucks to move everyone." He always tended to worry more and she always had answers and alternatives to their situations. Again, he was surprised she stuck around. She was the smart one of the pair.
Eden chuckled at his talk of running away. He knew she wouldn't do that, but she let him talk anyways. He said he should go and before she could protest, he kissed her lips, probably because he knew what she was going to say.
She kissed him back, and then stared at him, "You're not going without me, we are a team, I have your back and you have mine, remember." She folded her arms and rested them against her body. Conversation over. She had her mind made up and he knew it. He'd seen that look a thousand times. If he was going to go, she was going, enough said.
"The zoo, might actually be a perfect idea. They already have buildings set up , granted they were designed for housing animals, but we can convert them a bit and they open right up into the pens, where we would grow the food." She laughed, "I mean, it's a huge space, more than enough room, we could eventually expand to the full site, but maybe a pen or two, just to start." He'd done it now, her wheels were spinning. She dropped her arms and went back to the table, she pulled out more sheets, more maps, images and books about DC. Visitor guides. She glanced at him, "Here look at this map of the zoo in the guide book, it's location could be great," she was excited, and that meant, 'I need to make some coffee and work this through." She kissed him and disappeared into the kitchen.

What he wanted to do with Eden, at this very moment, was lock the door to this sitting room and take advantage of the fact she wanted to be a 'team' with him. Often times secret soft words were spoken between them in private, but in the group, the showed that united front like the sun shining brightly overhead.
She pulled away from him and he made a little whimper like a puppy to show he didn't like that, but he followed her to the table. She changed with her tone, excited about the possibilities of the zoo.
"My main thought was using some of the ponds and the aquarium for fish farming. We'd have to figure out a natural way of doing it since we don't have the power for oxygenating the tanks, but perhaps we can figure something out. I've ideas for building windmills here. It may be better for the zoo. More space for me to build."
Of course, he was always worried about the biters getting to people but he was far more worried about the living wanting to take what was theirs. He would leave that thought alone allowing her to figure out how to use the pens and land to set up a farming community.
"Maybe, in time, we can just move everyone there. There's walls and a heavy gate that were used to keep the animals in."
Eden came back with a cup of coffee, and some crackers. She smiled at him, listening. "Okay, so we need ideas, you want to find a way to make a power supply." She was standing next to him and looking down at the table. She took a sip from her cup, and then set it down, "You know, this is going to take some serious man power. You don't think we have enough men now, it will mean splitting the group at first, and right now,we can't." She slipped her arm around him, 'We can make this an goal, I will play around with it in spare time, but right now, we really need to check out this other group that is checking us out." She glanced sideways at him.
"We won't solve this all tonight, anyway." Eden leaned slightly over and whispered a little low, 'fyi, I locked the door."

Argile teased her with his Latin accent that she seemed to enjoy. He always saw her eyes dilate when he rolled his Rs. "Well, of the two of us, you're the smart one so I am under the impression that I'm going to listen to you. I'm just the brawn."
He chuckled as he turned around grabbing one of the crackers and enjoying the crunchy, salty taste in his mouth. His hand rested at her hips and he easily picked her up and set her on the edge of the table.
"Then we watch the other group, if that's what they are. I don't know if they are just random lone wolves or actually organized. It will be nice to find out though. See what we're up against."
He spread her legs as he moved in between them, pressing himself against her as his arms wrapped around her shoulders. When she spoke about the door being locked, he cocked a brow, turned back to look at it as if he didn't trust her, then turned back to her.
"You locked the door. Does that mean we are supposed to have crackers and coffee in peace? Because really, I'm ready to brainstorm with you." And by brainstorm, she knew what he meant. His lips moved to her neck, kissing softly as he purred against her. "We should clear our minds."
He said he was going to listen to her. She already knew that and chuckled. He stole a cracker and picked her up, setting her on the table. Eden smiled up at him," yes, I am going to start investigating this group, see what they are all about." She felt him press against her and held her breath.
He looked, double checked her and she frowned," you had to look?" He leaned down and kissed her neck and she lifted her head to make it easier for him. Her hands came up to his back and she chuckled," brainstorm, is that what we call this?" She pulled his head back, gripping his head by the back of his hair, staring into his face," I don't want your mind clear, I want you focused, on everything we do." She kissed him, an intensely fierce, kiss.
Her mind cleared. She no longer beat herself up about this side of their relationship. She stopped dwelling on how nice his wife had been to her and how much he had loved her. They were alive and they needed to keep living.

"I'm sorry, I had to look. Remember, you're the smart one, yes?" His lips came to her neck as his hands moved to her hips when her hands gripped into his hair. She burned a kiss into him by sealing her lips to his and as she did that, he moaned a little into her mouth. He was putty in her hands as as she continued to kiss him. His hands moved to untuck the shirt from her pants, gently tugging at it as he pulled it up further. He finally broke from the kiss, leaving her shirt halfway up her waist as he spoke.
"You investigate the group. I will see to the zoo. But you must make me a promise."
He came down to her neck, kissing softly as he started to pull the shirt up and over her head. When she looked at him perplexed, wanting the question to be asked, he took her face in his hands, tossing the shirt aside as he gaze into her eyes.
"You must promise me to stay alive, yes? I can't do this without you Eden."
He never told her he loved her. At least, not yet. They were both navigating through this relationship, as oddly sensuous as it was. They both still felt the loss of his wife. She was everything to him and Eden knew it. It's how they spoke when it all happened and when they finally came to a spot where they could feel safe and breathe. She knew how deep that hurt ran and she also knew how he couldn't lose someone else he cared very deeply for. Still, the words would not come out.
