Avoid the big towns.
That was one of the rules. Avoid them at all costs unless you couldn't avoid them. It might seem like a duh-ism but, you just couldn't avoid ALL of them. At least what lay in front of them wasn't a huge town or city. Those were a no go. Not unless something so incredibly awful happened and they were literally forced. However, pickings in these sorts of towns were often disappointing.
Darwin took a knee behind a warped metal guardrail on the side of the road leading into the town and cocked his head to one side. "Well, what do you think? Could be something in there we could use. Like... food." He glanced over to his sister, Maxine.
Maxine was his world now. The only family he had left and her opinions on their situation mattered to him. Unable to get back to California was something that couldn't be helped. He hoped their adoptive parents were okay, but he could do the math. He wasn't great at it but in all honesty, the numbers game here was so lopsided it was easy to assume the worst. He tried not to think about it or bring it up much if it could be helped. They both managed to keep positive heads throughout this ordeal. There was no need to sour that mindset now.
He let out a soft chuckle before bringing a hand up to scratch the side of his face. "I mean, no big deal right? If it didn't have anything? Like food..."
With a forced smile he shrugged. They had some food sure, but they always could use more. Not to mention a place to actually sleep in would also be nice. He didn't wanna admit it, but he was kinda cold. Juuuuust slightly.
Looking back towards the intersection before them, several stores lined up on either sides of the street. Some were worse off than others and some even looked to be in good shape. Stay positive man. I'm sure we can find SOMETHING.
