Full Name:
Benedict Squire
Aliases:
Ben
Benny (mockingly, from his father)
Avatar Photo:
Age:
25
Gender:
Male
Appearance:
Benedict stands tall at an even six feet. He is long in his features, with broad shoulders. He has heavy-lidded blue eyes and plump, pouty lips. Be it the shape of his eyes or the glossiness that they can occasionally sport, he generally always looks exhausted. His black hair used to be short and well-kept in a parted, punk style, but now it is overgrown. His beard is full, but contained. He has both a nose piercing and a lip piercing. His ears are gauged, and more often than not, he has plugs in. Scars of all types mar his body, but most are covered up by tattoos. He has a full sleeve on one arm, and a half sleeve on the other with partial pieces on his forearm. He has sporadic tattoos on his legs, and a full back piece. Because of the scars, some images can have a bit of a pucker. The back piece has a noticeable pucker from healing skin, however, from when he was shot in the back. He is usually wearing a pair of jeans and boots with either a black shirt or a shirt with a vest over top. Looking at Benedict head on, he always seems a little pensive, a little far away, and the resulting face left unattended can be misconstrued with a grimace. If he doesn't pay full attention to his features, he can appear very threatening. Though, his rough features can make him appear that way even if he is paying attention.
Occupation (studies and job before the outbreak):
Before the outbreak, Benedict was a tattoo artist.
Hometown (city, state, country):
Benedict was born in Boston, Massachusetts, but moved with his family to Virginia after the death of his mother. He grew up there and continued to live there until forced to move during the outbreak.
Relationships (relatives, friends,...):
Benedict's mother died when he was a child, and his sister died in the early days of the outbreak. The only remaining family member is his father, Clyde, with whom Benedict has a tumultuous, volatile relationship. Benedict lived in Akihiro Yamada's stronghold during the first year of the apocalypse, but was removed from the community with his father because of his father's actions. During his time within the community, however, Benedict developed a close relationship with Aki's daughter, Haruka. While Benedict and Haruka are on good terms, Benedict and Aki are not. If Aki ever found out about Benedict and his connection to his community's downfall, he would be a dead man.
*Clyde will be played as an NPC*

Describe your character's life before the Apocalypse:
Even before the apocalypse, Benedict's life left much to be desired. He was born in Boston, Massachusetts, and lived there until the death of his mother. His father, Clyde, was a small-time boss in petty crime, and he was as crooked as his line of work allowed. Cruel and harsh in his nature, he was viciously abusive towards his wife and his young son. On more than one occasion, Benedict would try to protect his mother and wake up on the floor hours later. With the birth of his younger sister, he thought that things might have gotten better, but he took the brunt of the abuse for her sake. Together, they grew up in a tumultuous household, and things reached a fever pitch on the night when his mother died. In another drunken rage, Clyde attempted to beat Benedict, but his mother intervened and shielded him behind her. She begged for mercy, for compassion for their children, but all she received was the intended beating, with interest added. Benedict tried to help her, but was ultimately incapacitated. He watched on, frozen, as Clyde brutally beat her to death, smashing her head in with a kettle.
He was eight.
With Benedict unable to speak to the police out of fear, Clyde was able to sweep the murder under the rug and attribute it to a robbery gone wrong. To help cool things down, Clyde made contact with a branch of his gang in Virginia and moved the family there. Life proceeded as normal, unfortunately, and Benedict distracted himself with art and music. Unaware of the toll that the trauma was taking on his mind, he expressed himself through his work and poured his anxieties into that. His body was littered with scars from the years of abuse, and he started to get tattoos to help cover them up. It was within his first tattoo shop that he talked about his drawings, and after displaying his work, he was able to get an apprenticeship. From there, he embarked on a career as a tattoo artist and eventually saved up the money to move out of Clyde's house and into his own apartment with a friend and fellow artist. His sister wanted to stay, never suffering more than second-hand anxiety from hearing Clyde yelling at Benedict, and Benedict let her in fear of what Clyde would do to her if she tried to leave. Even leaving himself resulted in a broken nose, but it was worth it to get away from Clyde.
Benedict would go on to visit his sister, but only when Clyde wasn't around. He cut off all ties with him once he was able to live on his own, but the trauma and self-deprecation couldn't be abandoned.
What happened to your character on Outbreak Day?:
On outbreak day, Benedict was with his roommate, Johnny, at their apartment. Strange things had been happening lately, and it finally broke on the news that there was mass panic and riots in the streets. Benedict and Johnny rushed to Clyde's house while he wasn't home in an attempt to get his sister to leave with them, but unfortunately, Clyde came home before they had a chance to vacate the premises. Having already witnessed the dead walking among them, Clyde knew that the world as they knew it was ending. Reckless, he shot Johnny in the head when they tried to leave with Benedict's sister, gloating that he could protect her more than Benedict and his friend could. The family tried to make it out of town, but she would never make it past the treeline. Alone once again with Clyde, with tensions high from the fresh death of his sister, Benedict had to travel out of the city with him whether he liked it or not.
Describe your character's life after the Apocalypse:
Benedict traveled alone with Clyde for the first portion of the apocalypse, until they stumbled upon Aki's stronghold. After much deliberation, the pair was allowed inside of the community. They lived there for about half a year before Aki had to kick Clyde out due to his reckless nature and the danger that he posed to the community. Clyde demanded that Benedict go with him, despite his own standing within the community and the close relationship he had formed with Aki's daughter, Haruka. Unable to say no to his threats, Benedict left the safety of the community with Clyde.
They were not alone for long, however. Clyde very quickly made bad friends in bad places, something he had always been good at, and a ragtag gang of bandits was formed. The group traveled around the outskirts of Virginia, robbing and killing for sport and supplies. Benedict refused to be a part of it, and was ridiculed for it, but ultimately left alone. That is, until Clyde set his eyes on a bigger profit. Using his son as a means to an end, he scoped out communities that seemed weak and had Benedict infiltrate them as an unrelated survivor. He would live within the walls, learn their weak spots, and then let the bandits in when the time was right. Clyde and his men would strip the community clean, killing anyone who crossed them. Benedict didn't like it, but with a gun against his head at all times, didn't know what else he could do.
Clyde had always held a strange kind of power over him, and he knew it. So it wasn't long before he set his eyes on the ultimate prize: revenge. Clyde's group made plans to break into Aki's stronghold and destroy it while he was out on a run, but Benedict's feelings for Haruka prevented him from getting on board. Clyde promised that if he helped, they could take Haruka and ensure that she would be safe. Usually unwilling to participate in the raids, Benedict let his selfishness get in the way just once and agreed to help them get inside as long as she could be safe.
Haruka was captured, the community fell, and the gang of bandits went on their merry way. But Haruka was unhappy, crushed to be away from her father, and uncomfortable to be within the raider lifestyle. After months of travel, Benedict found courage to leave Clyde and run away with Haruka. Together, they fled in the middle of the night and traveled together for about half a year, uninterrupted. He was happy, and finally starting to feel safe in his own skin. Always with impeccable timing, Clyde finally caught up to his son and his friend. They attempted to flee, but Benedict was shot in the back by his own father and collapsed to the ground. He begged Haruka to run, and he has not seen her since.
Currently, he is still travelling with Clyde and the bandits, nursing his wound and trying to find a new community. All his life, he has done Clyde's bidding because of the gun to his head, because of his fear of death. But now, he isn't sure that living is so great anymore.
