Gabe and Fin had decided who was going to stay in the truck and watch the kids with a game of rock-paper-scissors. Loser had to go looking for gas. They still had a little left, but they hadn’t been able to find any for days. It was dark now, which was the best time to search for supplies, in Gabe’s opinion. Yeah, it made it harder to see, but that also meant it was harder to be seen. Besides, his night vision had gotten pretty good.
He didn’t even have the gun with him, just his metal bat and his knife. They only had one gun, and it only had a little ammo. Gabe figured it would be better to leave it with Fin, to protect the kids. He was only a couple blocks away from them, but it still made him nervous not having them in sight. He preferred to keep the group together, and hated when they had to split up for reasons like this.
He made his way past a small playground, avoiding the notice of a couple of roamers that were lingering there by keeping quiet and keeping to the shadows. There was an apartment building a little further ahead, and he skirted the edge of it, around to the back, intending to cut behind it toward the building on the other side of the street. There was a group of cars parked in the back parking lot though, and he paused when he saw them. They looked like they’d been there a while, but it was worth a shot.
He approached the lot slowly, keeping to the shadows of the building and peering around cautiously before approaching the first car. He pulled the flashlight, screwdriver, and his makeshift gas jug from his bag. He flicked the flashlight on, but kept his hand over the beam so it wouldn’t draw attention. He aimed a small corner of the beam under the car until he found the gas tank. He used his screwdriver to punch a hole in the tank, wincing as the noise echoed. He pushed the jug under the hole, hoping to hear the sound of liquid hitting plastic. No such luck.
He cursed quietly to himself and crept to the next car to repeat the task. A quick glance around told him the first noise hadn’t attracted any attention, but he knew he wouldn’t continue to be lucky for long. He had four more cars to check, he just hoped one of them yielded the gas he needed before he was discovered by anyone.
