Describe your character's life before the Apocalypse:
- Maria was born to one branch of a very large Californio family with roots in California going back the time of the Spanish Missions before Alta California and the rest of Mexico gained its independence from Mexico. Her great-great-great grandfather, Mariano Guadalupe Vallejo, held the highest military command in Alta California when John Sutter lead his Texas-styled Bear Revolt, and one of the biggest land holders.
The irony would be General Vallejo believed Alta California would be better off joining the United States than living under rule from Mexico City, but American Immigrants behind the Bear Revolt were so set in their revolt they would not hear it, and held him captive anyway. Even negotiated a letter of capitulation that provided that neither he nor his family would be taken prisoner, those who remained outside his home during the negotiations refused to sign. In General Vallejo's opinion there would have been no need for war, but there was. The Mexican-American War rendered the Bear Revolt immaterial, and Alta California became part of the United States.
Even though he helped shape the transfer, like many Californio land holders, he could not afford the fees of the exorbitant legal process set up for Calfornios to keep their claims under the new government. The Vallejos would lose and give away most of their holdings through the rest of the 1800's, and many generations later, Maria's branch of the family had long fallen out of any inheritance, but family responsible for founding and naming a couple cities through Northern California.
All of that past glory made for fun family stories, but counted little for day to day life generations later. It was a legacy that plus her parents' Catholicism meant tradition was strong in Maria's most formative early years.
The Vallejos were still well off enough that her father, Rafael, had no trouble going on to be a medical doctor. He traveled to Guatemala as a member of Doctors Without Borders, where he would meet Carmen Gutiérrez, a Guatemalan nurse. A year and a half later, he would return to California with his new wife.
Rafael and Carmen would settle in King City, CA, where Maria would be born. They did their best to raise her as a good Catholic girl... until the dead began to walk.
What happened to your character on Outbreak Day?:
- As a doctor and nurse at the local hospital, Maria's parents were on the front lines of the Outbreak. They saw the dead rising in number before many in the public. Taking the growing number of cases as a sign of end times, the packed up their small family, and joined part of their local congregation on a church owned ranch retreat. It was isolated enough, and well-stocked enough that it made for soft living post-apocalypse wise.
Describe your character's life after the Apocalypse:
- For the first year and half of the Apocalypse, Rafael and Carmen kept their little girl safe on the church ranch in the foothills of the Sierras. Having a family team of doctor and nurse was a real boon to the church group, so they did was still possible to make the Vallejos and their little girl comfortable. Until one night, a couple years in, a jealous rage on the far side of the compound brought a fresh outbreak, and proved to the survivors that you didn't have to be bit to turn.
One of the last and one of the only visitors allowed to stay was a self-proclaimed pilgrim from Colorado who told stories of the Faithful gathering in Denver under the protection of the Second Coming himself. It was easy enough to dismiss until the destruction of their safe haven turned previously religious but rational people like the Vallejos into superstitious zealots. The end times were certainly all around them, they felt foolish for dismissing news of Jesus' return.
Off they journeyed to Denver with Maria in tow. They met and were taken in by Brother Brett and his followers in the Colorado Convention Center. The first couple days, it seemed it had been everything the pilgrim had preached it was. Then they were caught off guard by their first presentation of “sacred” cannibalistic meal. They tried to politely refuse, and were given a pass the first time, But Brett and the other cultists took their future repeat refusal as heretic, and took Maria away from her family. Maria could be conditioned over time, her parents would require... greater efforts.
Maria never saw them alive again, and she would have been raised as one of the cultists loyal followers, if not for fate. Fate would bring other children whose parents were missing, and two girls slightly older than her whose parents were long dead before they encountered Brett's bloodthirsty salvation. Dakota Snow and Clementine. Listening to the other children's stories brought her first and greatest disillusionment with the Faith she had bene taught to follow all her young life.
Together with three boys in the same boat as them, Johnny, Ricky and Yury, they planned their escape. Only she and the two girls, Clementine and Dakota made it out alive. Now the three girls sit and wait for a promise of new family... but Maria is concerned she has found it already. If these girls' Papa Bear can be found, all the better. Maybe God has not given up on her completely.
