They'd been traveling for a while, the five of them. An attorney, a professor, a younger guy, and two children. This was what the group had come to be after Louisiana. Clayton saw no future for Colette and Arcade's group, and elected to go on with Anthony and the girl, Leigh, to Florida. Anthony was attempting to find a brother of a man who'd saved his life in Miami. A noble endeavor, though Florida seemed one of the worst places to be come summer, given the heat and humidity. Still, Clayton wanted to leave, and a group of three was better than traveling alone. Plus, Clayton was reasonably certain that Leigh Anne knew how to use a weapon better than either Anthony or himself. Candy was too young, still. But, part of this trip was for her, too. She'd been looking for someone in Florida. As for Aron, it seemed he felt that he owed Anthony, and had elected to come along.
They were in Mississippi now, but still had most of their journey ahead of them. Sometimes Clayton considered trying to sway Anthony to travel north, maybe to Virginia or DC, but that would be an awkward conversation. Perhaps they'd find a settlement along the way and stay there, or find one in Florida. They were walking along the open highway when Clayton spoke up.
"We're low on water. Three full bottles--won't get us much farther. We need to check every gas station, rest stop. Food will be there too, if we have any luck."
Anthony only nodded, while Leigh sighed. "Yeah, what's new, though? Always running low...always thirsty and hungry and not many bullets."
"Yes." Clayton responded curtly, without any more thought. There was no conversation to be had, she was just complaining. Clayton didn't mind necessarily, but he wasn't going to fill the air with needless talk.
