Describe your character's life before the Apocalypse: To say that Kelsey Chmabers ('nee McNeal) grew up a Valley Girl is like saying that the sun rises in the east and sets in the west...why state the obvious? Despite that, she grew up the only child of Allen & Patricia Chambers (though she hardly knew her mother, however; her mother died when Kelsey was 3). After graduating high school, she went on to college and eventually went into nursing, finding something she was supremely good at. Her supervisors noticed this and encouraged her to go back to nursing school tog et her Masters in Nursing Education; meanwhile, she soon grew to love the profession of nursing, rising to become an ICU Nursing Supervisor at L.A's MLK-Drew Regional Medical Center, long known in the region as "the Gun & Knife Club" for the tremendous number of gunshot and knife victims treated there. It was while working there that she met, fell in love with and married her husband, Ben, who worked for the LAPD.
What happened to your character on Outbreak Day?: As a nursing supervisor, she was in the same position her husband was as a cop - long hours, back-to-back shifts; on Outbreak Day, conditions at MLK-Drew had devolved to such a degree that the decision was reluctantly made to close the hospital lest they lose additional medical staff. Unfortunately, just as they were leaving, the hospital began to get swamped by a toxic mix of gangbangers, residents seeking medical help and walkers biting people everywhere. Barely escaping with her own life, Kelsey was rescued from there by her husband and the two of them headed to what was, surprisingly, the safest place in the rapidly falling-apart metropolis that had been Los Angeles: the now-fortress like 77th Street Division offices.
Describe your character's life after the Apocalypse: As the enormity of the situation began to dawn on them, they figured they had two choices: either leave the region for safer ground...or try and rebuild some semblance of civilization. Along with several dozen others - a mix of cops, Guardsmen and surviving South L.A. residents - they began clearing out areas immediately around the station, creating a safe zone of sorts, an urban fortress. As the Division's most-experienced nurse/medic, its' her job to keep everyone as safe and healthy as possible, all the while working alongside everyone else to keep the area safe.
