Describe your character's life before the Apocalypse: Growing up in a working-class Queens neighborhood, Tamara Lyell was a tomboy in the urban sense of the word; if there was a game of stickball or basketball going on, odds are she'd be right in the middle of it. Sure, she'd get a few scrapes here & there but she also learned a lot about life in the process. Graduating with honors from St. Agnes HS, she surprised a lot of people in her family by opting to attend Army Aviation training, eventually serving a total of six years as a warrant officer/aviation pilot, honing her craft in various helicopters, including both the Hughes OH-6 & OH-58 Little Birds.
In mid-2002, Lyell - who'd been given the nickname Tegan due to her resemblance to a Canadian music star - left the military to join Blackwater Aviation, taking the skills learned in the military over to the world's pre-eminent private military company and working for them until early 2013. During her time with Blackwater Aviation, Tegan flew in both Iraq (most notably as part of Blackwater's 'Thunder Runs' between Baghdad and Najaf) and Afghanistan. In addition, she also helped airlift supplies and supervise rescue/recovery efforts following Hurricane Katrine in 2005.
What happened to your character on Outbreak Day?: Outbreak Day for Tegan began at Blackwater's Salem, Ct. aviation center, where she was working as an instructor pilot for the company's fleet of MD-500 helicopters. Receiving instructions to fly a group of Blackwater operators into the Big Apple to rescue a diplomatic client, Tegan and her band of operators climbed into one of the MD-500s' and flew down to New York City in an attempt to rescue the client in question, a Qatari diplomat with the Qatari UN mission.
En route, the MD-500 began to be fired upon - by whom, no one knows - and during one burst of fire, several rounds struck the chopper between the cabin and the tail rotor, severing a hydraulic line. Using her flying skills, Tegan autorotated the MD-500 onto a field in North Queens; over the course of several weeks, her and the other Blackwater operators made their way towards Rikers' Island (where they'd been trying to land after losing the tail rotor in flight). Eventually, they managed to make it to the Island, joining the corrections staff, assorted police, civilians and inmates that'd survived thus far as part of the Island.
Describe your character's life after the Apocalypse: If Daniel Hayden is the heart of the Island's Scout/Scavenger force, Tegan Lyell is the force's Brain; her eidetic memory has helped them secure supplies in locations few would remember and her loyalty to the Island is unquestioned. Often, she can be found teaching combat skills to fellow Scout/Scavengers, working with them as a master would with an apprentice - not scolding them, not berating them but patiently working until they have their skill sets down pat. Whenever she's not assisting others in the force or out on missions outside the Island, Tegan can be found in the Maintenance area, working on her pet project: restoring the MD-500 she flew back on Outbreak Day, with the hope of someday using it to fly to-and-from various places within the Big Apple.
