“Hurry up! I don't like it out here. It doesn't feel safe.” The voice of her youngest sister, Kylie was no more than a whisper, but they were the same concerns that she had running through her own mind. The lack of those THINGS was a little unsettling. She kept expecting them to just appear around the corner, trap them, bite them like they had done to other members of their group. Ashley would never be able to see her children again if that happened. It was her greatest fear.
“Please...” Her sister began again. Ashley looked over her shoulder at Kylie.
“Ky, shut up.” There was a slight annoyance in her tone, but only because she knew that Kylie would voice more of their shared fears. She didn't need to be focused on the fear. The fear could cripple them. They needed to be strong. “If I am going to be able to do this, I need you quite so I can focus.”
Ashley turned her attention back to the task at hand and the lock pick set she was now working with. Sure there were easier ways to get inside a house. Breaking down the door, busting out a window, but both of those made more noise then Ashley was willing to especially with just the two of them out here tonight. They had just left the safety of a much larger group and a very sturdy old factory building earlier that day in order to search for their family. The group hadn't wanted to “waste time” searching for people who were already dead.
The thought infuriated Ashley. After everything they had done to protect the group. Risking their lives to save others. All the supplies they gathered, but yet the group hadn't wanted to waste time looking.
Damn it! Why was this taking so long? It should be simple. She'd done it so many times in the past two years. Glancing at her shaking hands, she knew why it was taking so long. She wasn't focusing enough. She was to inside of her head.
Ashley took a deep calming breath and set back to work. Click. Despite the circumstances, a smile spread across her face at a job well done. She put her kit back into her backpack and turned to her sister. “Be ready. Look for food, medicine, anything we could use.”
She glanced over her shoulder at the older model Nissan car that they had come across after two hours of walking. Her daughter, Camille was hiding inside while they checked this place out. Normally she wouldn't have wanted her so far away without someone Ashley trusted there with her, but there was no telling what they might find inside. A quick search and she could get back to her daughter's side.
Without thinking anymore about it, Ashley took her first step into the house, prepared for whatever might be inside waiting for them.
