Arcadia Bay, OregonWho would've thought that we'd make it all the way to the Pacific Coast? Sgt. Sledge thought as he sat outside a cafe in the small stronghold of Arcadia Bay, Oregon, looking out at the Pacific Ocean and marveling at the simple fact that the Expedition had succeeded yet there he was, puffing on his pipe, looking out oat the ocean and marveling at the success of it all.
In the space of roughly six months or thereabouts, an expedition of roughly 1,000 individuals - soldiers, medics, doctors, engineers, scouts and so forth - had traveled from Belle Isle, Michigan to Arcadia Bay, Oregon, marking the first transit of the United States from a major location since March 2013. The Expedition Commander, Colonel Schlichter, had commended them all for making the arduous journey through some of the roughest terrain in America. They'd set up, for instance, airfields and functioning airports from Wisconsin to South Dakota to Idaho and Utah.
They'd mapped out highways and roads, checked and examined infrastructure - bridges, overpasses, roads - and provided rudimentary medical and law enforcement assistance to a population that, surprisingly, was growing despite the lack of communication with the Eastern U.S.
But we did it, he mused...and I even got a rocker for my trouble, looking at the staff sergeant's insignia on his ACU blouse, a meritorious promotion given due to his actions in saving the civilian from walkers and from his vehicle back in Rapid City.
It had also helped that the Fighting 6th, the core of the Expedition, weren't the only infantry out here; late in the going, West Point had ordered the 6th's sister regiment, the Fighting 5th - Colonel Hargrave's regiment - flown by air with their supplies and weapons and everything imaginable along the route the 6th had set up....
....and it was good that they here, he thought, getting up and grabbing his M14 SIR, pausing as he turned and looked off to the east, because I got a feeling we're going to be heading to the heart of Mordor before this is all over...

Mt. Angel Abbey, OregonSitting in one of the numerous Humvees parked around the grounds of the Mt. Angel Abbey, Tegan sat and watched the activity around her, notepad and pen in hand, Hanging in the center of the Humvee was her HK-416, unloaded; on a front peg hung the strap for her ever-present Stetson, a set of cavalry swords pinned to the front of it.
Still can't believe we got "drafted" back into government service, she mused, noting the eagle pinned below it, indicating the rank of a colonel, but we couldn't've picked a better unit to be drafted into, seeing the rainbow colors of one of America's iconic infantry units, New York's 69th Infantry Regiment. The Fighting 69th, she mused, a unit her grandfather, Army S.Sgt. David Lyell, had served in during World War II (back when it was known as the 165th Infantry Regiment) landing at both Makin Island and Saipan. If you could see me now Grandpa, she thought, holding the regimental patch in her hand, all-but-feeling the colors underneath her fingertips.
She still remembered the circumstances in full detail: as the Expedition had made its way south around Portland and through the Salem area, the Expedition's commander had noticed all the dozens and dozens of civilian and military vehicles and had talked with her about her group rejoining the United States military in some capacity. Her response had been, "let me talk to everyone; I'll get back to you in 48 hours."
Well, after lots and lots of conversations amongst everyone, they'd taken a vote - an actual pen-and-paper vote, supervised by the Abbey's director, Abbot Jeremy Driscoll, and by an almost unanimous vote, they'd accepted his offer of service. And thus New York's Own, the Fighting 69th, was reborn out of the ashes of the apocalypse, Tegan whispered to herself. To emphasize the point, one of her group, a former Rikers' guard, had attached an old regimental flag of the 69th's to her Humvee antenna. When she went, that flag went and where that flag went, they would follow.
Hearing the radio crackle, she set down her notepad and picked up the handset. "Yeah, go ahead," she spoke.
"Tegan, its' Bam," came the reply, "morning services about to start, Boss."
"Be right there," Tegan replied in turn, setting down the radio handset. Sliding her notepad into a jacket pocket, she climbed out of the Humvee, reaching back in to grab both her Stetson and her rifle, slinging the 416 over her shoulder and placing the Stetson on her head. Making sure everything was in place, she turned and headed for the Abbey for morning services, a full day's activities ahead.

Astoria, OregonStanding outside what had been, in pre-apocalyptic times, Astoria City Hall, Marshal Winchester sipped some tea - freshly brewed Ceylon tea - that had made made by a British Relief kitchen that had set up alongside an American field kitchen assisting residents of the Astoria-Warrenton stronghold (technically, the two are separate but work together). While she was still recovering from the flight out west from Belle Isle - a two-day affair aboard a C-119 supply aircraft with stops in Rapid City, Salt Lake and Mountain Home - Dana was at least grateful to have made it out west; although she hated to leave the City-State of Detroit, she was sure Deputies Jackson and Underwood could handle law enforcement duties in her absence.
And speaking of the British, Dana was still kind of surprised at their presence; she knew the Brits had a presence in Canada - plenty of them visited the City-State, for instance - but on the West Coast? That was the surprising part, for there were plenty of Brits present, up and down the Pacific Coast. From what she had been told by two long-term Oregon residents, Thomas Kane and Hazel Farrell, the British - six naval warships (technically 4 Limeys, a South African and a Dutch warship) had shown up on the lower Oregon coast near the stronghold of Winchester Bay offering assistance to the survivors. It was, she was told, an offer everyone was skeptical of but the British commander, Capt. Wagner, had put zero conditions on the assistance.
Basically, if accepted, they would assist the stronghold up and down the Oregon coast along with the interior strongholds around the city of Salem; if not, they would bid everyone adieu and head down the coast. After weeks of negotiation, shepherded and assisted by the monks of Mt. Angel Abbey, everyone had come to an agreement.
(1) The British would stay and advise/assist the strongholds along the coast and at the mouth of the Columbia River. (2) Winchester Bay would assist strongholds in the south of Oregon (3) Mt. Angel Abbey would be neutral ground for everyone
All this was done because everyone, from Astoria down to Winchester Bay, had a common enemy - the insurgents living inside the city of Portland; the city would have to be dealt with eventually and Marshal Winchester knew that all too well. If its' anything like Detroit was, she thought in-between sips of tea, Portland will be a hellscape, an absolute hellscape. It was bigger with more mountains, bridges, tall buildings and highways than the Motor City contained and the insurgents had had eight-plus years to prepare the city; for what, she didn't want to know.
Finishing her cup of tea, Marshal Winchester was about to walk back over to the Relief kitchen when someone - an American trooper from the Fighting 6th by the looks of him, called out, "Got a prisoner for you to interrogate, Marshal."
"Lovely," she replied, "take him to interview room 1," adding humorously, "and find Marshal Howard and tell him to get his ass to Interview Room 2 so he watch how an interrogation's actually done...."

Hazel sat back in the passenger seat of the troop transport truck as she stared down at the map of the territory upon her lap. Since the British had arrived, days seemed like weeks. Battles have been fought and fresh life's lost. The British presence had ignited every hostile threat east and south of Winchester Bay.
This wasn't even the main event. Portland had yet to come. But Winchester Bay held strong and was in a better place than it had been before the British made contact. She couldn't lie. If the British hadn't given air support within the first week, all would have been lost and Winchester Bay would have fallen. But the line was held and they managed to push back hostile threats. With her recent victories, her forces were now split, one portion on defence to clean up any remaining threat, while the bulk of her force, with her Allie groups, were now moving south.
The view of the British had changed to a more welcoming tone. The Winchester Council was even in talks about opening an embassy, but it was one path Hazel had hoped to avoid and not go down. She had hoped to make Winchester Bay a beacon on her own, but that dream was dead and it had been the British that had helped keep Winchester Bay on top. She had recently been shown reports of US troop movement within the territory, but she had long-lost hope of US troops coming to her rescue or seen them as saving graces. But it had been British involvement that made her unsure who to side with if needed. In the end, it was the people of Winchester who saw them as saving graces.
Hazel opened the lead truck's door as the convoy came to a stop outside the main gate. In her dirty FBI tactical wear, Hazel jumped to the ground and let out a shout.
" OPEN THE GATE," Hazel waited for a reply, " COME ON, TODAY"
Her troops needed rest, now more than ever. The days had been tough and there was no time to return home to their loved ones as another battle loomed. She needed her troop convoy safe within the walls, if not for the troops then for the two fuel tankers recently filled at a new depot south-east of Winchester Bay.

Shauna slowly approached Sgt. Sledge in an uneasy and twitchy movement. It had been a month since she had seen her sister and the thought of her being near sent her into a state of cold turkey. She needed to be near her and that was all she needed. Her sister still sent letters and they remained in close contact as could be. But it wasn't the same to been near her.
She stood close to him, but not too close. She was unsure if she should distribute him as he looked at ease. There were few days like this when you could just relax, troops to move and supplies to protect.
" Sir" Shauna's voice was shaky " I heard a report my sister is near and I need to see her."
Shauna had few people she was comfortable with, and Sledge was one she had learned to trust. She knew her judgment was at times clouded and when her sister was not here, she'd turn to Sledge for clarity.
She had gotten use to being in the field and enjoyed being her own boss. The only thing she was missing was her daughter, and she'd give anything to be with her twenty-four seven and watch her grow. But serving the front line was her penises.

As he was preparing to head over to the diner for lunch, Sledge heard someone call out to him...
Looking over, he could see Shauna standing almost next to him, just a step or two back. It didn't take him but a moment to remember where Shauna's sister was; waving over a radio operator, he picked up the handset and keyed the mic, setting the specific channel on the handset he wanted before he did. "Scorpion 6 Medical, this is 1-6 Alpha; can you check on someone for me?"
Leaning over, he said to Shauna, "Sinead was a medical student when everything went down, correct?" pausing as the radio crackled its' reply. "6 Medical, go ahead."
"Can you find a Sinead Kelly for me, 6 Medical? Is she there or isn't she?" he asked.
"Wait one," came the reply; moments later, "1-6 Alpha, she's here at the Medical Center, watching over some minor injuries. Anything else you need?"
"Negative, thanks," Sledge replied, handing the radio handset back to the operator. Looking over at Shauna he said, smiling, "Your sister's over in the Medical Center, Shauna; its' right next to the Expedition HQ so it shouldn't be but a short walk there."

Expedition Medical Center - Arcadia Bay, Oregon"Alright, try and flex your arm out...there you go, Specialist; give it another 24 hours and you should be good to go," Catherine said to the young woman sitting on the exam table. Having sprained her elbow assisting engineers days before, the specialist had been placed on sick call for a couple days to let her elbow recover and to ensure there wasn't any permanent damage that could hinder her.
It wasn't the most glamourous of medical work, Catherine mused, but with battle casualties in good shape and the expedition having succeeded, I couldn't've gotten better news this morning than what I did.
The letter had arrived via. air mail, on one of the C-119's that flew from point-to-point, east to west and back, and she was pleasantly shocked to find the letter addressed to her; oh, how she wanted to show Nicholas the good news but first, duty called.
Before she could call, one of the medics called out, asking if there was a Sinead Kelly in the medical center. Catherine knew Sinead was there and signaled to the medic likewise. Glancing over, she said, "Looks like you've got some company coming," smiling. "If you want, I'll finish up the last two or three while you see who's coming, alright?"

Shauna comforts Sgt Sledge on his motives.
Shauna smiled and began to fidget even more at the thought of being near her sister again. The idea of been away from her for so long was like the ultimate punishment in her view, she could hardly understand how she went so long without her the first time round, but most of all she hoped that she had brought back some photos of her child. As she turned something clicked and Shauna went from regular nervous Shauna to Medical Shauna. The side of her where she focused on work and that focuse was on Sgt Sledge. The fidgeting decreased, her longing for her sister was still there but that was not the priority . She turned to Sgt Sledge and approached without a breeze and took a seat beside him. Her head twitched slightly to the left as she spoke, making sure to be her charming self and spoke with confidence.
" You don't mind, do you" Shauna gave a flirty smile, but more to relax him than flirt, " Been a long day so far, getting two minutes to sit is like a luxury these days. Don't you think sir ?"
For a second her attention turned to the Pacific, watching the waves was relaxing and she was sure she'd be willing to watch it all day if ordered. Her eyes turned and locked on to Sgt Sledge, trying to get a read on him.
" You have to love the sea, I always feel like if I just look hard enough I might just see Tír na nóg." with a smile she still stayed focused on Sgt Sledge ," How are you holding up? The pressure of the command can be overwhelming at times."

"I don't mind," Sledge replied, smiling as he grabbed a chair from a nearby stack and found a place sit down and relax as she went to check on her sister Sinead. In a way, he felt good for her; her sister was still alive, still amongst the living. While she was away, he took out an old photo from pre-apocalyptic times - it was a picture of him with his younger brother Eugene and sister Miranda and wondered what they'd be doing were they still alive. Folding the picture up, he slid it into an ACU pocket as Shauna joined him, sitting down next to him with the wide expanse of the Pacific Ocean out in the distance.

"I'm holding up alright," he replied, looking out at the Pacific. "Beautiful sight, isn't it?" nodding towards the ocean. "Reminds me of the Gulf of Mexico and the waves rolling into Ocean Beach when I was growing up.
"As for me? Like I said, I'm holding up. I remember back at West Point when we were going through NCO training the instructors used to tell us, for instance, to only worry about the things we had direct control over. But it can a tricky balancing act because I've got to balance that with whatever orders come down from on high. It used to keep me awake at nights at first but you get used to it; you have to."

Shauna turned her attention back towards the ocean as the breeze hit her face, she wanted to just swim out and escape all her worries. Just forget about it all, if only it was that easy to just forget. When the tablets wore off the last time, it only took a few weeks before she forgot about her sister and maybe it would be the better option. When she did the maths, she didn't need her sister and her daughter. They wouldn't be in her life so why would she need to worry about them. But the chance of...
Shauna's attention turned back to Sledge before her mind wandered off even further.
" We love to worry, and if we don't have pproblems we tend to make some for ourselves," She began to fidget with her right sleeve of her jacket," No one ever says command is easy, not nowadays ."
She began to remember it was these thoughts that had got her into trouble the last time, she couldn't even remember if she had taken her meds. It was like a war with the two sides of her brain, one was saying to keep taken the meds and everything would be alright, but the other side of her brain grew more parodied by the day questioning if the meds were worth it.⁰
" You get used to it," Shauna gave a short laugh and then spoke calmly, " Forgive the laughter, but when your go down the rapids and have sharp rocks around you we don't get time to question orders we just have to have fate all will be ok. The problem is when the current is slow and we have too much time to think. That's when we make are biggest mistakes by been relaxed"
She reached into her pocket checking to see if she placed any tablets in her pocket. While one hand checked her pocket, the other turned to curling her hair with her finger and all the while stayed focused on ###.
" Have you got someone to huddle with, to talk with and just keep a social connection avenue a positive interaction."

Arcadia Bay, Oregon
It had been awhile since Nick was in particular form of combat at all. So he still had to get used to the fact that out here, anything could happen at anytime. Which didn’t surprise him at all, given that some people were crazy out here.
He knew that at some point Catherine would be done with her medical duties for today and she would share how her day had went. Years had gone by and to him, they felt like a blur. The two had married in New York after one of their expeditions with President Michner being the best man, given that everyone of his family and friends were dead. But he had gained a new family in spite of all of that.
Before they had gotten married Catherine had told him of every crime she had committed just to stay alive, why she was called the evil doctor. During the United States state of emergency from 2013 to 2018. Which had confused Nick when the president had explained it to him.
”We are still under a state of emergency in a majority of the old union, however until I had assumed the role the whole contentious 48 states as well as Alaska and Hawaii were still under a state of emergency. Because we had no idea and still have no idea if any of the old guard are still alive.”
The thought rang in Nick’s head and he had assumed that Florida was still under a state of emergency. He was outside and looking at the ocean while contemplating his thoughts. He wasn’t sure what was going to happen now, to him, it felt like his life was just a blur.
(OOC: Sorry if my post is rusty, I need to get back into it)

Checking out of the medical center, Catherine stretched and began walking out towards one of the beachside pavilions in Arcadia Bay, taking in several deep breaths and thankful to have made it all the way back from the bottom of the barrel. "Wonder where Nick went off to--oh, there he is," she whispered, walking quickly over to him and sitting down next to him.
"Someone told me you'd be out here," she whispered, giving him a hug and looking out at the ocean as it lapped up against the shore. "Peaceful here, isn't it?"

Nick gave her a hug back and smiled “Yeah, it’s very peaceful here, just wish I had more of my family and friends around. I’m real glad that I have you.” He said pecking her cheek as he wrapped his arm around her. He smiled as he basked in the peacefulness of the moment that they were in. He wondered what else they had to do today. He didn’t have anything in particular planned. He was just glad to be with Catherine.
Shauna Kelly: That helped, thank you
