Mt. Rainier National Park, Washington
Winter was made harsh because of the storms, it had damaged the the radio tower rendering all transmissions useless and Alex didn’t have the know how to attempt to repair it. Aside from that, the storms and snowy conditions made it impossible to travel Packwood to scavenge and pick up supplies. By spring most of her food supplies had been depleted. When spring came and most of the snow began to melt, Alex didn’t hesitate to make the journey to Packwood for supplies. This time she decided to round up everything, even making a 2nd and 3rd trip.
With the arrival of summer and the lack of rain, the distant thunder appeared to be a sign of relief along with the distant dark looking clouds, but what happened next, couldn’t have been any further from the truth.
While our scouting the surrounding areas for possible signs of infected or other survivors making their way to the Mountain View lodge, Alex observed the distant storm clouds and the awesome display of electric force, but it soon dawned on her the threat it presented. With the relative dry spell combined with highly flammable pine trees that made up much of the surrounding forests, this was definitely a potential threat, there was little more she could do but come up with a last resort evacuation plan. Heading back to camp, she began making the preparations of loading up a small trailer in the warehouse with as much fuel drums she could fit and subsequently began to fill them with diesel from the Generator’s reserve tanks. Once done with that, she began packing all essential supplies loading them into the back of the Land Cruiser and on the roof rack.
When all was done as she stepped outside. The faint smell of smoke caught her nose immediately. Anxiously she rushed to the ranger station and made her way to the roof. The position of the station made an excellent look out point as it overlooked most of the forest. She didn’t have to go far or high to see the rising wall of smoke in the distance, due south and south west. “Shit...” the fire was still far, but but if it even started to remotely spread north, she would have to evacuate before it reached the highway.
Alex continued to monitor the fire in the distance and by now could just make our the orange flames, the sun was beginning to set now but she could see and feel the winds had shifted in this direction. She had to make the decision now. “Fuck!” She cursed loudly as she kicked an old paint can sitting on the roof. She made her way down and back up the trail to her cabin and began grabbing the few things she hadn’t grabbed. The smell of smoke was stronger and visibility began to suffer from the invasive haze that set in.
After hooking up the trailer to the Land Cruiser, she set off down the road towards the main highway. Her headlights barely penetrating the haze to well. The wild life were fleeing, and Alex had slam on her breaks as a group of deer rushed out across the road. Carefully snaking her way down the road the glow of the fire lighting up the sky, but as she neared the bend just before the intersection the haze turned an orange glow. Pulling up the intersection, the mountain before her glowed a devilish color with it’s scorched earth, trees engulfed in flames, but what caught her eyes were the silhouettes of a horde she had failed to spot earlier because of the developing situation.
It was a hellish sight to behold as a mass of the dead were creeping out through the forest towards the highway, behind the horde the fires were bright and she could make quite a mass of the infected and even some of the fleeing wildlife engulfed in flames and creeping amongst the horde, spreading the fires. She observed a fleeing deer being enveloped and consumed by the swarm of infected and It was literally like hell had opened up and it’s contents were pouring into the world, like an invasion. The sight before her reflected upon her glazed eyes at the horrifying sight and her hands gripped the steering wheel so hard her knuckles began to turn white.
Noticing her Diesel engine, the horde began to advance toward her. Snapping out of her daze, she fumbled to reach the shifter, accidentally hitting the CD player on, before turning west on the highway and fleeing the scene.
The voice coming over the Land Cruiser’s speakers:
”And I heard as it were, The noise of Thunder
One of the four beasts saying,
‘Come and see’ and I saw, and behold a white horse”
“There’s a man going round, taking names
And he decides who to free and who to blame
Everybody won’t be treated all the same
There’ll be a golden ladder reaching down
When the man comes around
The hairs on your arms will stand up
At the terror of each sip and each sup
Will you partake of the last offered cup?
Or disappear into the Potter’s ground
When the man comes around”
“Hear the trumpets hear the pipers
One hundred million angels singin
Multitudes are marching to the big kettledrum
Voices calling voices crying
It’s alpha and omega’s kingdom come
And the whirlwind is in the thorn tree
The virgins are all trimming their wicks
It’s hard for thee to kick against the pricks”
“Till Armageddon no salam no shalom
Then the father hen will call his chickens home
The wisemen will bow down before the throne
And at his feet they’ll cast their golden crowns
When the man comes around
Whoever is unjust, let him be unjust still
Whoever is righteous, let him be righteous still
Whoever is filthy, let him be filthy still
Listen to he words long written down
When the man comes around”
The road was dark and hazy as she sped, what light she had came from her own headlights and the glow from the fire. Leaving The fire and the horde behind her as she sped down the highway, no certain destination, just... away. Even when the air cleared and the fire was long behind her she kept going. A lone set of lights on a dark and long highway left alone with the collapse of civilization and possibly the end of the reign of mankind.
”And I heard a voice in the midst of the four beasts. And I looked, and behold a pale horse
And his name that sat on him was death
And hell followed with him”
