Describe your character's life before the Apocalypse: -Chaotic at first...that about sums up Kate McCready's first few years on this earth; losing her parents at the age of three, she was shuffled through a couple of foster homes before landing on her feet with a Detroit-area family...once she got her feet planted on the ground, figuratively speaking, she started doing better in school and eventually - how?....even she sometimes wonders about that! - found herself making it through high school with good-enough grades to get into Wayne State University, graduating there with a degree in communications and dreams of going into the law. Those dreams fell apart, however, when, following a routine checkup, she was told she was HIV-positive, most likely the result of a one-night stand (her best guess, but given the number of partners she had in college, she's not sure which one-night stand it was...). Knowing she had a Damocletian sword hanging over her pushed her surprisingly towards a medical career, one which she intended to pursue had Fate - and the Great Pandemic - not intervened.
What happened to your character on Outbreak Day?: -Working as a bartender at a Midtown Detroit nightclub, she'd stayed overnight rather than drive back to her Greektown townhouse. Waking up to the sounds of what looked for all the world like a riot, Kate hurriedly packed up her clothes and things, locked up the nightclub and - after fighting her way through the surging crowds of panicky and frightened people - got to her townhouse, only to find to her horror that Greektown was in just as bad a shape as Midtown Detroit was at. Feeling trapped and not knowing what to do, she stayed at the townhouse, which belonged to her girlfriend Clarissa (where Clarissa was, Kate didn't know and still doesn't know to this day) and stayed there for a couple of weeks...after those weeks of fruitlessly hoping things would go back to normal, she was ready to end it all when she stumbled upon a note Clarissa'd left; though it was all-but-impossible to read, she did make out a location on it...Belle Isle.
Describe your character's life after the Apocalypse: Using the note as a guide, Kate traveled by night from her Greektown residence to the Douglas MacArthur Bridge, which connected the city of Detroit to Belle Isle. Finding the bridge closed off (at that time, it was closed; the barricades were turned into movable ones months later), Kate traveled east along Jefferson Avenue, eventually finding her way to a marina; grabbing a kayak and paddle, she lashed her meager belongings on it, climbed in and paddled her way across the Detroit River, joining the survivors at Belle Isle. Over the months and years that passed, Kate became the stronghold's resident Medic and despite not having much of a base of learning, she has become a trusted member of the stronghold and isn't afraid of anyone or anything, despite her somewhat pint-sized appearance...as she looks at it, she's already dead to begin with, so why bother worrying about such trivial things?
