Anthony smiled as Lex turned around and approached Yuri, bandaging his head. He was right. Stopping the source of the mess should have been the first step, but Anthony evidently hadn't been thinking too clearly. "Ah, good call," he nodded to Lex as he mopped at the floor.
What was there to say? Should he try to get to know the guy? Was now a good time--while they were cleaning off brains from the floor? Worth a try. "The water looks sudsy...hope it's, uh, antibacterial. Didn't teach us how to do this in law school, though," he attempted a horribly unfunny joke, and even blushed at how bad it had been. Christ, Anthony.
"He was a good kid," Anthony continued, eyeing Yuri. "He said some stupid shit and did some shit even stupider, but a good kid. Met him back in Florida. Miami." Anthony shuddered a bit as he said the city's name. He imagined it'd haunt him forever. He shook it off, though, and looked over to Lex, who was also cleaning.
The mess wasn't huge, but if Ellen wanted it spotless, they'd be here for at least a little while. "What's your story, then? Where you from? If you don't mind me asking, that is."
Lex pushed the mop around in silence as Anthony talked his ear off like a school girl having her first sleep over. It might have been cute, if it wasn't so damn annoying. First was the stumble through breaking the ice. A horrid joke really. And then cam the talk about himself, dropping little tid bits he felt was important, Law school. He carried himself like a Lawyer, crooked bastards every one of them. Always said one thing while thinking another and doing a third. And then came the inevitable inquiries about Lex's own past.
"Look," he started as he stopped mopping and met Anthony's eyes. "I'm not here to be buddy buddy with you, got that. And I'm sure as hell not about to swap life stories with you. Life's hard all around, I get that. The kid deserved better than spending his final living moments waiting to die and come back as something else. But don't think for a single moment that means I give a fuck about any of you." He was irritated and tired and snapped at Anthony. And he could see by the look in the man's eyes that his words had hurt.
Letting out a sigh, Lex rubbed at his eyes. "Listen, it's been a long journey... I'm tired and everyone's on edge... Sorry I snapped." In the military, he would not have apologized to him. He would have said his piece, the man would have fallen in line and then later they would be back to normal. It was how things ran, but in the civilian world, people weren't used to being talked like that. And they took it much more personally.
There was a long silence between them as they mopped the floor, but Lex knew that his words had hurt Anthony. With a sigh, he gave him one bit of information. "I was a soldier before all this went down. Wife and daughter... They didn't make it." That was all he was going to give Anthony, so it would have to be enough. He didn't do back story. Not even Rem knew everything about him. And she had been the closest person he had come to caring about sense the fated day. It was why he left in the first place. Guilt was a terrible thing.
Anthony had half-expected Lex to react this way, informing him he didn't want to be friends. Still, it didn't numb the sting as the words left Lex's mouth. Anthony did his best to shrug it off, but he couldn't completely. And Lex must've seen that, because without further prompting, Lex continued to apologize for the outburst.
He'd been a soldier. He lost his wife and kid. Anthony knew he wasn't going to say more. If someone opened up with that kind of story, that was all they were going to give...largely because it was all they considered to be important. "I'm sorry for your loss," Anthony said sincerely. He was sorry. He was sorry for every loss anyone had experienced since Day 1 of this mess.
Anthony still wasn't sure whether the ex-soldier wanted to work in silence or at least wanted something or someone to listen to. He figured he'd talk until he was told to shut up. "I was an attorney. In Miami. We just came from there. One of the guys in our group...well, you saw him. Name's Logan. And his daughter is Ellen. He brought us here. He could have left us, or only taken the able-bodied guys like Luca and Andrei, but he didn't."
Anthony paused for a moment as he worked out a particularly set stain. It wasn't from Yuri--it looked like dirt. He pushed and pushed and scrubbed, but made little progress. That was a set stain. But he worked at it as he continued speaking. "We had a larger group. Couple of little girls, a mechanic kinda guy, but they went their own way. Didn't like Logan, I guess. I'm not sure."
Lex smirked. "They didn't like the Knight in Shining Armor huh? Can't imagine why..." His tone was drenched in sarcasm. For the most part, Lex would listen to the man talk as they set to mopping up the remains of Yuri. He knew some people just needed to talk to calm themselves, he figured Anthony was one of them. And it wasn't like he was still prying into Lex's life. So he figured he could let the man keep talking, no harm coming from it after all.
