As Michael's daughter ran to him and grabbed his leg, Donnie couldn't help but slip a smile. He didn't realize he left such an impression on her. He put his hand on her head and let out a halfhearted chuckle as they gained eye contact. Michael came quickly, grabbing her and pulling her away with a slight 'oof' sound. Donnie returned Michael's look. Things were uncomfortable now. He wasn't sure if he should be mad at him or not. He 'got' him. He understood what he cared about, but he didn't know if this was the place for him, long term.
Michael let everyone know that it was okay to stay with the RV for the night, which was a nice gesture, but Donnie wasn't sure if this little make shift campsite was really safe enough to stay. Regardless, they didn't have much choice and he was sure the group was exhausted after the day they had.
Listening in on Matt's conversation, Marcus spoke up. "Good idea, Matt. I should introduce my group. Quentin is the big guy over there, Sarah's the girl by him, we have Verne here, Anya and, well, you already know Donnie." Marcus wore a smile as he landed on Donnie. "My name's Marcus," he turned to Michael, "and we're just passing through here from Pennsylvania. I don't plan on being a burden on your family. I want you to know though, if you wanted some security, some safety, you're free to travel with us."
Marcus lowered his voice and leaned closer to Michael. "It's dangerous out there, I'm sure you know that. You have a daughter...it's safer with a group. Sooner or later, you'll need to find one." He turned to start to walk away. "Don't answer now. Think about it."
Marcus turned away and approached Quentin and Verne, keeping lower tones as they started to talk to each other. Donnie decided he didn't want to deal with it now. Marcus had a bad track record with him. He could be different now after everything at Penn State, it would be hard to still be the same person after that.
Looking to Anya, he whispered. "We can catch up later, but I need to know...This group that you've put together, Marcus has been in charge. Has he been doing right by you?"
He nodded quietly. "I'll talk to you later."
Donnie left and approached Michael, motioning to talk to him on the other side of the RV. He waited for him to follow and leaned on the car. "Look, before you say anything, you don't owe anything to these people...and they don't owe anything to you. You can leave now if you want, or you can stay. If you stay though, people might look to you for support. I know that your family is the most important thing to you, but everyone needs help. We only survive together if we've got each other's back."
He folded his arms and awaited Michael's response. He seemed to be a good man, but, he didn't really know him yet.
