The smoke had filled the entire forest, and the light of the immense fire permeated into even the densest regions of trees. The night was dark, though the darkness was mitigated at least in part by the burning remains of the Bear Lake Settlement, causing the sky to lie to those who would look upon it. Instead of the black of night, the flames gave the void a bright orange tint.
The attack on Bear Lake had been executed perfectly, but Adolphus had not expected so many of its citizens to be trained and ready to fight to the death. That man, Logan McAllister, inspired the members of Bear Lake quite a bit. Though it did not matter anymore. He was dead, as were his two daughters, and most of the camp's inhabitants. The problem was that most of Adolphus' men were dead too. The small group that made it out alive was no longer a force to be reckoned with.
"We've gone far enough!" He shouted to those who traveled with him. For now, the plan was to get a distance away from the flames, as the walkers would likely be attracted to the light. They had traveled sufficient distance to stop for the night. Adolphus took a few steps toward Holly, placing a hand on her shoulder. "How are you, Holly? Are you well? I am so, so sorry for all of this. I...hadn't expected it to happen that way..."
As he finished speaking, Adolphus cast his gaze to the new member of his group--quite unexpected, truthfully. He was a member of the Miami group: Andrei. The man had been friends with Anthony and Remy, yet at the Battle of Bear Lake, when BB had begun to go rampant, Andrei was the one to bring him down, almost as if for Adolphus' sake. In the heat of the moment, there was nothing much else to say. Now, however, they had time.
"Andrei," Adolphus said evenly as he approached the younger man. "After all this--from Florida to Colorado, why? I killed that woman--Lilly--in Miami. Greg, too. Logan and his daughters. So, I need to know: why follow me now? You ought to hate me."
