Alex woke to a start and realized the darkness around her, with the moonlight she could see that the windows were fogged with condensation. How long has she been out? She looked at her wrist watch and cursed under her breath as she realized it had been almost 3 hours. Worst of all it was dark and she wasn’t sure she’d be able to find a safe place to park and camp for the night. With the power being out, the entire landscape was darkened, with only the moonlight and her headlights providing the only source of lighting.
She turned the ignition and to her horror, it made a weak turn over followed by the dreaded clicking sound. The battery was weak, if not dead. She tried again but this time not even the a crank. “Dammit!” She cursed loudly as she pounded the steering wheel. Frustrated she popped the hood and swung her door open and stepped out. The cold air rushed to meet her and it felt as if she had stepped into the freezer of a grocery story. Almost immediately as she walked around to the front of the explorer with her flashlight out and ready, that’s when she heard it. That familiar rasping sound, but this wasn’t just one, it was a horde! She could just barely make out the silhouette of the mass of bodies, when her flashlight’s beam crossed the vile sight.
As she reached for her M4, she realized that it was still sitting in its place in the Explorer. Moving quickly back around to retrieve it, that’s when she ran right into the infected that she had seen locked in the car. With a startled gasp, instinct kicked in and she drew her M9 and fired raised the barrel just under the creature’s chin and squeezed the trigger as it grabbed her. The weight of the now lifeless corpse, firmly grasping onto her vest pulled her to the ground.
Undoubtedly the horde was moving in on her position as she struggled to pry herself from its grasp. Upon doing so she quickly got up and made a run for the truck stop, gunning down any of the walking corpses in her path. Barreling through the doors, she bee lined for the bathroom just as the horde had reached the glass front windows of the store and slowly trickled in through the door. She placed her flashlight on the sink shining at the ceiling of the restroom as she proceeded to lock the door.
Alex knew she was very likely trapped in this little bathroom but but as she spun around she spotted the small window in the back of the restroom. Suddenly there was a bang followed by a ton of bangs on the restroom door. You could almost see that little dead bolt lock struggling to hold the door in place. “Fuck it...” she cursed as she opened the small window only to find it get stuck half way. The pounding and noise got louder at the door, as she battled against the neglected window.
Finally it budged and she desperately tried to squeeze through the opening, when the deadbolt gave way with a loud crash. She felt a dozen hands grab at her and pull her to the ground, her pistol was knocked from her hand across the bathroom. All she could do was scream when the commotion and everything stopped and the infected just stood there around her. Suddenly the horde parted and a single man in uniform came casually walking through. His face was half eaten, exposing his teeth and jaw, one eye was dangled from its socket.
As he popped his eye back before Lighting a cigarette and taking a drag and she recognized him as he blew out a cloud of smoke, the smoke exiting from the holes in his face and throat giving him an almost devilish appearance. “Did you really think you could get away, Pineapple?” Captain Hoyt spike before taking another drag...
Alex jolted awake, her heart racing, her eyes darting around checking her surroundings. The sun had yet to set, and everything was still in place. As she rested her face into her palms, rubbing her eyes and wiping away the remnants of tears. When she turned the key in the ignition, she was very relieved to hear the engine start right up without problems. Her tank was still low, but at least this was the real world or what was left of it anyway.
As she shifted into drive and began to continue down the road she watched as she passed the car with the infected woman, before stopping. She got out and walked over to the car, drawing her M9 in the process. Stopping at the passenger side, she opened its door and the creature fell out, rasping and reaching for her. Thumbing the safety, she leveled the pistol, aiming at its head and squeezed the trigger. “Rest In Peace...” she muttered as she thumbed the safety and holstered her pistol and walked back to her Explorer.
Once back in the explore, she popped one of her personal mixes CDs into the player and continued off down the quiet road.
The track began with guitar intro in A Minor and rhythmic hand claps.
