Liz sat back on her heels as he pushed her hair away from her face. She liked his touch, his kisses and she liked talking to him even more. She never really opened up too much. She knew that could only lead to people taking advantage of you. It's why she kept her nursing skills a secret when she got to Bear Creek. She didn't know how those people would add up, but she learned.
"I went from group to group when I left California. Things are never what they seem to be. I found camps, found groups. Most didn't know how to survive at first but when they did start to learn how to survive they lost morals and scruples. It's not something I could do with them. I just want to find people who feel the same way I do."
She looked at him and smiled. Her fingers traced along his jaw, against his beard. The subject changed the way she wanted it to change. She didn't like to talk about herself too much. Too her, that was a sign of vanity and she really wasn't a vain kind of girl. She liked to listen and learn more. It's what made her a good nurse.
"I wouldn't mind seeing the man behind this mask. I wonder what kind of guy he is."
"That's a hard balance to maintain out here. Easier in a settlement like the lake, but not easy. Out here... the things you worry about start to become very primitive and well, it changes people. I've seen it."
He thought back to the months after he had lost his wife. His group had been making the change from not knowing how to survive to losing their morals. Not like some groups but still, they were starting to see things only from their own side. It was survival. You do what you have to and that is it.
Her next comment focused back on him as her hands traced his jaw. He tried to remember who he really was. It all seemed so long ago. He had never had a place in this world that he could just relax in. Sure they had tried to do something with the schoolhouse but it had never been secure and it hadn't lasted that long either. They had been there less then a month before their walls had been caved in and the school had been flooded with walkers.
"Truth be told, I'm not sure I even remember who he is. It's been a long time. I stayed with one group the whole time, till about two or three weeks before I got shot, but we never had much. We always moved. We would stay somewhere for a couple weeks at most before the dead would push us out, well not always the dead. The living can be worse then the dead."
Liz sighed lightly as her fingernails continued to brush at the beard as if she were trying to comb it. Her eyes watched his lips and heard his words and she wondered if there would ever be a place that was truly safe. Even the settlement in Bear Lake could be taken down if there was a will and enough fire power from an outside group.
"Someone always wants what someone else has."
She didn't know about his experience with raiders or walkers but she could assume that he had enough to teach him well. He was alive this long.
"I don't know Dannie, but you have faith in her it seems, otherwise we wouldn't be here. I trust that she will take us to a safe place but we'll have to make it secure. Once we've done that I'll know who the man is behind the mask because it doesn't matter what he once was. It matters who he will become."
She leaned in and gently kissed his lips as her hands now cupped his jaw.
