Clementine and Dakota took a few seconds to realize what was happening, both finding cover in the doorway to the office. Maria meanwhile shepherded Lee and Tina down under the closest table. A taller shelf and a metal cabinet tipped over one a time, coming crashing down on the table Maria and the tots too cover under.
It freaked Clem out to see and hear Lee, Tina and Maria shriek when the top-heavy metal furniture trap them under the table. She forgot momentarily about the bandit voice calling for its friends, rushing to the pile of toppled furniture and table. ”Maria! Lee! Tina!”
Even with Dakota's help, Clementine could not find the leverage needed to clear the shelves or cabinet away from the table. Not a moment ago, she was ready to give up the hangar, whether it meant leaving on their own again or not. A mere minute later, she couldn't think of a way out of this.....without a whole lot of help from their new acquaintances. Hold on! We'll get you of their!”
Dakota:”Somone still has to go handle whoever's still out there. Fuuck...what're we gonna do??”
A mere three minutes after that first doozy, a second tremor set in. Rather mild in comparison, 2.1, only felt because it occurred so close and nothing fell. The building still rattled for near 10 seconds it lasted. It was nothing in comparison, but did leave behind a question. Was that one of the first aftershocks? Or was that 5.4 just a pre-shock to an even bigger quake to come?

Winter felt like a prisoner being interrogated sitting on the chair, completely helpless. And in another moment, she felt even more helpless. Growing up in Australia, she was not familiar with earthquakes and was not therefore ingrained in the procedures one was supposed to follow when an earthquake occurred.
Hunter sensed it before it happened. He had growled continuously, not hushing down even when Winter told him to. For the first few seconds of the quake, Winter was desperately trying to work out what was causing the noise and movement. Was it a tractor? A tank heading their way and threatening to mow down the hanger? It didn't make any sense.
It was when the girls took cover under the door frame and the table did Winter put two and two together. A large crate from a top shelf toppled over above her, she managed to clear out of her seat in time to avoid getting squashed, but her left arm took part of the falling object. Winter yelped, but bounced away. She was sure it would be massively bruised, and could only hope it wasn't sprained or broken. Adrenalin prevented her from feeling the pain for now.
She had also heard a muffled voice outside in the night before the earthquakes happened, but the immediate threat was clear to her - 3 children were trapped under the table. If the hanger was unstable and collapsed, they'd be dead for sure. The thought of abandoning the children never crossed her mind. Humans have evolved over millions of years to automatically and instinctively care for their young. The end of the world does not change this.
Hunter barked and barked from the centre of the hanger, unsure of what to do. 'Stay,' she called to him and slid over to the girls. She was not aware of what the other two men were doing, and decided to ignore the voice outside. Whoever laid beyond the hanger, they were probably facing the same problems.
'Hold on,' she called out to the girls and toddlers. She pulled on the shelf with both arms, it did not budge. Winter placed her left arm (it ached from the crate fall) and then her right arm to use her whole body to heave the cabinet. It did not move either.
A second quake followed, though much less intense.
'Do earthquakes come in threes?' she asked quickly. Winter removed her backpack and threw it aside. Squating, she saw a gap between the fallen shelf and cabinet and to the underside of the table. 'There's a hole, see if the two little ones can fit through,' she yelled out urgently, reaching her arms in between the gaps, hoping wildly they would be able to squeeze through.

Haley reacted instantly, her body moving as if running on instinct while she was just taken for the ride, rolling underneath the bus and covering her head with her hands. The quake was short, but, sharp and violent the world itself rattling itself apart around her. Rattling so much the rusted and decayed old bus was starting to get shaken to pieces, an old, rusted, pitted and certainly heavy driveshaft slamming to the stone covered pavement just inches from her head, cracking the tarmac underneath as it hit with a solid clang, engine oil half congealed from sitting for countless years splashing on her face and tactical vest leaving a small spattered black stain on its MARPAT camouflaged surface.
Crumbling.
Splintering.
Cracked masonry and swirling dust.
A man on fire lunging from the choking smokey darkness.
Creaaaak...crak... PTONG!
The bus juddered, shearing a bolt, the frame creaking and groaning, the whole vehicle listing dangerously to the left on its atrophied suspension as wheels that had not turned in years started to roll. It was slow at first, Haley not even truly noticing it even after the screeching of metal on metal snapped her back to reality, jolting upright and smacking her head off the chassis. The abandoned vehicle had already started to pick up speed, the solid differential casing, caked in road grime, rust and even more almost jellied stagnant oil slung too low to the ground for Haley to duck under it.
With no time to react, no time to roll out from under it before the wheels would surely crush her, she gripped onto the frame, hanging on for dear life as she was taken along for this bus' final ride, her rifle scraping along the ground hanging around her torso from its sling joining the dislodged driveshaft's cacophonous song. She glanced around. Her eyes had adjusted for the darkness yet hanging under this thing her field of view was drastically limited.
Something moved. She could see it.
A hand swiped under the bus, twisted bony and rotten, almost snagging her rifle sling! Retrieving the rifle and bringing it to aim would be a two handed effort. The girl needed all the extremities she had to cling on to the frame. She fumbled around, her hand reaching to her hip. The walker brought its head down, teeth gnashing, Haley barely bringing her arm away in time, her hand holding onto the nickel plated compact sidearm.
She put a shot into it. Two, in fact, for good measure, her ears ringing. The bus continued to roll. It went right over the creature's head as if there was no resistance whatsoever, the formerly human skull cracking, splitting open, spilling out what rotten remnants of brain matter were left like an overripe melon from the sheer weight all over the cracked, fissured ground.
This ride though, had to come to come to an end. Haley braced, tensing up out of instinct and squeezing her eyes shut for what felt like ages. If her memory served, there was still a building in her path. She counted the seconds in her head, the tyre still leaving a trail of black decayed zombie ichor right up until the point it smashed into a small administrative building.
It wasn't going all too fast, running speed really, however that was more than enough. Haley instantly lost her grip, the vehicle coming to a standstill as it ground out, beached on a more stubborn section of wall with both it and the structure itself groaning dangerously, as though it may simply collapse under its own weight.
Haley crawled out, coughing and spluttering. She just stayed there for a moment, on her hands and knees trying to catch her breath. Something soon caught her ear though. Shouting. Panicked, from inside the hangar she heard the gunshots from earlier. That building too, looked like it had been damaged.
She saw Hearst Castle crumble. She saw people burnt alive as the gas supply ruptured and ignited. She saw people crushed under tonnes of stone, people trapped, helpless, with nothing she could do as many of her former friends and comrades began chewing and devouring the injured. She wasn't going to let that happen again. She picked up her rifle and shouted to them, setting the sling back into a more comfortable position. The weapon itself didn't seem to be that damaged, just some heavy scuffs and scrapes that had torn through the black paint, leaving bare metal glinting through underneath.
"Hey! You okay in there?! I.."
She coughed again, still not fully recovered from the dust kicked up by her little bus trip. With her voice raised and clear though, it was far easier to tell more accurately her age. It didn't matter that she was raising her voice now, what with all the noise of the quake and the shouting from inside the hangar, anyone who could have heard them, would have by now, living and dead alike.
"...Fuck... I might be able to help! I can... I can keep my weapons lowered, just you do the same! And don't try shooting at me!"
She knew she was pulling one hell of a risk as she stood there outside waiting for the response of a bunch of unknowns inside an unstable building, not even behind proper cover as this place being an airfield it was naturally just so damn open. She paused. The logical side of her brain was screaming at her to get out of there, to ignore these people, to keep on going and not to look back but she pushed those thoughts down. There's no way she could live with herself if she did that, and she damn well knew it.

As quickly as he'd regained it, Thomas lost his footing once again. This time, to a tremor. The earth shook, and with it all those around Fr. Thomas. "Fuck!" The holy man spat as the world reminded its inhabitants of its dominion and its dominance.
Thomas was once again on the ground, though not unconscious as before. "Everyone alright?" He began to stand when the second tremor surged, which staggered the priest. Finally, Thomas stood, surveying the situation. This woman, Winter, had the right idea. They needed to get to a secure location. Though, anywhere outside of a building was the safest. The voice outside!
"You, out there!" Thomas called to the voice. What was he going to say? What was there to say? "Just--are you--are you alright out there?!" Thomas called the voice, seemingly belonging to a girl. Before he could continue, he noticed Winter pinned under a large cabinet. She was unable to budge. His eyes widened as he realized the children, too, had been lost in the rubble. Thomas called to the mystery voice once again. "Our weapons aren't on our minds--or in our hands! Please--help us!"
Thomas ran to Winter. "Hang on, hang on!" Thomas grabbed the cabinet and began lifting with all his might. "I'll get you out of here--hang on!" Thomas heaved, and heaved. Though he wasn't the strongest, the adrenaline was kicking in now as he helped this stranger. "I'm going to count to three, and you and I both push with all our might--okay? Then we get those kids, right?" Thomas was breathing heavily, out of exertion and panic. "Okay, okay. One..two...three!"

The earth was still for now, and the hangar itself was still structurally sound. Maria's first instinct was to just get herself out from under the shelf and cabinet. There was not much space for her to move around in under there. She pushed her slender arms against the cabinet. She choked on fearful tears, pounding one small fist on the cabinet when it refused to budge. : :klng!::
”¡Ayuda! Ayu-yu-yuda.... help..”
It was the cries of Lee and Tina just behind her that brought her out of her own panic mode. She couldn't give in to her own fears, the little tykes needed her. She was also relieved to have gotten them out of the way. Drying her eyes, she turned in the tight space to find and face Lee and Tina. They were huddled against the wall. She drew them closer, hugging them to comfort. She also checked each tot over, further relieved to find they fine except for a maybe a couple scrapes and bruises.
Hugging them tight as much to help calm herself as Lee and Tina, she called out to let Clem, Dakota and their newer acquaintances know they were okay if trapped.
”We're gonna be fine.. We... I mean we're good in here.. just a ll little scared. I can't move that cabinet, and it looks like...it's got the shelf thing stuck against the wall.”
hearing Dakota sounding frantic did not do Maria's already tattered morale any good. Kota was the oldest and often strongest seeming of the Canejos. Actually that went for Clem too. Ever since the cultists brought them into the children's recreation room back in Denver, Maria had often drawn and depended on their strength to pull through many tough situations. A few tougher than this. If Dakota lost it, then things might be way more serious than she thought.
Hearing Clem's voice remain calmer and steady though, kept Maria from giving back into despair.
Clementine:”Kotie.. They're fine... You go unlock the door. We're gonna need all the help we can get. But don't go out there... make them come in here if they're going to start something. Hopefully they need help too. And hold on, Maria. This cabinet's too heavy for me or Kotie...and looks like a our new lady friend too. If the Padre can't get it we'll have to find something to wedge in there and lift higher.”
Maria looked over the small opening around either side cabinet, ”I don't think even Tina or Lee could fit through the way it is.”
Peeping through the largest hole she could see Dakota unlock the door as she called out whoever was outside.
Dakota:”Door's unlocked..if you really mean to help come in.. Otherwise just go away. WE got our own problems. If you're here to rob us.. there's a whole restaurant kitchen and a couple stores full of food that's way easier to scavenge than the nothing we got!”
Gone was the frantic freaking from Kotie's voice, replaced by the the frustrated anger that always scared Maria, the few times she heard it in her big sister's tone. There was some relieft toknowthere was still fight in her spirit though.
The door was left unlocked for Haley to enter on her own as Dakota returned to join the search for anything to use as a lever. Maria turned her attention back to Lee and Tina, giving both the slightly calmer tots another gentle squeeze.

Haley checked her surroundings. Last thing she needed right now was a walker sneaking up on her, or perhaps a marksman taking a pop.
Clear.
Advance.
Clear.
She was hasty, but, methodical. Checking sightlines as she moved up, finding no threats before stacking against the wall near the door, doing exactly as she had learnt with Bam and co. She was a scout! Hearst's finest! Ora! Despite the seriousness of the situation, her mind wandered, starting to piece together just what her buddies would be saying right now seeing this. Bam would probably be proud, but she could hear the jokes from the rest of the team already. She sighed, quickly checking the doorframe for traps. Satisfied, she cautiously headed inside, ready to duck back behind whatever hard cover she could find at the first sign of trouble, but, with her weapon lowered and just hanging off its sling just as she said it would be.
She must have been quite the sight. She wasn't any older than the rest of the kids, in fact, perhaps even slightly younger in some cases being only twelve but she was armed and equipped to the absolute teeth, looking like a little commando with the now slightly oily tactical vest and the rifle.
"Thanks for not trying to take a shot at m- Oooh shit." Haley soon spotted the problem. At first, it looked worse than it was, the people under there weren't crushed just like so many at the castle, they were just unable to get free from their current predicament. As for whether they were injured or not, she couldn't tell. It was too dark to really see clearly. She could have sworn she saw toddlers under there too.
"Fuck. Not as bad as it looked, but, ah... still bad. I got this."
She jogged on over. The thing didn't look like it was wedged on anything, checking with her flashlight it didn't look like there was anything to fall on the people below either. It's just a cabinet, right? And it was tilted over, shouldn't be TOO hard. The girl gave it her best tug, the metal creaking and groaning in a strident protest as it shifted just a little, but, to no avail. Haley was strong for her size for sure, quite muscular too, but that size was only round about the 4'10 mark.
"Oooor not. Shoulda figured you guys tried that. Right. Uh. Y'all okay down there? Gonna get this shit off you in juuust a second."
She shifted position, moving around to get better purchase and allow the others to step in. "Gimme a hand here? Also, name's Haley. Nice to meet you. Lift on three. One. Two. Three!"

Clementine hurried to step in and line up with Haley. She nodded over her shoulder, "Thanks. I'm Clementine, and under here are María with our youngest, Lee and Tina." Clem wrapped her arms under the cabinet. Realizing how awkward and inneffectual her first stance would be in helping lift, Clem knelt down and got her shoulder into it. She started the count to get in time woth Haley and Kota once they would all begin to lift.

Dakota crowded in with Clem and Haley, adding her own quick introduction, "I'm Dakota and if you can help is do rhis, it's safe to say your. Canejo Vampiro, whether your just passing through Lakeport or not. Not always this rumbly around here. Usually can't even feel them."
Noting Clem's shift in position, she does likewise. Mentally timing the count, she hefted up on Haley and Clem's three. The cabinet finally lifting up woth a creak. "María, see if you all of you out this way. I dunno how long we can hold it."

María's heart and spirits lifted when she saw them line up. She didn't quite inteoduce herself though, already trying to think of a way to get the tots out on her own. It looked like it was going to take everyone's else's strength just to lift the cabinet. She took a deep breath and dried away her own tears, to wear the most genuine smile she could for Tina and Lee. "Hey you two. Guess what. All the shaking is over.. for now. And now we're going play a little game, okay?"
Tina: "Okay."
Lee: "What game?"
Thankfully, the cabinet was lifted high enough and she heard Dakota call out what she had already been thinking. "On it, Koda. Hear that? And see over there. That's a magic tunnel out of here. we're gonaa everyone through the magic tunnel. Tina first 'cuz she's closest, then Lee.Yep.. that's it! Yer doin' it Now crawl as as fast as you can!"
María talked and herded the two toddlers on out from under the lifted cabinet, and did not hesitate to crawl out after them fast as she could. Once the cabinet was let back down it was group hug time all around for the three girls in their pajamas and their two youngest charges. Something of a tearful reunoin as everyone was physically safe at least.
María looked tearfully Haley and Father, "Gracias."

Haley breathed a sigh of relief, not only for the people trapped under the cabinet who had managed to scrabble to safety, but, for the fact that she didn't have to hold the damn thing up any longer. She slowly worked to lower it gently in the hope that it would minimise the cacophony of tortured metal upon metal screeching from the debris knocked down and littering the floor after the quake shook the very foundations of the hangar. The girl's muscles still screamed at her from inside her arms as she took a moment to stretch, rolling her shoulders. "Yeah..." She started, slightly out of breath from the exertion. "... Not even heavy. Totally could have held that up all day. Totally."
She took a moment to look around again, her deep green eyes searching, scanning from the building's interior to its occupants, taking in everything she could as she tried to figure out in her head if the building was stable, how much of a threat the people in here were, what places would be best to set up fire zones should walkers or otherwise try anything or if worse came to worse, the quickest exits.
"Gracias."
The girl gave a little half smile and salute. "No problem. Hey, how come you guys are out here in PJs?" She asked, her hands instinctively resting near her now heavily scuffed rifle. "Guessing the quake woke you all up or something?"
Shauna Kelly: That helped, thank you

Luca Sultana: Really sad how this website went from being so active, with dozens and dozens of daily users, to a ghost town. We had so much fun here especially from like 2013-2018. What a fun few years. I probably won’t log in after this. Take care, everyone!
