Describe your character's life before the Apocalypse:
-Before the outbreak Neil was a normal man with normal ambitions. He didn't have much in the ways of worries. Neil owned a bar that was a pretty popular hang out among many people. Business was good and he himself would enjoy the occasional drink after a long night. He split his time between working in the back balancing the numbers, along with a number of other managerial task... And tending the bar himself serving customers.
Neil got used to the regular faces. He got used to hearing the same complaints. People would come in and sink their problems into a glass and he would listen with a smile as he absent mindedly wiped down the bar. Neil was a favorite. Everyone loved Neil when they came in for a drink. He was okay at pushing his own problems into a box and instead just become a good listener. That was before.
Neil had a small room above the bar. At the end of the night he would turn everything off. He would make his slow ascension up the stairs and crash on a bed. He usually found himself watching cheers reruns on an old tv with a bottle of beer in his hand until he eventually passed out. He never knew much about his family, never missed them either. Neil grew up in an orphanage until he turned eighteen and left. He worked hard until he had the money to open his bar and didn't mind the loneliness. He was kind of a loner anyways.
What happened to your character on Outbreak Day?:
-After a particularly rowdy night Neil was exhausted. He had to break up a fight the night before and closing time could have come soon enough. Neil was still asleep when he heard a crash downstairs. Someone had broken into his bar. He grabbed a baseball bat from beside his bed and went downstairs to check on the commotion.
What he didn't expect to find was a woman and her frightened daughter huddled in a back booth staring anxiously at the window. "What the hell is going on?!?!?" He asked. He was more confused than angry. He looked at the broken shards of window on the floor by the front entrance. He would never forget the look she gave him. It silenced him and chilled him all at the same time. His eyes moved back outside when he heard a crash. People were running down the street screaming.
Neil quietly wondered if he was drunk. Taking several long strides across the room he saw there was a car on fire outside and that was the most normal thing he saw. He saw people huddled around a body on the ground.... Eating it. Neil couldn't pull his eyes away from the sight. Without turning away from the bloody horror in front of him he repeated his question. "What the hell is going on?" This was only the beginning.
Describe your character's life after the Apocalypse:
-Neil could have boarded up his bar. He could have rode out the apocalypse behind heavy doors and been okay. He didn't however. Neil left the bar with Monica and her teenage daughter Amy. For awhile they got along. They survived. They scavenged. They avoided large groups because people had gone crazy. It wasn't just the dead that wanted to kill you. People were far more dangerous. For the first time in his life he found what it was like to care about people. More than just silly surface stuff, but really care. He wasn't a romantic. He didn't ask Monica to marry him, but they did become an item. They fell in with each other when things got lonely.
Neil even became some what of a father figure to Asly. Apparently her father hadn't been in the picture since she was born. They found an old house and held up there. Neil would go out on supply runs and tell them to keep the place locked. He would tell them not to open the door for anyone but him. It was working. The world was screwed up, but they were happy at least. Who would have thought that it would have taken the end of the world to bring actual happiness in his life. It wasn't just living isolated like he was before. He had real human connection.
One day, when coming back from a supply run, Neil found Monica in the floor dead. There was a trail of blood that covered the dirty hardwood floors. Not far from her body was a heavy candlestick that had been used to bash her head in. All of their food, and supplies were gone. Neil was devastated. Upon seeing the body he quickly searched for Ashly. He was sure he was going to find her body in another room. He didn't. He found her hiding in the basement. Monica told her to hide. Monica saved her life, by giving up hers. Neil couldn't help but feel responsible and he hugged Ashly close. They spent the night in the basement. Neither one of them had the heart to go back up and face Monica's body again.
It was 3 years later before Ashly died. Neil had a whole year of the perfect family wrapped in the rotting backdrop of the apocalypse. Sadly Ashly too was taken from him by the dead. Neil shut down for awhile after that. He found it hard to care about anyone. He didn't let anyone close. Neil essentially became a shell. He may not be the same man he once was, but he's trying to get by... As best as he can.
