"Well at the speed we're going we will be done before lunch," Amber said following him out. "Louis can drive it, just no or besides Pete knew how to operate the crane part." She walked out to where it was, the Flat beds beside the water tanks ready to be put on.
"You can drive your night. The way I see it is You in your night, Max in a transport, Me in the Humvee. Becky in her Corvette. Brian in the other transport, and Louis in the crane. We also have an SUV that if Abby is willing to drive she can. I know that after what happened she may want to be with Max. In that case Sam could drive the SUV. If not he had a small car he'll take."
She leaned back on her heels. The crane was empty, Louis having moved on to pack more of the food. "It's unlocked. You're free to give it a shot. The water bins are heavy but I can secure the straps when you lift it and place it on. We'll have one on each flat bed and then move the cots on behind them."
She waited for Charles to clime up, "ready when you are," she said stepping back. "Would be nice to have a few more hands at packing up, but we got this."
Out of the corner of her eye she could see Sam loading some cars into the trandports, about two in each with the help of mechanical lifts. They would need the crane to move it but that's what tey were there for. After the cars were in they'd pack it full of supplies.
Abby stared at Louis from behind Max. She felt Max lead her over to a table and pull her down into his lap. She sat, it was more like she was going through the motions and not really there. She was going over things in her mind. She stared at the bowls Louis brought them, and glanced at Max. She shook her head. She didn't know if she would be able to swallow it. Her eyes glanced at Louis, and she spoke slowly, "Is there water?' she frowned hearing her voice. She hoped it would start sounding normal soon. Each swallow pained her, but she didn't show it. She looked at the food and then at Max. She leaned her head against him. She worried she was hurting him, but she didn't want to move. Right now he was the only thing that was keeping her from hiding away from everyone and every thing. He told her that it was ok, she had done what she had to do, if that was true, why did she feel so wrong?

Max winced slightly when Abby leaned on him. He tryed to cover it up with a simples kiss to her head. His hand rested on her thigh, squeezing it to ease her. He could tell she was scared and held her closer. "It's alright I'm here," he whispered gently. "Everything's alight."
He watche Louis disapear and come back with two bottle of water. "I should probably get back to work. Think we're leaving soon. Almos packed up," he smiled and clapped his hands together, "I'll let you two be." He turned and left the mess hall, off to find Becky and Brian.
Max watched the man leave and moved one hand away from abby. He took the spoon in the bowl and took a bite. "Want some," he asked smiling. He reached for the bottle of water. Uncapping it he held it up to her lips and smiled.
Charles climbed on up and looked at the controls. They were luckily marked or else he would never have even known where to begin. There was even a small intrusion manual that had been taped to the dash. He fired it up and went through the steps. When he got it up he tried to lower the hook to grab the water but it was absolutely insane. It took him at least ten tries before he got it and a couple more before he was able to get it onto the damned thing on the flatbed. He cursed under his breath but finally got it. It wasn't the neatest lineup but it would work.
"Harder then it looks. Guess I understand why you are supposed to be certified for this."
He laughed and then got right back to it. Loading the other one up in half the time. He lowered the crane back into it's driving position and jumped down.
"Never thought I'd operate a crane. Before or after."

Amber watched him struggle with the controls and trying to pick up the water tanks. She helped where she could, mostly trying to guide him by yelling. She strapped it to the crane and then to the flatbed when he was done. She made sure the tanks were securely on tight ad smiled when she thought she did a good enough job.
She watched him climb out and smiled, "I can barely even move that. God what I'd kill to have an actual crane operator. Would make building that wall of your easier. Guess we'll just have to keep struggling at it," she said smiling, "you seemed to get the hang of it at the end. Wouldn't be surprised if you mastered it by the end of the wall. Who knows maybe that builder of yours can work it." She stepped back and looked at the tanks. Lifting the fuel drums, with the help of charles, she tied them behind the water tanks. "Want to swing the Knight around pull the first trailer. I'll get the Humvee up after it."
-----
After a little more work they were finally done. It was just before noon, the sun high in the sky. They had worked fast and made good time. Amber had gathered everyone one out frot and was set in giving them orders. It was still her base and until she got to the farm she was in charge.
The supplies was fully packed and but she wanted to give it a once over to check. "Okay I'll list the vehicle, it's driver and the supplies its carrying. When it's good to go say check and I'll move on," she said holding the clipboard.
"Have the first transport with two cars," she said waiting for a yes from Brian. Once she heard it she walked to the next vehicle.
"Have the second trnaoosrt with two more cars," she said waiting for Max's response, "Abby will ride with you. I assume she doesn't want to be alone." Once heard the okay she went to the next vehicle.
"Becky's corvette loaded with med bay equipment," she said lookig at it.
"Check," Becky said leaning on the hood.
"Humvee loaded with Ammo and Food. Pulling a water tank and the cots," she said looking at her vehicle. "Looks good, let's move on."
She walked up to the SUV. "Sam and Arthur. You're in this one. It's filled with our clothes, any othe odds and ends and more food."
"Right loaded up fully," Sam said smiling.
Finally she walked up to the Knight, "fully loaded with the guns, more med bay equipment. Pulling a water tank, the fuel, and the med bay stretchers."
Once she heard the okay from Charles she put te clipboard away. "Louis is in the Crane. It will be driven as follows. The Knight. Followed by Transport Alpha, followed by Transport Beta, followed by the SUV, then the Crane, my Humvee, and the Corvette taking up the rear." She cleared her throat, "is that all clear."
"Clear," he men, with the exception of Arthur, said in unison. She looked at Max and Charles, "tha sit allright with you boys?"
Charles listened as Amber called the ball. She certainly was good at doing the commander thing. He smiled to himself in the drivers seat of the Knight. She's going to a huge asset to the farm, he thought. She would probably even push him back into the role a little more. With her reminding him by example what it was to lead people. With Sarah it all came so naturally. They had formed a tight bond and had been alone all of this time. It had improved their teamwork to a sharp edge, but now he would have to lead others again. People who didn't know him well enough to predict his actions and needs before he ever spoke.
"Ready to get the hell home," he said over the walkie.
He couldn't believe how good it felt to have communication like that. He had grown so accustomed to having to rely on face to face conversation for so long that the simple convenience of having mobile comms felt like an I'm manse luxury.
"Only thing we stop for is if we see people. Fair enough Amber?"
He wanted to let the others hear him deferring in some things to Amber. Not enough to question his commands but enough to make sure they knew that her voice was important. She would be like this groups representative. The person who could make sure that their concerns and needs were heard.

Max climbed into the truck loaded with cars. He waited for Abby to slide in before he started it up. "We're going home allstar," he said taking her hand, "felt like we were gone for weeks. Will be good to sit back, have a home base. Share a bed," he said winking at the last part.
He saw Chalres begin to pull out, then Brian. After Brisn starte up, following behind the other transport. He wasn't used to driving such a long vehicle, but he could manage.
Hearing Charled over the radio he smiled, "let's work on getting home first Pres," he said laughing.
Max heard Amber give the go ahead from the radio, agreeing with that if they found people they would stop.
Max gripped style wheel tighter as the convoy set off down the road. From the side mirrors he could see the base slowly disapearung. Soon they would be home.
