He watched and he tilted his head to the side, shakin' that head when Bernard posed the question about her being able to talk. "Don't know, but if she can't? Where's she been all my life?" Asking aloud towards Bernard with a grin across his lips. Smart ass, he was! A woman that couldn't talk was ideal, or so he'd tell everyone. He just ... lifted his off hand, his left hand, and sunk it into his pocket as he watched the fellow to his sizde approach the girl and offer out his hand.. It was interesting, to see how Bernard handled it. It was awkward, but the guy got his point across. "Well, s'pretty straightforward way of inviting someone. Had poetry to it, B."
Pooch on the other hand responded well in general. He liked people, even if he was a bit dopey, maybe even a bit addle-brained. He didn't like walkers, but people? The dog loved'em. Hell, look who it took to? Mick wasn't exactly the epitome of cuddly. "B's right, ma'am." To the woman. "We've got sights set on Fort Devens. There's supplies there." He ... saw that she was scribbling down something, writing something, and he just cut a look to Bernard, waiting. Hey, he was closest to her!
As the black man approached her, Michelle lifted her hand, the one with the pencil. She gestured to her ear and shook her head. Her eyes stared at them intently. She held up her hand, as if asking for a moment. She saw Bernard talking to her, but if she truly reading just his lips, he would have been talking to fast for her to understand. In truth she heard every word they spoke. Mick's comment about her not speaking made her want to tell him off. He was a smartass.
Michelle looked at Bernard's hand and pointed at the tablet. She started writing ,and held it out to him when she was done. <hello, my name is Michelle I am deaf but can read your lips if you slow down and face me when you talk to me,i can sign > She looked at both men and waited for Bernard to explain to Mick. She chewed on her bottom lip. Maybe this was a bad idea. She gripped her pencil and had to resist the urge to snatch the tablet and run. Her blue eyes drifted back and forth between them.
The woman began writing something down on a tablet. He wondered what she was going to put and why she was doing it, although he could take a pretty good guess. As she writ something down, Bernard awkwardly put his hand down as she didn't shake it. The woman finally revealed what was on the tablet. Her name was Michelle and she was deaf? Well, he could work with that. He looked over at Mick with nod, confirming his idea earlier that she didn't talk. "Yeah, she doesn't talk".
When Mick mentioned them going for Fort Devens, he gave a nod in agreement. "Yeah, it'd be great to have someone else there for backup" he said with a friendly grin.
The way she chewed on her bottom lip, the way she watched them. It wasn't forced, at least it didn't look forced, not to him. A look was given to Bernard, and then back to the woman and he just nodded to her as if to signal his approval. He just waved his hand to get attention, to make sure she was paying it before he pointed to his mouth. "We're, going, to, Fort, Devens." He paused, but he didn't draw out the words, he just waited after saying each one so she got what he said. He didn't know what the note said, but he could guess. The fact she was nervous told him a lot, or the fact that he thought she was. Why wouldn't a woman be nervous approaching two men? He would be in her shoes, to be sure. He reached up and pulled his badge from the necklace he wore, showing her that he was a cop, or that he used to be. "We can find supplies there." A bit more quickly spoken, but not too quickly. "I have a car. Do you want to come with us?"
Mick wasn't sure when he became responsible for these two, or why, but it appeared that he was just that. An apparently deaf woman and a kid. Sure, he was old enough to be considered an adult, but he was a kid to Mick. It seemed like he was just picking up people left and right, didn't he? He'd wait for her response, her answer. "Do you got a name?" Since Bernard didn't tell him any of that, other than the woman didn't talk! He.. Well, she still had the tablet up, didn't she? He leaned forward, to read it, squinting. "Michelle? Michelle. Got it. Sorry." Before leaning back, just a bit and cutting a look to Bernard. Pooch's bark in the distance, a few cars up, had him looking ahead, a walker was trapped under a car that was slightly off the road, clawing at the dog feebly, unable to get to it. Mick just looked back to Michelle, waiting. He'd handle the walker later, or Bernard would. It wasn't a problem for now.
Michelle watched Bernard, and moved her head a bit as he turned from her, speaking to Mick. She glanced at Mick, then frowned. He obviously did not want her to know what he was saying. Her ears heard it plain enough. Asshole, he could have introduced her.
She saw Mick wave his hand, and looked at his face. She smiled, as he spoke. It was slow enough that she could have read his lips without using her ears. When he mentioned the Fort , she glanced it it's direction. His hand dipped into his shirt, and pulled out a badge on a necklace. Her eyes widened as she saw it, but she never opened her mouth. Eyes went back to his lips. They wanted her to go with them. Michelle looked at both of them, and Mick asked about her name. She held the tablet up for him, and pointed at it. She frowned at Bernard, and gave him a look.
Mick said her name, and she held her hand up. She started moving her fingers on her right hand, then realized neither of them knew what the hell she was saying. She frowned and started writing on the tablet quickly. <"Sure? I can't hear, might be liability, slow you down."> She handed the tablet to Mick. She saw him glance to the dog and followed his eyes. She could hear the barking, but had been ignoring it. Her hand reached out and gripped Bernard and she pointed at the dog, and signed <dangerous>. Michelle pointed at Bernard and then the dog again. Seeing he wasn't getting it, she picked up her hiking stick and walked over to the dog. She saw the walker's head and arm reaching out from under the car. Without a moment's hesitation, she lifted the stick and slammed it down, through the dead's head. It stopped moving and she glanced back at the two males. She pointed towards the Fort, and shrugged.
Bernard listened as Mick talked to the woman. Although, it all drifted off in the distance when his eyes hit Fort Devens. He could see the Fort and, damn, it looked like it really held some valuable supplies in there. The man couldn't wait to get inside and get stuff that could really be useful to their survival. He also thought about what would happen after they took the fort. Mick mentioned possibly letting him in the car, but now Michelle was here, that might of changed. He could have less or more of a chance of grouping up with him for permanent. Bernard shrugged and looked back at the two.
The deaf woman had gripped Bernard and pointed at the dog my writing dangerous on her tablet. What? What the hell was she trying to say? She then approached the dog and drove her hiking stick through the biter's brain, then shrugging and pointing to the fort. Well, atleast she was capable of handling herself, it sure took some weight off Bernard's shoulders. He then nodded in agreement of heading to the fort. "Fort Devens, here we come".
So. Well, it seemed to be settled. Seemed that the trio was starting to become something of an actual group, didn't it? He was strolling up beside Bernard then, finally pulling his canteen from his pack. He took a sip from it in mid stride before offering it out towards the young man. "Make sure she gets a swig from it too, Kid. Last thing we need to do is pass out from Dehydration out here. We've got work ahead of us. "... They could see the fort just fine as they closed in, but they could also see the walkers milling around, ambling about. That was going to be trouble, and bad trouble at that. Mick didn't really know just what the hell he was going to do. There was a fence, there were vehicles. He scratched his jaw as they walked.. The girl could handle herself, he saw that when she picked up on what Pooch said and offered the walker. Bernard had proven capable.
Maybe, just maybe, they had a shot at this. "..Okay, Kid." To Bernard, as he looked him over. "..We need a way to get most of them out. Easiest way to do that is pop the gates, make a fuckton of noise to draw'em over, and get back in there. .. Which is honestly easier said than done. That'll just clear the walkers inside." Which, admittedly, there were a few dozen on the yard ambling around, and those were just the ones that they could see. He could only imagine how many there were on the inside, in the various buildings. "The problem is, we gotta think of a way to cause enough noise to draw'em out. Not a gunshot either. Ammo's too important." And he honestly didn't have enough of it. He paused, before speeding up, just enough to tap the girl on her arm, to get her attention. "You got bolt cutters on you? Something to cut metal with?" Slow, but not too slow. Just slow enough for her to read his lips.
The man was obviously brainstorming, trying to get a plan together between the three of them. Pooch had quieted down at least, seeing what lay beyond and in that fence..
Michelle heard them talking but more or less tuned them out. She flinched when he touched her arm. She drew back from him at first, and stared at his face. Bolt cutters? She looked at the fence and the cars , and grinned at him.
Michelle pointed to the vehicles and then the gate and took out her notebook. <can wr yank the gate with a car?> she held the tablet out to him, then waved her hand to get his attention . She pointed at the dog and flapped her hand like making fun of someone talking too much. She glanced at Bernard, hoping he would get it. Put the dog in the car, let it draw them with his barking. She frowned and took the tablet back and started scribbling. <dog barking draws attention thefollow car>. Michelle held it up and pointed at herself and motioned her hands like driving.
The three stood there coming up with some sort of plan to loot the fort. After clearing it of all supplies and most likely, biters, would they stay there? It was a fort afterall it probably had good equipment and defences there, it could be held easily. But that was something for the future and not to worry himself about now. Bernard looked at Mick who offered him a drink from his canteen. He took it from the man's hands with a smile. "Thanks, Mick". He took a big swig of it and handed it over to Michelle. He used his hand to wipe all of the water that had dripped from his mouth. Damn, that was refreshing, all he needed was a little bit of food.
Michelle had asked if they could use a vehicle to yank open the gate in response to Mick asking if anyone had bolt cutters. Hell, it wasn't a bad idea, but Bernard still looked at Mick, expecting him to give an answer. Michelle then pointed out that if Pooch was in the car, it would draw biters. Bernard was a bit unsure now, the biters close to them or even Pooch could be risky, they may get more of them than expected. Bernard gave another glance at Mick and shrugged. "It's your call, man".
...He tilted his head to the side as he watched Michelle. What she asked made sense, and he looked out towards the gate. Could he get his car that close? Maybe, but there was the problem with the car possibly getting stuck. He rubbed at his stubbled jaw before looking between them. "That's not the issue." Making sure he was angled so Michelle could read his lips. "We yank the gates open? Then how do we close them? They're sort of useless after." Came that slow shake of his head as he thought about it for a moment, pulling out his Sigarms GSR 1911 .45 from its holster. The damned semiautomatic hand cannon rested in his hand for a moment as he seemed to consider things for a moment. He had a fair amount of ammo, true. Enough to definitely get their attentions, to draw them close if he needed to. The problem was, getting away from the bastards, and the sound was only going to draw more.
Michelle still had a pretty decent idea though, even as he looked his pistol over. "...Alright." Spoken as he finally looked up between them. "I'll get my car, drive it forward, we'll give a jump to a few different cars, give'em jumps to their batteries, bust out the windows, crank up the volume, play some music. I'm sure half of these things have CDs in them. It won't carry as far as a gunshot." With that, he nodded to Michelle. She'd inspired the idea at least, with hers.. He glanced over to Bernard. "That gate's gonna be locked, I can just about promise you. Either use your crowbar, or your gun. Get it open, draw attention towards it, get the fuck out of there." ..Brainstorming now as he worked through the plan of attack, he glanced to Michelle now. "Do you have a gun?" He wasn't keen on giving her one, but.. Well, the plan had to have contingencies, had to have back ups. He needed someone to make sure, absolutely, that the gate remained clear once the zeds were running to the noise.
Michelle stared at him, and read his lips, or gave the impression that she was. Her eyes glanced to Bernard when he was through, gauging his reaction to this plan.
Hell yea , the gate was gonna be locked. She frowned , and shook her head when he asked about the gun. She held up her hands and shook them a little bit, meaning she didn't want one. She held up her hand, and pointed at herself. She sniffed her clothes and made a face. Then she started to move, slow and ambling , just a little walk, around them. She was showing them how she had managed to move around for so long. She wasn't sure if this was a good idea or not.She should have just took off and left them alone, but they were the first living people she had seen in awhile.
She pulled her tablet out of her pocket, <I walk right through them, they don't notice me, and we could put the car against gates to keep them shut.> She stared at Mick as she handed him the tablet. She looked at Bernard, and smiled sheepishly.

Bernard's mouth stayed shut throughout the majority of talking. He was listener and a learner, that's for sure. The plan was to use the cars' music to draw the biters. It was a decent plan that Bernard was willing to do, his role would be to open the gate and a draw attention towards it. There was a chance he might get caught by one of the biters, but he would do pretty much anything at this point for the supplies. He nodded to Mick in agreement of his job. "Yeah, I can do that".
Michelle didn't have a gun as she responded to Mick. Instead, she was doing strange walking movements that Bernard still didn't get. "Just uhh... Write it down" he said with soft smile. And so she did, handing the tablet to Mick. He got closer to Mick and read what was on the tablet, she could walk right through them? Turning back to Michelle, he was greeted by a sheepish grin, to which he aslo have a grin. "Walk right through them?" he glanced over to Mick for a second with a confused face, then turned back to Michelle. "Why don't they notice you?".
He just... His face mimicked Bernard's for a moment as he watched the girl pantomime being a Zed before his brows just lifted in understanding before looking back, and then looking to Bernard for a moment.. He took that offered tablet and read it over, his eyes scanning the words. Huh. "There's gonna be clothes in the facility. In the barracks." Spoken as he glanced down to some of the Zeds he killed before looking over to Bernard, and then to Michelle, his brows furrowing in thought. Would that work? It seemed to work for her. It made sense in theory, right? Mick just gave a heavy sigh and shoved his empty ALICE bag off of his shoulder and put it on the hood of a nearby car. "Okay, here's the thing. If it works, if this is legit. Then.. Well. Fuck, we could get those cars started, break the gates, get our supplies, get the hell out in fresh clothes, and haul ass to somewhere else." With a tilt of his head to the side, he looked between Bernard and Michelle.
"Well, fuck. We zombie up, we open the gates, we amble back, jumpstart those cars to blast music, then we get the car, get in the gates, get our shit, and then we tear out of here." He'd been thinking on clearing it honestly, but that was a pipe dream, crazy talk. Even if they could more people'd come along. There were just three of them. "Fuel, food and water, clothes, weapons. Probably something about our hygiene after wouldn't hurt." With that... He just looked to Pooch.
Michelle kept frowning. He kept turning away from her and looking at Bernard, as he spoke. She was going to have to teach him to make sure she was able to see his lips. She could hear him just fine, but she didn't want him or anyone else to know that. She was comfortable with things like they were.
She shook her head and her hands started flying. Hand and fingers going quickly as she signed at them. She made a noise,a sound, nothing close to words,to show her frustration. Seeing that they didn't understand she reached up and grabbed Mick's cheeks and did the same to Bernard. She made them both face her and then mouthed the words (face me when you talk) she smiled. Michelle looked at Mick and let go of them both. She held her hand out for the tablet and wrote<i got every other word> she pointed at the dead, then moved over and smeared her hands with its blood and wiped it on her pant legs. Her head lifted and she looked at Mick, raising an eyebrow as if asking why they weren't doing it.
Their planning seemed to be coming to an end, but it still needed at little work. Whether it would work or not would be seen later on. Bernard knew his part of it and waited for any other instructions. When Mick mentioned clothes in the barracks, it seemed what they would do next was clear. Michelle had mentioned being able to go through the biters without being noticed. And the only way to probably do that is to look and smell like one. Mick finally came out with 'zombying up' which was pretty self explanatory. They would cover themselves in biter guts and walk on through. "Well... If it works, I'm up for it" he said with a reassuring smile.
Michelle had grabbed Bernard's and Mick's cheek, making the two face her. Oh right, she was deaf, could only read lips. As she let go a little smile appeared on his face. "Sorry, I'll turn towards you from now on". The woman moved over to a biter and smeared it's guts on herself, so Bernard would do the same. He went over to the biter he had killed while protecting Pooch. He used the claw of his crowbar and slammed it into the biger's stomach, opening it up. He put away his crowbar and got its blood and guts, smearing it all over himself. He returned to the others, with slightly disgusted smile. "Okay, I'm ready".
His brows furrowed even deeper when she grabbed his face! Eh, if the man hadn't grown up with an angry sister, he might've been taken aback, but instead? Eh, he just grinned and nodded sheepishly. "Alright, alright. Facing you, got it." In damn near unsion with Bernard before... frowning. Well, he wasn't crazy about this idea, about smearing himself with walker guts, but.. Heh. "Fuck it." He was takin' that leather jacket off of him though, and folding it up before he moved about callin' Pooch to him. "I'll be back with the car, you two wait here." With a nod to them as he called the dog again, walkin' alongside it as Pooch just yipped away, following at Mick's feet.
Ten minutes might have passed, and that Charger was creeping along, careful not to make noise though.. Honestly, him making noise in the old muscle car was inevitable, couldn't be helped really. He was eaaasin' by them, pulling the car up before popping the door and getting out, holding his jumper cables in hand. "...B, go ahead and get down there, open the gate and kind of hang tight. I'll start up makin' noise with the cars and idle down there." Making sure Michelle could read his lips, he nodded over towards her. "Watch his back." He was nodding her way again before he went about opening the door to the SUV, so he could pop the hood and get ready on his end.
Michelle frowned as she moved over to Bernard and actually sniffed him. She held up her hand( wait a minute) . She didn't hesitate, got down on her knees and dug her hands in. She pulled out intestines and gunk amd started smearing it all over the back of Bernard. She plopped it in his hands and turned around, motioning with her hand for him to do her back. With her blood smeared hands, she ran up her neck and matted her hair with the ooze. Once done she turned to face them,as if to say like this. She moved and picked up her hiking stick and pulled a knife out of her pack. Blue eyes peered out of what looked like a massacered face. Bits stuck to her cheeks and she grinned like the Chessire cat from Alice and Wonderland. She locked those blue hues on Mick and nodded. She pointed to herself and the newly remodeled Bernard and then to Mick. She held her hand to her nose. They would smell him for sure if he stayed like that. She handed him herpack and then turned. She started off towards the gate.
Michelle moved slow and ambled, turning her body a bit. The closer she got to the gate, it looked like her plan worked. The beasts behind it didn't pay her one lick of attention.
Bernard saw Michelle when he returned to the others. She was putting her hands into the biter again, taking out guts and gunk from it. She put some onto Bernard's back, ah, he almost forgot about putting there. The guts and blood on him made him gag after smelling it, it was one of the worst smells he had ever smelt, but he had to go through it to loot the fort. He had never actually seen anyone cover themselves in guts and go through walkers, he only hoped Michelle had done it and was right about it.
When Michelle was done, she placed the guts in Bernard's hands, expecting him to put some on her back. He smeared what he had in his hands onto Michelle's back, it sludged and squelched as it touched her back. When he was done, he used what was left spare in his hands to put on his arms, legs, neck and face. Mick had told him to get down to the gate and open it, to which he nodded. "Got it, I'll head there now".
He slowly made his way to the get, realising that the biters didn't pay attention to him. Well, the plan seemed to have worked for now, but who knows what could happen if they made a small mistake. He arrived at the gate he was supposed to open. He either supposed to use his crowbar or gun to open it. He intended to use the gun so he could get used to it, either way he opened it, it was bound to make noise and probably give him away. It would be hard to 'hang tight' though. He unholstered his gun and aimed it at the lock. "Well, here goes nothing". He pulled the trigger and shot the lock, breaking it. Now all he had to do for now was hang tight.
Mick looked up right as he heard the gunshot, still slightly under the hood, having just started to connect the jumper cables to the SUV, he squinted for a moment. "Why's he fucking shooting? I told him to use the... " He scowled, and scowled deeply before he just cranked up the car. He couldn't quite get the engine to turn over, but he got the damn thing on. He thrusted a CD nearby into the player and turned the volume on high before rolling down all the windows, each and every one, front and back. He let it idle, only to detach the jumper cables, and get to the next car, making the process much quicker. He didn't have a choice after all, Bernard sort of upped the timeline when he fired that gun shot. The next car, a sedan, was started up in the same way, revving it up just a few times to get the juices flowing, and then opening up the windows. He went about taking up the jumper cables, closing the hood before doing the same to his car. He moved quick, but he also moved damn diligently.
The next park was the tricky part. The next part, he was putting in the CDs from the cars, into the players and cranking them up. One? Was Rob Zombie beltin' out Dragula as loudly as the speakers'd let it go. Next? The SUV? Enter Sandman, by Metallica. The two mixing created a loud duet.. Which only got louder when Mix took the tire iron from the back and smashed out the windshields, breaking up the glass. Yeah, he was causing one hell of a racket, even as he moved from there, and moved back to his car, intent on driving away from the source of the noise, getting on the other side as he tried to coast the car on, going slow, going damn slow..
He watched from the windshield as the zeds moved towards the shot open gate, ambling forward, a few pressed to the fenceline, staying there until one walker moved through the open gate, and the rest started to follow suite.. Slowly, but surely, all but ignoring the two humans who smelled like them, who looked like them.. Even with Bernard's gunshot, they hadn't paid them too much mind.
Shauna Kelly: That helped, thank you
