The world today is a scary place. Even more so when everything is so much bigger than you. The sun had just started to set in the California sky, blushing the clear blue with a subtle a tint of orange as it cast its evening shadows upon weed choked fields and wooden fences, long since in a state of disrepair. A cool breeze blew through the thick, long grasses rippling them aside in its wake as though they were a wave upon an ocean of green.
It had been a week, a whole seven days, since Haley had any contact with her former group members. They were scattered just like dust in the breeze on this lonesome path in the middle of the Californian countryside. The young girl looked around. It seemed safe enough here for now. If the world hadn't have gone to hell most would consider this very much a pleasant evening. She stopped for a moment atop a hill, trying to use the elevated ground as a vantage point. Kate, Frank, Paul, they must all be around here somewhere. They simply must be!
The only thing in sight from the hilltop apart from the countryside rolling off into the distance was a classic red barn, contrasting against the endless overgrown meadows. The sun was setting ever further in the skies above, the orange tint starting to turn into a deep amber blush as it continued its journey across the heavens. She took out a pair of sunglasses from her bag, looking at her reflection in the dark lens. Yep, she still looked like she walked out of a warzone what with her head still bandaged, messy hair and red "Rambo" headband bandanna thing on halfway covering the aforementioned bandage.
She put the shades on, with the sun being so low in the sky glare was starting to become somewhat of an issue and headed towards the barn. Perhaps her former group members had holed up in there? It seemed to be a fairly solid shelter after all. She begun the short walk down, soon approaching the structure. Up this close, the barn did not look in as nearly as good a condition as it did from further away, the timbers visibly rotting and the rust red paint peeling away. Despite all this though, it might just do as a shelter for the night. Haley pulled out her pistol, just to be sure. Never know when there could be a walker around the next corner looking to take a bite out of you.
She started to notice more and more bad signs as she made her way around the building. Its windows had long since been boarded up, and the door itself was wrapped in chains held together rather flimsily by a rusted screwdriver. By far the worst sign though, was the hastily painted sign upon the door itself.
DON'T OPEN. DEAD INSIDE.
Turns out this was -not- a safe spot to take shelter for the night. Nonetheless, curiosity got the better of her as she peeked through a gap in the door. Nothing. It was too dark in there to see but the stench of death and rot? That was certainly not hard to detect. She screwed up her face in disgust for a moment and begun to walk away, but as she did, there was a loud crash and a clank from inside the building as something heavy fell down. The girl flinched, jumping back and aiming her weapon at the door. Nothing. It was silent once again apart from the chirping of a few crickets.
She gave a sigh of relief, and turned her back on the building starting to walk away to find a better spot to rest for the evening but as she did, there was another crash and a creak. The door had just given way!The smell is revolting, rotted meat covered in manure and rotted hay! Their white rotten eyes searching until they spotted the girl, moaning, their black mouths of rotten teeth gaping as they stumbled slowly towards her. They were stiff, slow, it had been a while since they had the space to move around but nonetheless they were sure as heck hungry.
"Ah shit!" Haley snapped off a shot at the first walker, nailing the foul creature through the eye and sending a spurt of foul, almost black gore out of the back of its skull as it crumpled to the ground. There were still more of them though, plenty more, it seemed the barn was full of the damned things. The girl quickly sprinted away as fast as her legs could carry her, the walkers shambling behind after her.
There was another creak and groan from the building, before it gave one more deafening crash, its rotten timbers finally giving way bringing the structure down upon the remaining zombies inside. There were still two walkers firmly locked on Haley though. The things were slow though, clumsily trying to reach out and grab her as she tried to flee the scene.
