The loud crack of thunder woke Lin-Lin up from her sleep. Slowly opening her eyes, she was looking at the window. It was a heavy down pour of rain coming down. Groaning to herself, she was dead tired. She had just gotten in not even two hours ago from a shift on Guard Duty. Her body wanted her to go back to sleep. But with the storm raging on outside, it would make it near impossible for it to happen. Pushing herself off the bed, she sat up on her knees and watched as the rain just kept on it's down pour outside. "It's going to flood most likely if this Rain keeps up the way it is. Might as well get up and help out there. Why can't I get a break? *sighs to herself* Well, time for some coffee." Moving her left leg, her bare foot touched the hard wooden floor surface. Standing up, she was in her white tank top and her black shorts. Yawning a bit, she stretched her arms up and over her head as she walked out of her bedroom and out into the small hallway that connected into the living room. Walking in the living room, she crossed through it and went into the kitchen which was on the right side of it. As she walked in, she saw a folded piece of paper right beside the coffee maker. Raising an Eyebrow, she lifted it up and pushed the button on the maker which started it right up. The coffee makers began to heat up and started to do it's magic of having the hot water go through the coffee grounds and into the small pot. Hopping up onto the counter, she unfolded the paper and read it out loud to herself.
"Lin-Lin,
I wanted to thank you for the other night on patrol. You let me open up and vent to you about my situation about my husband and his drinking habits. It was nice of you to do so and felt great for me to finally open up and tell someone about how he treats me and the kids. Also wanted to thank you for allowing me and the kids to crash at your house. You've made us feel safe us. But I wanted to apologize about how Howard came over drunk to your front door. Yeah I know you handled it and literally put your boot up his ass, which was funny to watch him cry after you man handled him the way you did. But he shouldn't have treated you the way he did, after all you have done for the community and keeping us all together. I am glad I have a friend like you and if there is anything you ever need or want, let me know. I'm just a shout away.
Sincerely,
Monica "Eve" Freeman"
Monica, or also called Eve was a civilian who was a nurse for the community and volunteers for guard duty from her abusive husband. She married her high school sweetheart who was a construction worker and a monster when he drinks. They had two kids together, they were now 7 and 8 years of age. Smiling to herself, she remembered that day. It was three days ago when she came to Lindsay for a talk while out on patrol around the community Fence. The 5'5" Latino Hawaiian mixed, 30 year old Eve looked tired and had a bruise settling around her cheek from being punched. It didn't take long for Eve to open up to her about the problems she was having at home. Over the years, Eve looked like she had aged badly with bags under her eyes from lack of sleep and the physical, mental and emotional abuse that she had endured. Lindsay felt bad for her and the kids. After they're shift, Lindsay walked her to her house with her assault rifle in hand. When Eve was stepping through the door way, Lindsay followed her inside the house and offered to have her and the kids to stay as long as she needed away from her husband. A beam of light came off of Eve as she was happy and had tears forming up in her eyes. The two women went into the kid's bedroom and gathered clothing that would last a week and some toys for them. With the luggage and children in tow, Lindsay led them to the gated fence that started halfway on the side of the house and wrapped around to the other side of the house. Opening the gate, she had them go into the back yard and then opened the unlocked back door, which she kept unlocked for if anyone needed a place to crash the night or needed to talk to her. It was her open door policy since she kept the front door locked most of the time. The little ones crashed in the guest bedroom since they were tired beyond belief. Lindsay had brought Eve to the master bedroom so that they could get some rest of they're own, is when they heard a pounding on the front door. Sighing to herself, Lindsay went to the front door and opened it. There stood the 6'7" Howard and the stench of booze was on his breath. Anger was burning into his soul and eyes as he looked down at the leader of the community. "Where's my wife at Dike? You bedding her like you do with other women of the community?!? You are nothing but a dirty, simple minded who-" He was insulting her, but she wasn't going to have any of it. He was cut off with a heavy fist to the side of his jaw which caused him to fall off her porch and into the front yard. With the hit, there was a popping sound that came from the jaw joint.
Stepping down from the porch as the man whaled out in pain and was thrashing the ground with his heavy meaty fists. Getting up onto his hands and knees, his rear end was pointed right for the angry Community leader. Seeing a perfect opportunity, she lined up his rear end with her like a soccer player. With her head tilted downwards, she ran to him and kicked him hard in the ass. Pain shot through him as he flew forward a few inches, landing on his stomach, he placed both his hands on his now badly hurt butt. Crying came out of him. Grabbing the shoulder mic on her right shoulder, she pushed in the button and speak into it. "Dan, Carlos, and Montana. Please come to my residence and pick up Howard from my front lawn. Make sure he gets medical attention and then put him in the brig. I don't want to even see a glimpse of him until he sobers the hell up. If I do, I'm putting a bullet in his head for insulting me and abusing Eve and the kids." She received a 10-4. Walking back up the porch, she stopped in the threshold and looked at him from the corner of her eye and said to him without turning her head. "You ever talk to me like that again and I will bed your wife. At least I know how to treat people like a human fucking being. I never once slept with her nor have I ever thought about it until today. You don't clean up your act Howard, and I will put a bullet in your brain and leave you in an unmarked grave in the jungle." With that, she slammed the front door after crossing it. Locking both the two two inch thick dead bolt locks and the main lock on the door knob, she went into the living room and sat in the recliner aimed at the front door. On her lap, she had the butt of her Colt M-4 assault rifle resting while aiming it at the ceiling. Her right hand rested on the handle and her index finger gently resting on the trigger. The tired Corporal sat and guarded her house until the three she radioed in came by with a Humvee and an Ambulance. They hauled him away, but she stayed up sitting there until everyone was up from they're sleep. When Monica woke up and had a cup of coffee, Lindsay had told her what had happened.
They stayed with her up until yesterday when they decided it was time to go back to they're own house. It was said that Howard hadn't touched a drop of Alcohol since the incident out front. Smiling at the note, she simply nodded her head and folded it back up, placing it back where it was. After the flash back, the coffee maker beeped a couple of times to show it was done brewing the dark brown coffee. Grabbing her mug, she poured in some sugar and a little bit of milk. Pouring in the contents, she stirred it with a spoon and drank a good portion of it. It was doing the job as it kicked her in the rear and woke her up fully. Taking the mug into her bedroom, she undressed herself a bit and slipped on her one piece swim suit and then dressed into her military fatigues. Sliding her feet into her boots, she tied them up tight again and stood up from her bed. Drinking the rest of her coffee, she grabbed her assault rifle from the corner of her bedroom and slung it around her. Walking back into the kitchen, she set the mug into her sink. Heading back into the living room, she grabbed her military hat she wore for rainy days such as today. Slipping it on, she unlocked the front door and stepped outside. Once she closed the door, she took her keys and locked every lock. Stuffing the keys into her pocket, she heard a humvee rolling up in front of her house. Inside was Carlos who was behind the wheel. "Hey boss, I kinda figured you would be up and moving. So I figured I'd pick you up so you didn't have to walk in this hell hole of a storm we are getting." Shaking her head, a smile came to her face. Walking to the passenger side, she climbed inside and slammed the steel door as she sat down in the seat. He put it into drive and they began they're drive. "Sit rep of how bad this storm is. What are we looking at so far?"
Carlos took a turn to head for the barracks. "Well, so far the streams and rivers are now starting to break the peak of the embankments and has begun to flood some of the lower land areas. Waves are crashing onto the beach and taking some of the sand back out to Sea. Me and the rest of the Goons have been busting out the sandbags and forming walls to try and keep the water back as much as we can. But with extra hands on deck, it'll make the process a little bit smoother. Generators are kicking on since we don't have the wonderful sun out today. So we are running on the batteries while the turbines have been spinning like crazy, producing as much power the Solar panels can't produce. So in all, another day at the office boss." Carlos Rarez, a 25 year old Private first class has been beside Lindsay since day one of them forming the Community. Originally born in Arizona, he joined the military after him and his family relocated to Hawaii. A good man with a few quirks here and there. Every now and then, they would find him at the Gate of the community smoking a jay or a bong, just getting high to kill some of the anxiety he has with the disorder. Opening the glove box, she took out the water proof map that sat inside of it folded. Looking over the map, she was looking at the different streams, rivers and creeks that surrounded the town. It was like a maze of the connecting waters. Some of they're Hydro plant Generators were located at the major rivers. So they had that to take care of since those dams wouldn't be able to take a whole lot of water all at one shot. "Well, we will be needing to open some of the release valves on the Dam's so that the Hydro Generators don't over load on us and cause more troubles for us." Opening his driver side window slightly, he took out a cigarette and lit it. The smoke plume filled the cab of the Humvee as they drove. "Yeah, we already started to open Valves, 1, 2 and 3 for the Plants Alpha and Gamma. I sent a team out to Bravo and Fox-Trot to open those Valves as well."
Raising her eyebrows in surprise, she just looked at the man. Smiling as she shook her head, she would say to him. "Then what's the point of having me come along then? Sounds like you have everything handled so far." Carlos would reply to her as his voice went from his cheery normal self, to one of dread. "Because we lost with Team four, who was sent to Plant Fox-Trot. They're last broadcast was that they were pulling up to the fenced in gate and that they saw it was open. I'm forming up the team to go and investigate what is going on out there near the edge of our community and the Jungle." Upon hearing that, a chill shot up her spine. That was news she didn't want to hear. With her Assault rifle ready, she slid back the receiver to feed in the round into the chamber. Lindsay was ready for action as they pulled up to the Barracks building. Dan and Montana were standing outside at the ready with they're gear in hands. Pilling into the military vehicle, they each exchanged a greeting to one another.
