It was hard to walk down the dirt roads without making a ruckus. Harder, yet, to walk through the woods and make any attempt at silence. Each booted and pawed step the pair made crunched the old dry leaves and seemed to almost echo through the trees.
But they were in familiar territory now. Each of them knew where they were and what they were getting close to. Even more promising was the lack of the reek that made them leave the area last year. With a lot more supplies than what they had now...
Uncharacteristic of the mastiff's usual calm demeanor - his ears pricked up and he started hopping and lolling his tongue out of the side of his mouth. He knew he was where he had grown up and could no longer contain himself. Miri's face cracked in to a glorious grin at the sight of the 200 lbs beast hopping around like a weaned pup. She chuckled quietly and watched him hop and bound and leap. He darted ahead of her, skidded to a stop, turned around and stuck his rear in the air with his chin to the leaf covered asphalt.
"If you think I'm gonna chase ya you're not right in the head." She laughed out loud. It felt good to hear the way her voice carried through the familiar woods.
The dog was wagging his butt in the air and waiting for her to get closer. Amber eyes almost bugging out and his muscles tensing under the coarse blue fur. He looked so wound up that he was liable to start flying to the moon at any second. Miri shook her head and was won over. She stopped and half-crouched quickly. Brutus jerked his head up but then resumed his position when he realized she wasn't making a run towards him. They stayed in this position for a lifetime before she charged the dog with a yelp. His mouth opened up in to a slobbery grin as he leaped up and ran ahead of her full bore towards home.
Home.
She could almost see it now. They were close. Just passed this bunch of mostly naked trees...
But she stopped.
Brutus had stopped in the clearing of trees that signified the driveway. He was no longer smiling but standing stone still and staring ahead silently.
"No.." Miri whimpered. She tried to run again to see what had happened. But for the first time in a very long time she lost the strength to do so. Her heart alighted in to a cold fire and her legs were shocked with icy electricity. She plopped to her knees and tried to catch her breath-but none came-just the cold hard squeezing in her chest.
The dog turned his head towards his master and slowly walked back up to her. His attitude had completely turned around. He was no longer playful. Silently he sat down in front of her and just stared at her with his silent yellow eyes.
Miri grabbed two fistfuls of her platinum curls and squeezed shut her eyes. She shook her head. If it was no longer there she couldn't look. There was no way she could walk the few yards it would take to see the ruin of her family home. What they had worked so hard to come back to.
It felt like years before she had the strength to stand back up. The dog also stood up and walked back towards where the house would be.
"Brute, no, man...I just can't." Her voice was broken.
For the first time since he was a puppy he ignored her and picked up his speed until he was trotting. Without realizing it soon Miri was running after him to try to keep up. What greeted her weary eyes when she got in to the driveway was her home still standing and no corpses occupying the area.
"Did I die?" She asked herself out loud. Walked up to the front door in a daze and opened it.
