Serena couldn’t believe how lucky they were. To stumble upon such a wonderful community and be welcomed inside…it was just wonderful. Chester had wanted to take a drive, get a look at the island. But Serena was content to stay in their new home and arrange the furniture as she saw fit. She was working in the basement. Scooting a few of the chairs to open it up a little more. She had even ventured outside to grab a couple flowers for the vase that sat on the coffee table. It was all so perfect….it was hard not to expect something to come along and ruin it.
But she was trying to be optimistic. Maybe this was their chance, their shot at a safe and stable life. She was just not going to think about all the possibilities. She was just going to enjoy this moment in time when her and her husband were safe. It was a little unsettling having Chester drive away without her. What if something happened to him? This place was supposed to be safe…..but it wouldn’t be the first time she had heard that song and dance. The air was starting to cool down outside as evening came and Serena but her hair into a high knot to keep it off her neck. She fanned the sweaty skin and continued with her fiddling.
Eventually the basement was to her liking and Serena made her way back upstairs before she slumped down into one of the soft gray chairs. Her head rolled back against the seat and she closed her eyes. She was thankful for what they had. Happy. But afraid that it would all come crashing down like a house of cards. But like always as long as she had Chester she would persevere. He was her rock.
A sound outside made Serena lean and pull the curtains back. Her gaze flicking over the neighborhood before to the familiar car that had pulled into their driveway.
