Watching as supplies and soldiers were being loaded onto the MV River Rose, General McArthur thought about the coming trip down to the Big Apple and what they needed to do while there; as President Michner put it when going over the plan with McArthur and several others, "We've got to re-establish some form of loose federation with nearby strongholds and the first of them are all those ones down in New York City. If you do nothing else, General, you've got to at least get on friendly terms with them; it does us no good to be up here on the Hudson when our main access to the rest of the world is through the Big Apple...."
Those words echoed in McArthur's mind as she watched all the activity going on; looking around, she whistled at one of the civilian technicians and motioned for him to come over to her. "Find Captain Torrance and tell him to come out here, alright?" she asked the man, who took off towards the riverboat. As soon as I talk to Torrance, she thought, I'll go over with McKenna on just who is going with us back down river; hopefully, this time around, the visit will yield better results...

"Okay, Kane, spin 'em up," William said to one of his two engineers as they stood on the River Rose's interior engineering space - the waterdeck, as it was called - the boat's chief engineer, Brett, standing on the opposite side of the deck. "Spin 'em up" was the call for firing up the boat's engines, which not only spun the boat's paddle-wheel - but also ran everything aboard the riverboat.
For several minutes, the three of them stood down below and listened as the engines ran at full song, the vibrations of the engine being felt as they stood there, enough to where if you stood in one spot and looked at the walls, you could swear you could see the auditory vibrations....which to everyone was a good thing; if you actually saw vibrations on a wall, that was bad.
Standing near the intercom, William heard it buzz; pressing the button, he called out, "Yeah, go ahead." "Captain, General McArthur wants to talk to you out on the dock," the voice said from up on the bridge. Sighing, William signaled for the engines to be shut down as he replied loudly, "Tell the general I'll be up there momentarily." Looking at his engineers, he quipped, "Sounds like the engines are working; make sure they continue that way, alright?"

Watching as Captian Torrance approached, General McArthur stood and looked around, trying to compose her thoughts. "You called, General?" he asked, joining her along the docks.
"Yeah, I think I did," McArthur replied, watching as troops and supplies continued to be loaded onto the River Rose; without looking at Torrance for the moment, she said, "How much longer will it take to be river-ready, Captain?"
"Shouldn't be longer than twenty-four hours, General," Torrance replied. "The boart's river-ready, those mortars on top are ready to go, troops are being on-loaded, supplies should be on-loaded in full pretty soon....we headed back downriver?"
"That we are, Captain Torrance...that we are," McArthur said, now turning to look at the riverboat captain. "We sail in twenty-four hours, William....will you be ready?"
Torrance thought of the question long and hard before answering...."Yes, ma'am, we'll be ready. Twenty-four hours."
"Carry on then, Captain," McArthur said, nodding as she looked down the river in the general direction of the Big Apple. Twenty-four hours, she thought...twenty-four hours, we sail downriver once more...

Twenty-four hours later - South Dock, West PointStanding at the end of the dock, the gangplanks connecting the MV River Rose to the dock behind her, General McArthur - joined by President Michner, who was standing alongside her - stood and watched as a small convoy of vehicles pulled up to the dock and disgorged their passengers, a reinforced platoon of infantry led by Major McKenna, whilst behind McArthur and Michner stood, at the boat end of the gangplank and aboard the observation section of the front top-deck, the River Rose's crew ready to receive them.
As she watched the platoon assemble into sections in front of the dock, McArthur couldn't help but wonder how history had placed her in this position at this time and in this situation; she set it aside as Major McKenna yelled out, "Company...attention!" The soldiers behind her snapped to attention with an alertness that pleased the engineer in McArthur; after doing a thorough inspection of the troops with McKenna and Michner, McArthur stood back a few paces and looked at them. They were in ACUs with helmet, body armor, rifle and rucksack; McArthur was similarly dressed - ACU with garrison cap, rifle slung over her shoulder, the only thing signifying her rank a single star in the center of her uniform blouse.
Composing her thoughts, McArthur spoke. "Soldiers, when we left the Big Apple a few months earlier, I said that we would return...well, that is precisely what we are going to do," pausing as a Blackhawk swooped overhead in a large, lazy orbit. "And this time, we intend to stay!" eliciting a hooah from the troops. "It is my sincerest hope that we can begin re-establishing the links of civilization between us and other strongholds, other settlements...and as I stand here today, I know that we will succeed in that endeavour, ladies and gentlemen
"The old order, the old ways....are gone; we sail into history today," pausing as another hooah burst forth, "and begin the effort of reclaiming this once great republic and getting her back on her feet," pausing for another hooah from the troops assembled. "The order is....let's board the boat, everyone! Move out!"
Hooah went the cry once more as the troops, led by Major McKenna, began crossing the gangplank to board the riverboat, while waiting next to it were several landing assault craft manned by a motley crew of sailors and civilians, ready to follow with supplies contained within them. As the soldiers continued boarding, McArthur said a short prayer and said, "Well, after you, Mr. President.."
