"I never said anything of the sort outsider. I said that we might make a warrior of you yet. Your catching on."
She continued digging. They really should have been digging two graves right now but she would have to accept that change in custom because the longer they were out here the more danger they would be in.
"We will dig one. It should be two but one will do."
They had finally finished digging and she put her shovel beside the grave and pushed the first body into it. She was counting on Oscar to push the second though she didn't say anything about it.
"I'm talking about a spirit guide. On your quest you will be alone. I will be nearby watching to make sure your safe. It is an exception to the custom that our situation demands. I can't very well let you get eaten can I? Well I suppose I could but that would be counter productive and would waste all of my effort to make you ready."
She started putting dirt over the two bodies and they quickly finished their work. Shadow howled as she sat and began to sing. It was an old song that her uncle had taught her when she was young.
Their walk back to the Jeep was uneventful, which she was thankful for. She didn't want to have to turn around and do another burial.
"Well my opinion of a warrior and yours are completely different," Oscar said as he shovel hit the dirt. "But I'll honour your traditions. I might have to teach you something in return," he said chuckling.
"Doesn't that go against what you just said about their spirits," he asked as they only dug one whole. "Won't their spirits be bothered." He sighed, "whatever less work for me."
Oscar pushed the body in. "Good to know I won't die. Hate to have my white man blood ruin it for me," he smirked as he helped her fill the hole. "What's a spirit guide? Like the spirit animal," he asked looking at them. "Like what you and Shadow are."
As they walked back to Jeep he looked at her, "what was that song? You sing pretty," he held his spear in his hand. "Did you teach the wolf that?"
When they got to the jeep he climbed in. Starting it up, "let's head back. I'm going to have s little fun on the way there."
"Their spirits may be unhappy, but less so then if we didn't bury them at all. As you said earlier. Sometimes tradition must take second seat to safety. The longer we are out here the more danger we are in."
She looked at him when he made his comment about having fun and she was a little terrified by what his definition of fun might be. She imagined him jumping the Jeep or some such craziness, but thus was his vehicle and not hers, in this, she decided to let him be himself.
"It's an old song and some of the words we don't know anymore. It is for the dead, a memorial and guide. I was teaching the spirits how to find rest, and no I didn't teach Shadow that. He just sort of started doing it. Shadow isn't really a spirit animal. My spirit animal is a wolf but a spirit animal is different. It is the first wolf, the primal spirit that every living wolf embodies."
The drove for a while and she looked over to him.
"If you find a spirit animal I will be impressed, not many people are contacted by their guide on their first journey."
"How many journeys have you been on," Oscar asked looking at her. "So I can catch up." He laughed as he pushed play on the CD. Music starts blasting through the speakers, a loud rock song. "Little fun," he said having to raise his voice. "I'll keep to the road. Don't worry." He sped down the road till he hit the main strip. There he let the wheels spin. Hitting top speeds as he went past the asphalt. "Still a beautiful song. You sing really nice." he felt the wind blow hard into their face as he tore down te straight strip. "So what spirit animal are there? Or are anyanimals a spirit animal? I seey self as a badger or a raccoon."
He turned the music off when they reached closer to their camp, "best to keep it safe," he said winking.
She started laughing when he asked how many journeys she had been on so he could catch up.
"If you want to catch up your going to have to pretty much stay on peyote as often as you can for a couple of months. My first journey was at 14. I'm 20. I go on at least one a month."
She gripped the side of the Jeep when he peeled out. Her eyes widened and she looked to the desert that seemed to be peeling away from them. It was exhilarating, but also terrifying.
"Any animal can be a spirit guide. They all say something about you as a person but they are all seek as equal."
When they got closer to the camp she was instantly alarmed. Smoke was rising over the camp in a level too high for just the fire, which they had not had lit anyways.
"Oscar, turn it off, and slow down, something is wrong."
"Damb. I doubt we hve that much," he said laughing. "So you've done drugs nontlhy since fourteen? Think you might need help." He smiled to show he was kidding. "How do you find one? Like will it just come to you or do you have to search for it? How do you know when you found it."
He saw the smoke and slowed the car. "Cojeme," he said pulling over where he parked before. He climbed out and reached for the gun. Then he shook his head and grabbed the spear. He made sure his knife was secure and waited for her. "There proaba my people," he said running off, the best he could on one leg.
He reached their camp and looked at the smouldering supplies. It was all up in flames. Two dead sat below chained up, one female and one male. They were fully naked. Written on the wall of the cliff in blood was the words.
"Savages need to burn."
Oscar spit in disgust. Other slurs and racist remarks covered the cliff below it, but those words were meant to stand out. He looked at K'wai to she how she'd react.
A fire raged behind her eyes and she pulled her Tomahawk from her belt and just ran when she saw the Chindi, the burning camp, and the message written on the bluff. She ran into camp, ghost right on her heals. When she made camp she burst into action. She buried the Tomahawk in the first Chindi's skull and then kicked the second down to the ground before stomping it's head into the ground. They had not been clean kills, far from it but her rage had blinded her.
Oscar walked up to her side. She hadn't followed her rules, that was a bad sign.
"Agreed they die," Oscar said looking at her. He didn't need to get revenge. Very little of his stuff hand burned. But he wanted to. The people would pay. "Let's look for clues," he said looking at the ground. "There tire tracks," he said pooining them out, "means they drove here. We could follow them." He gripped his spear tighter as he spoke. "Maybe Shadow can track them."
"Shadow can't track what doesn't have a scent, I can."
She flicked the blood off of her blade and started moving, following the tracks that Oscar had pointed out. Her rage was gone and now she was moving in her normal fashion again except for the cold efficiency that her actions had. She whistled to Shadow and he let to her side.
"The tracks come from thus way, it looks like they didn't use the main roads. A very bad mistake on their part."
She had thought she had been careful about who saw her. No matter she would extract answers from one of them before they killed them all.
"We need one alive to figure out how they found us, and who else knows."
"They did this with plan and order. It wasn't a random," Oscar said walking along side her. "Thre tracks are good if they don't lead to the main road. We'll loose them then." There was still rage in him, though he tried not to show it. "A town or a building would be desired. If the white mans going anywhere it's there." He stalked along the ground, his spear gripped tighter. "I can agree to keeping one alive. Though once we have answers he burns.
Oscar looked at her, "those weren't clean kills. Won't the spirits be angry?" He looked at her face. "Can I use my gun." He had it slung around but the spear was out. "Better aim."
"The spirits don't care about the kill. The kill is for us."
She didn't really want to talk. They crossed the line off of her people's land and she smiled. She actually wanted to let Oscar go wild this time and now she didn't have to feel bad about doing it.
"We are no longer on my land. You may do as you please. These people deserve no dignity anyways."
She checked the stringing on her bow. It was taught and she had ten arrows, hopefully that would be more then enough to confront thus group. Especially with Oscar's guns.
"We hit them hard and fast. I'll keep Shadow back, his instincts don't help him much against guns. This will be our fight."
"The I will hold nothing back," he said unslingin his sub machine gun. He clicked off te safety and made sure it was a fresh clip. "If I'm using this you can't go all tomahawk. I might hit you. So stay back behind me."
The follows the tracks till it came to a small farm stead. An Woden fence surrounded the property. A large truck was in the front. A lone man sat on the porch. Bottle of something in his hand. Oscar his behind a rock as he got a closer look. There was to confederate flag frying freely. One on the house and another on the truck. Movemet went across the window, someone had walked by. Two men camer on around the back of the house. One in overalls and the other just in his underwear. "Spot four," Oscar said lowly. "There might be more." A small man came out of the house. He had on a straw hat and was missing a hand. He was smaller than the figure that passed by te window, which meant one more. The small man past out rifles to all his frieds and they cheered and spit.
"I'll open with my bow," she said in a voice barely above a whisper.
She drew an arrow, aiming at the man passing out guns. She couldn't be certain, but she thought he was the leader. Seeing your leader fall was demoralizing.
"I'm going to take him and then we start shooting."
No sooner then she said the words had she let fly. Her shot struck true and the man now had a feather sticking out of the back of his head. She drew again and before Oscar could fire she let fly again and another man dropped. The racists were finally starting to react. She heard Oscar open up fire and she readied another arrow.
"Fair enough," Oscar said rasing his gun. He aimed the gun, "maybe we should go atound....," it was to late. K'wai ha fired an arrow. He watched it hit the guy passing out guns and then another flew. There goes that plan he thought. He opened fire at the other two guys. One dropped from a head shot the other hit in the leg. He ducked behind the truck and began shooting. Three more men came from inside the house, each shooting at Oscar and K'wai.
"Cabron," Oscar said as he lied around the rock. Five men came from around the house. They took fire and ducked into cover. Oscar fired te gun again, dropping one of the men from the house. The bullets hitting the his chest.
"Fuck," she said as she dived for the protection of a rock. These were bad odds. Even she was nervous.
She leaned out and let fly again, an arrow sprouting from another man's heart. 8, she thought to herself. But that one will turn. She hunkered down until she heard the distinctive sounds of reloading. As soon as she did she leaned out again and fired. Her shot went low, into one of the men's guts. He wouldn't likely br fighting anymore but he wasn't dead yet. 7.
"Look'it dis' fiine specimen ya'll!" One of the hicks standing before Hannah said. She sat knelt before three men, her hands tired firmly behind her back. They stared at her with disgusting looks on their faces. She refrained from spitting on the man, as she didn't want any reason for them to do more harm to her than they probably would. So many months on the road, flying safe, but just one time scavenging for food, and she gets trapped by a bunch of no good hillbillies. One of them stepped towards her, and unzipped his fly.
Somebody from outside came running in frantically all of the sudden, "Fellas, we be gottin some trouble out dere! Come ouwn! Charlie and Dusty, ya'll stay here!" Five of the men left the room, leaving Hannah alone with the guys Charlie and Dusty. As Charlie went to the window to see what was happening, and Dusty to one on the opposite side of the room, Hannah rolled back, pressed her knees to her chest, and pulled her arms from around her back from under her butt. She rushed to a table nearby, quick and agile, and before Charlie could react, she grabbed a meat cleaver that was left there, and planted it between his eyes. As quickly as she could, she pulled a hunting knife the man had in his pocket, and ran across the room.
Just in time for Dusty to turn around and fire off a shotgun he had in his hands, she somersaulted forward, and evaded the blast. As soon as she reached the hallway, and out of line of sight, she used the knife to cut her bindings. Luck was on her side then, and on a table in the hallway sat a loaded revolver. She kept the knife in one hand, and prepared to shoot with her right. Before she could do anything though, two men from outside heard the shot and left their posts to see what had happened. She could hear Dusty inform the men of what had happened, and one of them thought it wise to run in after "the stupid woman" on his own. She rolled her aim around the corner, and quickly shot the man in the center of the chest, and then rolled back around. He fell back, coughing up blood, and quite surely dead after a moment of silence.
The stunned men got their act back together, and pushed over a table and ducked behind it. From where she was in the hall, either way went past a door visible to them. She had accomplished spotting that the new arrival had a pistol when she capped his buddy, and they were sure to have their aim trained on both sides of her. She was in quite the predicament.
Oscar watched K'wai drop two more. They were unclean kills. It must be really getting to her. With the one he killed that left only five more. Oscar let fire another blast, till his clip clicked empty. The spray hit another baddy, causing him to smash to the ground screaming.
Oscar reloaded another clip and fired again. The bullets miss and he slung the gun down. Taking a spear he threw it. The spear hit a mans leg as it had a the Chindi earlier. The man screamed out in pain, the the spear clearly through his leg. He just kept screaming as Oscar pulled his gun out again and began to fire.
"Only two left," Oscar said as he moved around the otherside of the rock. The two left kept firing, not letting up. These white men seemed to have infinite ammo. Oscar crept around the side of the large truck and came face to face with the man he had wounded earlier. Damb forgot about him, he thought as the mans gun hit his face. He felt a boot pressed on his neck, slowly pushing down. Oscars gun and ben knocked loose and slid under the truck. His arm reached for it as the man pushed down deeper.
Luckily for Oscar the last two men went inside for god knows what reason. Kwai didn't know what was going on until she heard gunshots and saw a muzzle flash. Some kind of fight was going on inside as well. Maybe someone else was in there that had a vendetta against them or maybe they were just fighting amongst each other. She heard Oscar's gun skitter out from his grasp and she went into motion.
She whistled to Shadow, it was an order to heal and attack if he saw an opening. They ran as a perfect unit, her strides matching his and him moving around obstacles in sync with her. Before the man could react to them he had an arrow in his firing arm and a wolf at his throat.
"Oscar you got him right. Seems like we owe your life to someone inside. I'm going to go find out who that is. Shadow guard."
She put her bow on her back and loaded a spear into the atlatl. She flung it straight through the window as she busted through the door, Tomahawk in hand. She quickly buried it in the second ones head. She was in a bad position and didn't know how many more there might be so she dove behind a couch to survey the situation, her Tomahawk still in the dead man.
Out of a stroke of luck, or just skill, the spear happened to pierce Dusty's shoulder. The man cursed and pulled it out as some native american girl crashed through and tomahawked the second new arrival. Hannah didn't know what was going on, but she took the risk, and again took advantage of the commotion. As she turned the corner, she saw the girl's feet disappear behind the couch, and witnessed Dusty pulling the spear from his shoulder and start prancing over to the couch in a fit of rage, obviously not thinking straight.
Hannah didn't waste time with reasoning with what had happened, she quickly aimed for his head, and fired a shot off. The bullet hit smack dab into the side of his skull, sinking itself into his brain. The force of the shot pushed him over, quite dead, and he slammed into the wall, blood smearing as he fell. She didn't take the chance to welcome the newcomer, but instead ran behind the table they had upturned for cover, and took a peek at her surroundings. There were two windows she could run for from there, of course risking being shot at, or whatever this girl was using, not recalling bullet fire, but it might have been worth the risk.
Fact of the matter was she didn't know how many people there were, but as the men were distracted by her, it could have been a sneak attack by few. She would rather play it safe though, and assume the first suggestion. She bit her lower lip, and made a big decision. Instead of running for it, she decided to confront the girl. She quickly placed her aim over the table, viewing the couch area before her, and in a monotone voice, ask, "Who are you? What are your intentions here?"
Oscar pulled himself up off te groud. "Thanks," he said dusting himself off. "You go check on my saviour I'll watch cotton eyed Joe," he said spitting. His neck was bruised and he had a black eye.
He looked at the wolf. "When need him alive shadow," Oscar said. He whistled with his two fingers for the wolf to let go of the man. When the wolf complied he stepped on the leg he had shot earlier.
The man screamed and hollered as Oscar couched closer to him. "Don't movd Cabron. The wolf will tear your throat out. We need to know why you Attacked us," he said punching the man in the stomach.
"Fuck off. I ain't saying shit," the yokel said. Oscar wound his fist again, this time to the mans head.
"Wrong answer Fucktwad," he said grabbing the mans face. "Now again why'd you attack. How'd you find us."
