Thankfully the ride back into the city was uneventful. There were a few walkers that littered the highway that were easily dispatched by Owen and Charles as she clung tightly to Owen's waist. Both Owen and Charles seemed to enjoy this ride across 310 back into the city. It was the same road she took to get out to the Bayou in the first place to back home. She laid her head on Owen's back, closing her eyes as the wind whipped past them.
It didn't take them as long to get back to the city, or so it seemed, maybe because they weren't in a junky little car that could break down any minute. As they got closer, she gave instructions on what roads to follow in order to get back to her apartment. Off the highway, things got a little more sketchy although Owen and Charles seemed pretty prepared for the people that were waiting for people like them to come back to town. Any attack would be met with bullets but she tried to take them down roads that would hopefully avoid any large crowds of people.
It had already been proven to her that groups were here, groups like Acer's thugs that were just waiting for people like her to come back and be plucked off the streets and forced to do the unthinkable. She readied her bat as they got closer to the city, into the Garden District where her apartment was. She knew Charles wanted to find his sister, as he overheard him tell Skylar that back at the house. She knew this task was impossible. Maybe she made it this far, but it was unlikely she would come back here.
Once they rolled up St. Charles, she pointed to the building where the tree had fallen in the road and the SUV with her supplies from Oklahoma still sat. She became suddenly nervous as she came back into this memory. Memories were always left behind. She wanted to leave many behind but here she was, rolling up to her apartment with someone else to show him her past. She was on edge as they got closer. The smell of wet sidewalks was strong as the skeletal body of the walker her and Luca took a picture with still laid in the very spot where she was put out of her undead misery.
She waited for Owen to completely stop and throw down the kick stand before she got off the back of the bike, gathering the bags so she could bring some supplies back and maybe even a few clothes from her closet. The sound of the bikes got the attention of a few straggling walkers that she would dutifully take care of. She had to prove to them she could fight. They didn't see her fight back at the house and she wanted to prove her weight. Lifting up the bat as she threw one of the knapsacks over one shoulder, she moved towards the apartment building and took a crack at the walker, burying the nails in deep. It took a few yanks to pull it free and when she did, she looked back at Charles.
One hand came to her head, running her fingers through her hair as she looked at him awkwardly. She hoped he wouldn't blow up at her like he blew up at Owen back at the house when it came to talking about his sister.
"I don't know Charles, why would your sister come out this far? I mean, she left her brother to find her girlfriend? How do you suspect you're gonna find her in the city?"
She watched as Owen looked around, down the street and at the remnants of what it was like here before they left.
"This is where I lived." She pointed to the building before pointing east down St. Charles as she gave Charles some instructions. "If you head east, you'll hit Canal Street. Head south and you'll be right in the heart of downtown. Turn left on Chartres Street and you'll get yourself right into the Quarter. Don't think there's much left down there. Maybe your sister followed the Mississippi."
