Hearing Jessie's question, Stephanie turned, still kneeling, and pointed towards several light, roll-able racks, where all the Scouts and Scavengers' chest rigs hung from. "Those racks, the ones with the chest rigs on them, Jessie? Roll those out here in front of the counter so that we go over everyone's rigs before they start filing in here." Getting up from her kneeling position, Stephanie lifted her backpack and gun-kits up onto the counter and set them off to one side so they wouldn't be in the way as they worked.
Walking over, she picked out her own chest rig and thigh holster, both of them in matte-black colored piece of gear that she'd wear for the trip out, and set them on the counter. "Every Scout has their own set of gear, mainly a chest rig for whatever primary weapon they carry, and a thigh holster for their pistol. Just as a parachute rigger makes sure everyone's parachute is ready-to-go and working, part of an Armorer's job is to make sure all this gear's ready-to-go when they get here. Think things are busy at the moment? Wait about two hours; what looks like a cavernous space will be filled with everyone checking over their gear, checking over everyone else's gear...the whole ball of wax."
"The good thing about these chest rigs," pausing to slip her own on over her shirt, "is that you can pretty much customize these for anything; for instance, since my primary weapon is that 12-gauge over there," pointing towards her shotgun, "instead of pistol mags, when we go out, this'll be full of 12-gauge shells, a pocket to carry a portable radio in..and probably a few other things as well." Taking a moment to adjust the shoulder straps and cinch up the waist, she added, "When you put one of these on, Jessie, you want the straps as snug as possible; not too tight but tight enough to where it'll feel as though its' like a second skin almost....which reminds me," pausing to size up Jessie for a moment, "we need to get you fitted for a chest rig as well. Shouldn't take too long to do, though," she added....
"It'll only be a couple of weeks of awful suck and hard work before we come back here to the boring and tedium." The words she spoke, while light hearted, were laced with a little resentment at the current situation as well as trepidation. "How long do you think it'll be?"
Thinking about the question for a moment, Stephanie replied, "I think they said a week, maybe two,; these days...anything's possible outside the wire," waving her hand back-and-forth as if to indicate her own uncertainty at how long they'd be gone from Rikers, "but as the saying goes, 'let's not sign any life insurance policies before we go,' trying to add a little bit of humor. "You know, its' weird," Stephanie added, "all the times I've been to the Rotten Apple...I've never been to Yankee Stadium; this'll be a new experience for me; just think: we'll get to see where Ruth and Gehrig and DiMaggio and Mantle once played at....I wonder if they still offer tours of the stadium? Maybe there's still some drinks there as well..."
Laughing for a moment at her own thought, she looked over towards the rigs and said, "Jessie, let's go ahead and get those rolled over here and we'll start going through them; the clock's a-ticking...the sooner we can get these done, the sooner we can start looking over the Mini-14s' so that so everyone else gets here, they won't have to do much themselves."
