Axel pulled the Subaru into the parking lot of an old hardware store. He shut the engine off. It was late, well past midnight. They had been over run where they stopped before, and he just kept driving to where it was safe. This town was clear so far. No flesh eaters in the street. That was good enough for him. He took the keys out.
Agnes was asleep in the back, curled up with her pack and monkey. He looked to his wife. He didn't know if she was asleep, or if she simply wasn't talking to him. It wouldn't be the first night, even from before all this started. If she was asleep he would let her keep sleeping, he could clear out the store on his own.
Stepping out he grabbed his pistol and machete. He set them both on the dash and leaned against the small SUV. Reaching into his pocket he drew a pack of smokes. He lit one with his lighter and took a puff, putting all but the cigarette dangling from his mouth away. He took another puff and flicked a bit of ash. He would kill for a cigar, and something stronger right now.
Looking to the store he took note of the layout. The windows and door all had plywood over it, pressed up so you couldn't see inside. The door was closed, but unlocked, at least from what he saw. It was one story, not very big. A chain link fence ran around back, the gate off to the right of the store. There were other stores in the lots next to it, but they didn't have the same appeal to him. Sewing stores, and a flower boutique had no use. They could use lumber and tools.
He took the final drag of the cigarette as he flicked it to the ground, crushing it under his boot. He took a deep breath, about ready to head inside.
