Opening her eyes, Stephanie could feel the cool air envelop her as she got up from her bed in the expansive Maintenance Quarters, located near the center of Rikers Island. Formerly an inmate-run machine shop facility, the Hive's inhabitants had turned it into a fully functioning maintenance facility, where most of the Island's coterie of vehicles and weapons were checked, repaired, maintained...everything needed to keep the Island functioning. Over time, the Island's Combat section had turned part of it into dormitory-style quarters for the island's Scouts and Scavengers, those men and women who helped keep the Island supplied and had painstakingly mapped out just about every part of the former Five Boroughs sans' Manhattan and Staten Island.
Looking around as she reached underneath her bed for a fresh shirt, Stephanie could see people moving to and fro, the sun's rays streaming in from a high-set window; though early in the day, the Scav Shack, as the Island's scouts and scavengers referred to their quarters, was quickly becoming a busy place. Slipping her shirt on and tucking it underneath the top of her jeans, she grabbed her boots, slipped them on and got up, taking a moment to stretch, trying to work out any kinks in her lanky frame. Kneeling down to grab her sidearm, she got and proceeded to walk outside, trying to remember where the Island's Armory was, where she'd spent most of the past week working on weapons, keeping track of ammunition and otherwise doing everything she could to stay busy.
After a second's thought, she began walking towards the Armory, ready for another long day; as much as she liked the camaraderie and friendships she'd made over the past several months since running Tory, Michael and the others, she knew she couldn't simply sit around and do nothing as she thought of it; she needed to stay busy 'lest her mind began wandering, as it would often do in-between drug ripoffs back in Baltimore. She also knew that she was going to have to make a decision about her future: as she thought of it, she could either remain a nomad and stay with the group she'd come to the island or she could stay on the Island and become a permanent part of the Island's menagerie of Scout/Scavengers. Truth be told, she thought as she stepped inside the Island's Armory building, she kinda' liked things around here; as Tegan had told her the week before, she'd gotten Stephanie inside....thus far, Stephanie had proven her worth and she really didn't want to do anything to wreck that...even if, she thought, it meant splitting from the rest of her old group....a thought she honestly didn't want to have to fathom quite yet.
