Cade felt something tao his cheek, call his names it woke him up, barely. He stirred and blinked s few times. There was a blurry figure long hair. It was female, he could st least tell that. It tapped his cheek again, calling his name.
"Collette," he said, his voice weak. He didn't know if it was her, who else it would be. "I...I think I tore my stitches," he said wearily, almost a whisper. "There's blood." He held up his hand, fingers stained red.
He was blinking heavily, each time for longer and longer. "I feel...feel." He stopped tasking, eyes closed and sunk into his chair. He was still breathing, but back to being incoherent.
Atlas nodded, running through Colette's instructions in his head as he hurried out of the room and into the kitchen. "Left of the sink... second cabinet..." he muttered to himself as he looked for a bowl. After finding one that was suitable he grabbed a bottle of water and shoved it in his coat pocket, then doubled back when he remembered the towel. He brought his findings back to Colette, setting them down beside her and filling the bowl with water. "Here," he said. "This is the stuff from the kitchen, so you can at least get started while I head out back."
"People call me Finch," he added. It wasn't so much people as person that called him 'finch', but god, would he give anything to hear that name again right then. He missed Tobias so much it was like a constant weight in his stomach. He just wanted something to remind him of him, even if he knew it was going to hurt even more to hear the name. He felt that ache in his stomach again at just the thought of Tobias, and before he could let it affect him he quickly started out the back door toward the shed.
Collette was truly worried. She was making shit up as she went along, and didn't really know what to do. She couldn't sew him up, so staples it was. She was focused on Cade, 'I know, I know, just " she paused. She wasn't even gonna say it, he wasn't allowed to die on her! He was all she had left!
She wasn't going to give up on him and become some sniveling little girl. She nodded as the guy came back from the kitchen. He was going after the rest, "right." she said as he gave her a name. Finch, wasn't that some kind of a bird? She let it roll through her thoughts , she focused on cleaning Cade's wound, and trying to get the bleeding to slow down. She needed to be able to see it if she was going to use the staple gun and close it off. Pain killer, he would need something to ease the pain. Colette spoke to him as she used the water and towels to clean him up, "Cade....I am gonna do something, it's gonna hurt, I don't know about alcohol for the pain, it might make you bleed worse, Cade, do you hear me?"
Cade was unresponsive as she asked about the alcohol. His eyes were closing, opening, closing again heavier and heavier each time. He was slipping in and out of consciousness. Soon he slumped over, head hanging as he sat there. Unresponsive, out cold. He was still bresthing, slowly, far apart. She would have to hurry, he wouldn't have much time left.
The pain he couldn't feel, couldn't feel anything. No pint trying to wake him, there wouldn't be a result. He didn't move, didn't act, just sat there, slumped over, turning paler and paler. He was almost like snow now, eyes heavy and darkened, bags visible. He still continued to breath, meant dead yet.
Soon as the kid brought her back what she needed, Colette didn't hesitate. She already had the area clean and had stopped the blood flow by applying pressure. Her hands covered in his blood, she grabbed the whiskey bottle and poured it over the seeping wound. She winced for him, knowing if he had been concious it would have hurt like hell.
Without thinking, she used the staple gun, cleaning it with what was left in the bottle. No real time to sterilize it properly. Quickly, she sealed the wound with about eight staples. She felt sick every time it clicked, but she had to.
She'd get the kid to help her get him to the sofa and that's where she stayed through the night. She watched him, debated giving him some of her blood, but was afraid they weren't compatible, so didn't try it.
It had been four days since Cade's stitches had torn. Collette had stapled him up, but that hurt like hell. Probably wasn't sanitary, but he didn't move as much. The time it had taken for Cade to get better was going to take longer now, he could feel it. What had only a week left was now extended, two or three. Part had he'pales, but the rest was being held together by the staples.
He was getting restless now. He was bed ridden all over again. At least with the staples he could move, up and down the stairs, as long as he didn't turn. He sat now in the arm chair by the window. Collette wasn't here, she had ran out, to get something. He wanted to get out, find those who had hurt him, Acer's men. There were still rats out there, he needed it. He was tied to extreminate them.
Cade looked up as he heard a car pull up. Coerce was back, with supplies.
Colette pulled the truck into the barn and shut it off. She sat there for a moment and readied herself to deal with Cade. She had really thought she was gonna lose him this time. He'd been out for two whole days and then a couple more with only brief moments of being awake. She hadn't left him. Kept silent watch over him. His would was closed, but he was still weak. The whole thing was taking it's toll on him. He seemed angry. She knew he was restless, but it didn't help that she was the only one he could take out his frustration on.
She got out and grabbed a few bags from the back seat along with her shotgun. She headed for the house, figuring to come back later and lock up the barn. She didn't know where that kid had gone off to, he'd simply vanished one night. Not that she had been good company.
Colette walked inside off the back porch, into the kitchen. She set the bags on the table, then shit and bolted the back door." Jony, I'm home." She called, trying to make light of the situation. She started unpacking the bags. She hit the neighbors a few miles in either direction. Not a lot to get, but she found some food and a few things to help him. If he came into the kitchen, she'd toss a perscription bottle at him. Label read for a woman's name, but it was OxyContin," for pain." She smiled at him," found some of these kid drinks, supposed to get your electrolytes back up." She pulled out a plastic jug that Said pedialyte on it.
Cade heard Collette walk in. She came in through the back porch, up the old wooden steps. He could hear her all the way from in the living room. Standing up he winced and held his side. Don't tear the wound, don't tear the wound. He came into the kitchen, saw her with a bag of things. He was always worried, everytime she left, every time she was gone.
He smirked at ther, watched her bolt the door shut. Watching her unpack her bags he smiled. "Run into any trouble," he asked calmly, "see anyone." He kept his voice low, calm. "What did you find." He caught the bottle of pills. "What are these." He asked. She said for pain and he nodded. "Won't make me fucked up will they? Loopy or high?"
He looked at the other drinks she pulled out. "They safe to drink, aren't expired." He then watched her set the jug down. "Pedialyte what's that." He asked calmly. "Did you find any food? Ammo? Anything like that? I know you want me better, but I don't need you harming yourself over me. You still need to be safe."
He leaned on the island. "I was thinking of trying to go for a walk today, the wounds closed, and I can't sit in that chair any longer."
Colette watched him move and walk. She could tell he was still in great pain. He was trying so hard, and worried for her. She smiled at him," they will if you abuse them, but they will help." She kept pulling things out of the bag. " I know what we need, and out here I knew where to look, these used to be my neighbors, remember?" She chuckled softly as she laid ammo on the table and knives. " got a few shot guns and rifles for these shells. One pistol, but I left them in the truck."
Did she see anyone? " corpses, plenty of those, but nothing living." She checked the date on the jugs," they are just out of date, shouldn't hurt, supposed to replenish your electrolytes. Figured with your blood loss, it would help you. Seems my neighbors had grandkids, I hadn't even known."
Colette walked over and stood in front of him," you wanna get out of the house, I know, how about we start small and you can go to the truck with me and get the guns I found."
"If you say so. How much do I take," Cade asked, jiggling the container of pills as he watched her. "Doesn't seem like much. When did you become s Doctor anyway." He smirked and opened them. "I'm not going to abuse them. I'm not a pill head." He watched her lay out the ammo and knives on the table.
He reached down to pick one up, then spun it in his hands. "Yeah I know these were your neighbours. But you were in town more than anything. The bar life was your life, not out here. I just want you safe, I keep expecting you not to come back. I don't know what I would do if you didn't come back." He set the knife down, "I'd probably die. I can't even move."
He paused. "Guns will be good, we need them. I can't use the bow anymore, not until I'm fully healed. I know that." Cade looked at her, in the eye. "The corpses weren't a problem? Not a hoarde around the corner?" She checked the jugs and he smiled. Expired but still good for him. He took the other jug and opened it. Bring it to his lips he took a large sip. "Feel better already," he said with a joking smirk.
"We could do that, short walk to the truck. I just can't lay in bed or sit in that dam chair any longer." He smiled, "let's go get those guns. How many did you say we're out there?"
Colette stared at him as he asked again about the dead. " nothing I couldn't handle. And no, I wouldn't call a dozen or so scattered around the houses within a two/ three mile radius a horde." She'd been scared, just once during her runs, but she didn't tell him about it. She would t dare, he'd not let her go alone and right now, he would be a hinderence instead of help.
He perked up about the guns. She knew he would. Only difference about men and boys in these parts were the size of their toys. She smirked at him as he took a swing out the bottle. Funny, she'd had to drink that stuff once after she had a three day binge. Her mother had insisted, and Colette remembered that shit tasting sickening sweet.
"Alright, you wanna go get the guns, shot gun, two rifles and a pistol was all I found. Had to chase down a walker for the pistol." She laughed and slipped over to him, " you need help, or are you good til the porch?"
"We'll that's good. We don't need them st out front door though. I haven't seen any wander into the yard. not that I could do much about it anyway," Cade said as he looked away. He hated feeling this week, like he could do nothing. He was useless, if anything happened, they would up shits creek. They would loose, because he wasn't strong enough.
He set the jug down, "suit taste bad," he said whiping away at his mouth. He moved along to the, living room. He,looked back out the wid ow, same dam view it had been for the last few days. Nothing changed. Nothing he could do. She came up behind him and said they could go get the guns, he nodded in response and watched her slip close.
"I'm fine, I can make it to the porch, stairs can still be a pain in my side. But I'll make it," Cade said with a smile and a nod. "So had to chase down a biter. Was it on his belt or something? How'd you see it." He was never s gun man, he could give two shits about guns, but his she got it, that was interesting. Cade preferred his bow, a knife, or his bare hands, guns were just in case. And right now, that's what they needed.
Cade moved down through the door to the sticky, humid air outside. He could feel his clothes clinging to him. He kept walking, stopping short st the steps going down.
Colette listened to him, and smirked as he asked about the walker. She knew that would get his attention. He didn't want her help. He moved on , away from her, on his own.
She hung back and watched him, til he stopped at the steps. Colette walked out the door and crossed the porch, 'Now , do you want my help?" She glanced over at him, "Yeah, i saw the gun belt on him as he was shuffling along in the front yard over at Ms. Millie's, I think he was her son. I don't know, but I didn't feel like running after him, so I ran him down with the truck and then took the gun." She smirked at him, "sides, he had friends and I didn't want to deal with all of them."
"Yeah, I could use it here," Cade said calmly looking at her. He waited till she approached his side and wrapped and arm around her shoulders. Gripping the railing he made his way down the steps, carefully, slowly. She was there to guide him, support him where she could. It was mostly so he didn't move to much, terming his wound again.
"You keep mentioning these neighbours, I don't know any of them," he said as he moved along. "I lived in the city remember, closer to the river than out here. Wasn't rich enough to afford this kind of place." He laughed as they came down the steps. He released his grip from her, he could take it in his own again.
"You're lucky you didn't get the truck stuck. Saw that once, some of Acer's hunters. They had a car, a walkers was mangled up under it, wrapped around the wheel." He laughed again, "they had crowbars trying to pry it off. Think they just ended up leaving it and going in foot." He shocked his head. "Can you believe he's dead. I mean really dead. He was an ass, and a pain in our side for over s year. But now he's dead. It's just...its just weird, we knew him, even before all this. Yet he's dead." He looked away. "You did good."
Colette didn't say much, she helped him down te steps, listening to him. When he let go, she stood and watched him for a few moments." We weren't rich, my grandparents left this place to my mom." Her tone told that she resented being called rich, even if he said it in a roundabout way.
He brought up Acer and her mood darkened more." Yeah," she moved past him. He was slow moving and she wanted to get this over with. Why did he have to bring him up?!
Colette got to the door of the barn and turned to wait for him. Her whole being was on edge now, thanks to him." I'm not sorry he's dead, Cade. I don't know why you had to bring that up!" She stared at him. Is this how it was gonna be? Was he constantly going to needle at her, just to piss her off," I didn't get the truck stuck, and we needed that gun, damn." She ran a hand through her hair, trying to get herself back under control. Fuck! She needed a drink!
"Well at least you had a place, weren't five of you in a single room. I grew up with nothing. So yeah, you're rich," he said with a smirk. She was always such a hardass, always so serious. He shook his head. "Doesn't matter, this place was bigger than the one I grew up in. More rooms than my entire apartment on my low end paying job."
He moved toward the car. He didn't go the fastes, but didn't want to tear his stitches. As he came up on the barn and watched as she opened it. "You're not? I know I'm not. He was a thorn in out side, and a constant ass. It was bound to happen sooner or later. I just thought maybe we should talk about, considering we haven't in months. We left those people at the hotel, went off on our own. You gave up your roll as leader, and it all fell. For fucks sake Angel died, you haven't even mentioned her since it happened. Dan died, all these people we knew. I can't talk about loss, is that it." He felt his fists clench.
"What the fuck has gotten into you. You're taking risks, and barely speak to me," he said with a huff. "What's going on, talk to me." He placed a hand on her arm. "This ain't like you Collette, not now." He looked around. "What's are plan anyway? We always had a plan. But now, what's? We're just going to stay here till we die? I know it sucks, I can barely move. But I don't need you in a slump like this, it's not helping."
Colette was back to him, opening the doors to the barn. He just wouldn't shut up! He kept talking! She was doing her best to just bare it, until he spoke her name. Her whole body went rigid. Knuckles white, as her hands gripped the door handle. She let go of it and slammed her clenched fist into the door.
Once, twice, three times before she whirled on him. If she hadn't stopped, she'd have broke her good hand. Blood dripped down her fingers from her knuckles as she pointed her finger at him," no, you don't get to talk about it, her, you sure as fuck don't get to talk about her!" She was livid," I'm in a slump! What the fuck have I been doing? Taking care of your sorry ass, that's what! " she was right up on him now," she's dead, because of you! You couldn't wait! Had to be the big shot! She's dead because of YOU! I am so angry! That's what's wrong with me!! I miss her, her voice!" She backed off and shook her head. Fuck that, she would t cry in front of him!" I walked away to keep you alive! And you wanna know what's the plan?" She laughed, an eerie sound," my plan is to get you well, able to take care of yourself, and leave. It hurts me to even look at you!" She licked her lips," I love You and despise you at the same time. With every breath I want to hit you, punch the hell outta you and kiss you all at the same time! You're all I have left, and that keeps me here!" She fell silent and walked into the barn, blood drops marking her trail.
Cade watched as she slammed her hand again and again into the door. He moved forward, "stop you're going to break it. Collette, fucking stop." He went to reach out for her but she spun around and began tearing into him. Called him a hot shot, said she hated him. Cade clenched his fist and just glared. She had no right, no right to say these things.
"I can talk about her all the fuck I want. You forget. She was my friend too. She was more my friend than you even know. They all were. That didn't stop you from givIng up. Do you know how many times you were in there? How many times you'd shut yourself in the fucking office, to drink, be alone. You were their leader, they looked up to you. Angel, she was my friend too Collette. She confided in me as she did you. I was there for her, the times you weren't. So I can talk about her all imfucking want."
He kept his eyes on her. "If you don't want to be here, than leave. I'm fine on my own. This isn't my fault. You sat around on your ass. You did nothing. I was the only one who took action, and in the end I won. So cut this bullshit," he yelled. He Felt his hand, clenching again and again. "If anything,Mathis was your fault. You didn't do anything. Couldn't. Cause your weak, always have been."
He kept his eyes on her. "Just go, leave. I'm fine on my own. I'll stay here till I can. I've freely, longer distances, I don't need you watching over me. And you clearly don't need me. How many times did I have your back, and it all counts for nothing. I loved you Collette, I did. But now, since we met those people. You changed. I don't anymore. So leave, or I will."
Colette couldn't believe he said that to her. All the work she did. She locked herself away at night to think, to plan, and all day, she worked right along side her group, building, blocking doors, going on runs. It wasn't til the last 6 months that she stepped back and gave more resposibility to Angel and Des, and Clayton.
He was blaming her for all this! She had been willing to give into Acer's sick demands to save them! Being there to fuck someone was not being there for them!
She glared at him and shrugged, "Fine, you want me gone, I'm gone." She opened the door and pulled out a shot gun, handing it to him, "Here, don't say I never gave you nothin." She pushed past him and marched back to the house. She ran up the steps and crossed the porch , heading inside. Colette grabbed a box and started grabbing supplies for herself. Some of the ammo, and water, food, some pain pills. She headed upstairs, and came back a few minutes later with a duffel bag shoved full of clothes.
He wanted her to leave, she'd leave. She grabbed the box and out the door she went, heading back to the barn and her truck.
She passed him, "Take care of yourself." She didn't say it mean, it was lacking of any emotion at all. She shoved the box into the back seat and her bag, and shut the door. She climbed into the driver's seat and shut the door. Her hand was still bleeding a bit and she wiped it on the thigh of her jeans. She glanced in the rearview as she started the truck, before pulling it out of the barn, and heading up the dirt driveway.
She said some words and then left. Cade stared in shock, she was gone, pulling down the road. He went to say something, but it was to late, she was gone. She left, she actually left him. He held the rifle she gave her, the box of shells too. Slowly he made his way back inside. She had done it, got mad enough to actually leave.
He knew it had only been a matter of time before she had to, but she did. Cade sighed as he climbed the stairs, doing the best to be careful. He didn't have to worry about tearing stitches, or opening the wound. It had healed, a scar showing where the knife went in. But it was still sore, still tender. It hurt if he turned a certain way, or if he touched it.
Slowly he went up the steps and inside. He sw the picture in the wall, her, moutside the bar. He went forward and brought his fist toward it, smashing the glass, cutting his fist on it. "You fucking bitch," he yelled as he took the photo off the wall and tossed it across the room. Moving to the ktichen he saw another. Pulling it off he threw that one too, toward the wall. He was angry, wanted destruction.
Cade moved toward the kitchen, he grabbed the knife that had been used to cut up some of the food. That cunt, how could she just leave? Leave him? What a bitch.
Cade sat down in an empty chair and put his head in his hands. Tomorrow he would leave, head back to the city. He needed to find Acer's men. He needed to kill any that were left. He was done waiting around, acting all nice for fucking Collette. He was done with her, never wanted to see her again.
Taking the knife he stabbed it into the table. Slowly he made his way upstairs to pack his bag.
