When Bethany said personal drama, Sarah visibly stiffened. She lifted the legs again, and didn't say anything at first. She glanced at Paul, and helped take the body out. When they came back for the next, she looked at Bethany," I didn't mean for that to happen, honestly, but he deserved to know the truth instead of have her play games with him." She glanced at Loyd, then back at Bethany," I am sorry about him leaving, and I don't know where he would go. I hope he comes back, he didn't take supplies." She swallowed and looked at Paul," almost done?"
Sarah felt bad about Thad. He had seemed kind, which was part of why him being lied to had gotten to her so badly." If youwant to go look for him, we can." She pointed to the big black SUV," we can take the knight. " Sarah looked at Paul," once we get these piled and set, say a prayer, then the others can take over. I can get Jay, and we could go, scout out a few miles."
"Not much of anything," Paul answered Lloyd, "we have a garden, did some farming in that crop out there. People work on the wall, or guard. We also go on a lot of runs, some times big, sometimes small. Depends on who organizes them. Mostly we just relax, be with people. A nice change of pace. I'm sure they'll find you something to do each day, everyone pitches in"
Bethany asked about Thadd and Paul shook his head. "I'm not sure, he tore off hasn't came back. Bike can only go so far, didn't fill it up. He will be back, didn't take anything but his gun. Thaddeus can handle himself from what I've seen, though I don't really know him. I don't know where he would go. Just wait till he gets back though, these people, Corey, they were his friends."
He looked at Sarah. "And it's not your fault, you did the right thing."
Abby felt someone tap her shoulder and she turned. She saw Becky and was shocked at first, saw the cut in her cheek and frowned. She was sorry she had hurt her so badly. She had t meant to, she just got angry and wanted to protect Sarah.
Abby glanced at the clip board," alright sure, we need to thin this out. You know who has any noticeable injuries, they should be first. We can have some wait in the living room and it will thin out the cluster in the kitchen. You and I can call them by names and make sure the lines stay moving." She glanced at Becky," let's get started."
"I already sent the two pregnant ones in. I'm surprised that they didn't go into labour with all this shock. They are close to the due date Brian said. Ones even past which is scary," Becky said looking away. She rubbed her hands along her legs. "Uh no one was bleeding and no one announced any bites. So that's good. They weren't visible if they had any. Rodriguez has the broken leg, but that was from part of the wall falling on her. Jadent has the gash on her forehead, she ran into a barn pillar. Besides that none really have noticeable wounds. No fresh ones."
She looked at the list on the clipboard. "Okay you take the first page, I'll take the second." Some names were already crossed off such as Thadd, Sam, and Georgia who weren't here. Amber, Paul, Bethany and Sarsh were still listed, but near the bottom. Louis, Brian, and Dean were crossed out, as was her own name. She wasn't bit, she knew that. Tyler, Cory, and a the rest of the dead were crossed off as well. There were still many names on the list.
"Rodriguez, can you and Grady, and Kalester go inside the living room. They can help you hobble in," Becky said to the crowd in the kitchen. She looked at Abby. "Call by last name, there so doubles of the first names. Only two sisters, so it's pretty straight forward."
Bethany pulled another body towards the stack, visibly disgusted by the thought of having to stack bodies of people they all knew, even though they really didn't know them. She wondered if this is what it was like working at a slaughterhouse. When Sarah spoke about letting the cheating cat out of the bag, she shrugged.
"Look, it's really none of my business. Whatever their relationship is ..well, it's out of my hands. But now you're looking at two people who are probably going to end up hating each other. When that happens, one is likely to leave. If that's the case, will it be Becky or Thad?"
She stood up and wiped her brow with the back of her forearm and continued speaking.
"If that's the case, which one will survive out there? I'd say Thad has a better chance on his own and is that someone you guys want to lose? Someone who can provide security? What does that Becky girl do to contribute to the group?"
She didn't mean to play devil's advocate here, but there was truth to her words. If Becky was a contributing member and Thad wanted to leave, she had to figure out what she was going to do also. She didn't really know these people and there were a few that irritated her for their decisions. She would likely leave with Thad if he decided to go, but that wasn't a decision that was coming to light.
"If he doesn't come back by tonight, I'll go and look for him. No need to risk others. I know what I'm doing out there and I'm sure as hell not going to be responsible for someone else's safety out there."
"Sorry for eavesdropping, but you actually have people outside this place?" Lloyd said, putting another body on the pile. "If I may, I'll throw my two pence out there. If these folks play it safe, they'll be fine. Sure the dead out number us, but they're also stupid. It's possible to avoid them if you know what you're doing." He grabbed another body and started pulling. "If these folks are the gung ho type to go into things guns blazing all the time. They're as good as dead." He stopped to blow a puff of smoke and then continued. "At least, that's my thought on the matter."
Sarah straightened up , hefting the legs of a dead woman, "No, you can't go alone, I caused all this ,I will go with you." She gave a look to Bethany saying it wasn't up for discussion. She glanced at Lloyd, "from what I know of him, Thad is one that can take care of himself, though, maybe we should wait through the night and start out at first light. We can get things settled here, and be ready to go first thing." She glanced at Paul, "looks like we are almost done."
Sarah didn't like to be the heavy, but she had taught kids, and could when she needed to. She glanced at Lloyd, "So, wanna tell me what brought you here? Passing by and just got caught up in this mess, or were you heading somewhere?" She was feeling him out, it kept her mind off her guilt.
"You don't know they'll hate each other. Thad may get over it," Paul said calmly. He was never one for relationships. Only been in a few before it started. Never had one cheat on him, or chested, so he didn't really know how to react. "We don't know if either will even want to leave. Times have changed, you need a pack like this to stay alive. I just hope both don't get reckless."
He helped move another body. "Becky has medical training, and helps on runs. She knows how to shoot, better than I do or some of the others. She isn't useless. Yes Thad might have more abilities, friends here, and support, but she isn't useless. Everyone contributes in their own way." He didn't know if this was true, he didn't know either well enough. That was just what he observed.
He looked around at the remaining corpses. "You both should wait it out. He didn't take anything, bike wasn't even fuelled. He has his gun, that's it. He'll be back, he's smart." Paul helped move another body. "Maybe you should take one of the soldiers if you go, Amber, and Garret. They are trained, and both know Thad."
He looked at Sarah. "You should stay if you can. Help with support. They will need you, as one of the leaders. This was a low to the group, shook everyone."
He looked at Lloyd as he spoke up. The man asked about people outside of the wall, almost as if he was in shock about it. "Yeah we have people out there. At least three or four right now including Thadd." Paul said calmly, "there three or four outside the gates dealing with the walkers right now too. The ones drawn by your fire."
"We have people out on runs. Look at how many mouths we have to feed. It's always growing. Most play it safe, we have to. Never go alone, in at least pairs. Don't get yourselves trapped," he said looking at Tyler on the pile of dead. "If only some would speak up about the injuries. They get reckless yes. You're looking at them getting reckless now."
He grabbed one of the last corpses. It was Cory, his roommate. He didn't know him that well, just that he was young, didn't know much. He was naive, and beloved what you told him. He liked to make jokes, but did what he was told. He wasn't the best shot, but helped out where ever he could. They often had garden shift together, or in the crop.
"This one is Cory. Hell he was just a kid, don't even know if he was eighteen yet. He didn't need to die like this. He was a good kid." Paul looked awa from the others. Sarah spoke to Lloyd and he watched them.
"I'm actually curious about this myself. I know you head a conflict and came to deal with that. But your not from here, America I mean. You only have the clothes on your back. You have another group somewhere? Are they out there? I don't know anyone who travels with out anything?"
Abby took her part of the list and stared at the names. " Alright, I can handle that. Do Brian and the others know we are doing this." Abby stood in the hall so she could see when one came out, she would send in another.
She tried to smile and reassure the ones who seemed the most rattled by all this. Louise kept moving, handing out drinks and working on an evening meal. Abby still felt like she should be doing more, but what was there to do?
Bethany looked at Sarah who was clearly not going to let her go on her own. She could either sneak out against her will or just wait until morning. With a sigh she looked towards Lloyd before turning back to the pile of bodies.
"Yea, alright. We'll wait it out until first light. He can hold his own out there."
When she turned back, she saw Paul talking about Cory and oddly, she felt a bond with the kid. He was one of the first faces she saw at the Cathedral and someone her and Thad had to rescue from the mall. She sighed and said nothing about Cory and their encounter, but instead listened a bit to Paul and Lloyd before turning back to Sarah. She said something and didn't know where this thought was coming from. It was oddly sentimental for her.
"We should have a ceremony for them all. You know, share some memories and what not before we burn them. Maybe scatter the ashes. It just seems proper."
