It had taken Jess and the group some time to find a proper home to take shelter in. Thankfully, they found one without running into too many problems. What they needed to do next however, was find supplies. It was disheartening to realize how quickly supplies could go. Honestly, she was more worried about her dog than anything. Cody was one of the few ties to her old life that she had, and one of the few links to sanity. The ones that she traveled with certainly helped her, even if she didn't show it. It took her a while to warm up to all of them, but eventually she had. And perhaps she warmed up to someone in particular a little too much.
Jess looked up at the sky, wondering what time it was exactly. It was close to evening time, that much she knew, and that made her nervous. She clenched her hands into fists tightly before releasing them and repeating the process several times. She had to keep herself calm, especially since it wasn't just her and her faithful dog. Jess looked back down and allowed her eyes to dart towards Abel's direction. Her gaze rested on him for a second or two before she looked off to the side towards the several houses left abandoned. She wondered briefly if they would be difficult to get into. Jess hoped not. The less noise they made, the better.
There were a couple of walkers a good ways down the road they were traveling on. Other than that, everything was quiet. Jess wondered if any walkers were left in the houses, or if the military had taken care of them. It was hard to tell, and perhaps there were a load of walkers even further down. Though as long as it wasn't a herd, Jess wasn't too frightened. She sighed to herself, hoping she hadn't just jinxed her and Abel by thinking of such a thing. Cody gave a low whine, as if sensing his owner's distress. He pressed his muzzle to the side of her leg, and Jess patted his head to reassure him that she was fine. "Good boy." Jess said quietly, scratching the Shepard behind the ear.
Jess strayed off to the side of the read, tipping her head back to look at the house nearest to her. She felt her heart ache for home and for normality. Jess crossed her arms across her chest and bit at her lower lip, fighting back the sudden urge to weep. Now's not the time damn it. She thought to herself. Jess refused to have Abel see her crying over something that she could not reclaim again. There was no point to it. She shook her head and took a deep breath before turning around to looked towards Abel.
"So...where do you think we should start?" Jess asked him nervously while she rubbed her arm. She dropped her gaze some, feeling her face warm up slightly just from speaking to Abel.
