The epidemic had totally changed everything, ever since its arrival to Britain it had infected thousands and now the dead owned the land, with only a lucky few barely surviving in what was left. Despite the failure of the military, William remained steadfast in hope of regaining a foothold in their efforts to reclaim the land, which so far had proved a difficult task to manage.
After the refugee camp fell, William had regrouped those alive and ordered those loyal to him to assist in escorting the civilians to safety. Now they traveled from place to place, never staying too long, with no true goal, except surviving. They were about thirty people, both military trained and ordinary people. With several vehicles, two tanks and one truck with a shovel in the front, they were prepped for anything that came their way. Whenever they choose a new route, they would have a backup plan and two meeting locations if things went bad.
On route A47 from Norwich to Sheffield, the group had stopped by the road, blocked by abandoned cars and a destroyed bridge. It was time to decide a new direction, and to where exactly they were heading next. William had been real silent on his decision, due to the fact that he wanted to go north, while also perhaps get the chance to see if his family was still in his hometown Sheffield. The others had begun to doubt his decision, and moral was getting low.
William knew he couldn`t keep this up forever, if they didn`t find a safe place soon, then none would take part on his mission anymore. Hopefully Scottland could provide better protection, as the south was crowded by undead, but it was far and winter was already around the corner. Last time they met a herd of walkers they had almost all died, he had to make sure that didn`t happen again.
“I suggest we go back, then take the small road through Wisbech, before moving toward Peterborough. Hopefully we can get there before nightfall, if not then there should be someplace safe to stay while we wait for dawn.” William said and pointed at the map, which lay in front of him at the top of the hood on the car. The most important people had gathered to hear the plan, officers and civilian officials alike. Some agreed, but some were more skeptical.
“And what is your plan next exactly? To have this group wander aimlessly around? Don`t you see, the people are tired. They need someplace safe, somewhere they can call home!” One of the civilians interrupted, a former politician by the name of John Wylard.
“You know as much as I, that even if we make one place ours, it will eventually fall to crumble. No, my mission is to get everybody to safety and clear this country of vermin like those undead! We are at war, and if we are to succeed, we have to stick together.” William answered firmly, trying to convince the man, and those that listened that it was for the best.
“What war? Have you not noticed? The country no longer exists, there is no government anymore. All there is, is us and them!” He spoke desperately, trying to convince the Major to change his plans, to see clearly what most of the others wanted.
With a deep sigh, William looked at the man, then turned his gaze at the others who had listened in. Stepping forward into the circle of people, William made a speech. “You are right, there is only us, which is why we have to keep fighting. The country is what we make it now; therefore we must be united on this. Look I know many of you are tired, that you want somewhere to bunker down, but there is no safety here, not anymore. I have a plan, I am on a mission, there is a destination, but you just have to be patient. Hopefully, before winter sets in, we`ve found a place, at least for a time.”
Just as he finished, he walked back and grabbed the map. “Alright, let`s move people!” He ordered and went ahead to his truck, where his comrades awaited him. William could hear people talking in the background, not all was happy, but at least the speech had somewhat worked. They were trying at least, and it was all he was asking for.
