The new morning found Andrei sleeping on the sofa that was blocking the door to the apartment he and Holly slept in. Both of them were exhausted and the traps made it possible for the two to get some rest without having to keep watch. However, Andrei slept with the katana in his hands, right hand resting on the hilt, ready to spring into action at any minute.
The sunlight that shone over his face woke Andrei up, and he waited a few seconds before moving, listening and looking at his surroundings, making sure everything was in order. Rising from the sofa, he began stretching, joints popping with every movement. Holly didn't seem to be up. Silently, Andrei geared up and opened the door enough to slip outside and leave the building. He moved around it, looking through windows into rooms, to check if there was anything of worth inside. One apartment caught his eye, the across the hallway from theirs. It looked like it was a former dojo. Something inside Andrei drove him to want to get inside.
The door would be too loud and complicated, but a window was easier. He drew one of the short blades and used it as a sort of crowbar to force the window open. After a few minutes of struggling, the mechanism keeping it closed gave way, the wood cracking loudly. Without wasting a second, he jumped in, and waited for walkers to come, but none did. There wasn't even the smell of rot inside, but the characteristic smell of an enclosed space. He did a quick sweep, to be sure, and then opened the windows, to let some fresh air in.
The door could be unlocked from the inside, which he did, and headed back to where he slept. Andrei left a note on the door for Holly: "Find me across the hallway". and he returned to the dojo. Inside, he lay his weapons near a wooden dummy and began a series of blocks and blows, as he had been taught so long ago. At first he went slowly, waiting a while after each strike.
