Nate pulled the triuck to the side of the road. Cars were on either side, the summer heat coming down. Shit how long had it been? Since the left bear lake, since the explosion. He remembered snow on the ground as they left colorado.
He looked at Mia and waited for Jake to stop behind him. It was as safe as they were going to get at this point, nothing could change that. He grabbed his axe, rifel, and the map they had been using for the past three or four weeks. Placing all on the hood of the truck he waited for Mia and Jake to gather around.
Unfolding the map he looked at the various circles. One big one around the cabin, a few smaller ones splitting off from that.
"What's the plan today," he asked both of them, "we swung back at the 86 so that's a no go. Pretty much anything east of the cabin we've cleared four or five times. Supplies are running out from the truck, we are running out of options."
He looked up at them both, "48 was to heavily polluted, we had to reverse to even get out of there." He pointed to section on the map, "we could take the farm road back to the small town we found, check over the shops again. Honestly at this point we aren't going to find anyone. We are going in circles, fuel and resources all but wasted."
He knew what they both would say, that they needed to find the others. At this point if they hadn't they most likely weren't. Anyone who was at the cabin was gone, they had to face that.

Jake was devastated as he slowly drove away from the cabin. He couldn’t stop but look in his mirror, hoping he would see someone. He hoped Veran and Dale would be safe, but he was slowly losing hope. Jake softly hit the steering wheel with his fist, partly of anger and partly to let his sadness out. He was alone in his car and now he was free to let all his tears flow. “I’m a fucking curse, I lose everyone I love!” Jake yelled to himself. The road was starting to get blurry from all his tears.
After some more crying and sobbing the tears stopped. His heart was broken but he knew crying wouldn’t help. So all he could do was hope that they made it out safely, he knew that it was only a little chance, but if he didn’t keep that in mind he would just go back and risk his own life.
Some moments later he saw how Nate stopped the truck and parked in on the side of the road. Jake looked n the mirror, his eyes were still a bit red, so he wiped them once more. Then he stopped, parked and turned off the engine. Then he got out and joined Nate and Mia.
He heard how Nate asked what the plan was. He gave them some options. But then he said searching for others was pointless now. Jake closed his eyes, that comment made him angry and sad, but deep down he knew Nate was right. “I……” Jake tried as he paused once more, feeling a wave of pain and sadness coming up. He shook his head and pusehd his feelings down. “I don’t think we should head back to that town, we checked the shops.” He replied. “Let’s just try a new area.” He added in a very soft tone. What he just said wasn’t what he really wanted, finding Veran and all the others, that would be his plan. His mind was fighting, part wanted to just split with Nate and Mia and go back. The other part was the wisest, and said forget about them go to a new area. Mia and Nate where his friends, he wouldn’t just split off, if he didn’t find the others he would have lost everything. For now he just remained silent and waited on their reaction.
Mia hadn't said much on th drive. She was concerned about Jake. He was not reacting to all this well. He didn't cry in front of them, but she saw how his eyes were red after he had been alone. She knew that sort of grief, knew he was blaming himself.
Nate spoke about moving on a bit, widening their circle, so to speak. Since they had basically exhausted their resources in the area, they didn't have much choice."personally, I don't think we have much choice, widen our search a bit, probably a good idea, all things considered."
He looked at the pair as they joined him. For three weeks they had been searching for the others, they had to do something new. "We may have to face the fact. We may never see them again." It was cold but it had to be said. "We are nearly out of fuel, resources. It's been over three weeks, we need to move on. I don't want to, but it may have to happen."
He rested his arms on the hood. "If it was up to me I'd head north. Back up to Canada. It's more secure, more closed in. Filled with animals, very few people means very few walkers. Think Bear lake enhanced by ten for how secluded it is. It beats driving in circles here. We aren't going anywhere that we haven't been before. We could expand our area, but it will pick over fast. We should just leave."

Jake only heard half of what Mia said, his mind was in a different place, once again thinking of Veran, Dale and the others. He started to think it was a bad idea to leave them, but he also knew they had to go or all of them would have died. He just shook his head, trying to get rid of those thoughts.
He looked at Nate as he replied to them. What he said was as if he shot an arrow right in the heart of Jake. What was that for a reaction, how could he be so cold, was all what Jake was thinking, he didn’t even hear the rest of Nate his plan. “Nate….” Jake said as he looked at him. “I know I have to get over them and I know I’m probably a mess and I fucking also know we might not find them, but there is no damn reason to be so cold.” Jake replied in a stern tone. The reaction of Nate caused him to snap, all the bottled emotions came out. Yes he cried on the way but most of his emotions were still bottled up. “Show some emotion, the world has gone to shit, but they where our friends, even more than that to me at least, doesn’t it hurt you?” he asked as he kept his angry tone up. “What if Mia would have been back there?” he added. “Huh?” Then he paused for a brief second trying to calm himself. “I should have stayed there, might be dead now, but I wouldn’t feel so guilty.” Jake said as he looked up in the sky, his tone was slowly changing. He stayed quiet for some seconds and sighed. “Sorry, I had no reason to yell at you like that, I know we our running low on supplies and that we need a solution, but it hurts.” He said with sadness in his tone.
“All I wanted to say is that some tact would have been in place.” Jake said finally looking down, with watery eyes. He did his best to not cry again, but he nearly couldn’t keep his tears inside, but just enough. “I’m okay with whatever you guys want, you are the last friends I have, wouldn’t want to lose either of you.” He said very softly.
Mia stared at Nate. He was talking about cuttin there loses and heading North. It just struck her in that moment that he was giving up. Before she could say a word, Jake exploded at him. He had every right to feel that Nate was being cold about the others. Part of her agreed with him about Nate, but she could see Nate's point as well. They were running out of options, she knew that, but he had to have realized how his words would sound to Jake.
She leaned against the truck for a moment, feeling the mounting pressure being laid upon her. She had to make a choice, and it felt like a terrible burden." I, I don't know what to say, " Jake was right, would Nate just walk away if she was lost? Mia was afraid of that answer after seeing and hearing him a moment ago." We need gas, and food, that needs to come first, we can't help anyone if we are starving."
Nate wasn't shocked when Wyatt exploded at him. He saw it coming, the man still had hope. Some of his words had hurt. Nate didn't want to abandon search but after weeks and weeks it was time to give up. They had stuck close and explored as far as anyone could get. If the others weren't around then they probably cut their losses and left too, or worse, they were dead.
Nate looked at the man. "Think about it. Why haven't we seen any of them, at all since the attack. If we haen't came across them, or any sign at all then we aren't going to find it. Either they cut their losses, like we have to, or they are gone. We would have found them by now otherwise. If they left us, why can't we do the same?"
He looked down, "I wouldn't want to leave them, but we have to. They are gone. Hykeem, Sterling, Dale, all gone. Hykeem was one of my only friends. I knew him longer than anyone else here. I don't want to face the fact but he's gone. Either he's dead or moved on. If he can do it than so can we. If it was Mia looking for me I'd want the same thing. I wouldn't want to find them dead, or keeps searching until all hope is gone. We have to move on, either that or we will just keep going in circles."
He let out a sigh, "listen I've been here. When I first came here to amer, I was with a group. We were kidnapped and held hostage for weeks. I left behind friends, a girlfriend. I saved myself. I've experienced this loss. I know that we need to move. We have to face the facts the fact that we can't save them. You'll get over it, trust me." He looked away, "I did eventually. You can too. It's hard but it's what happens. I don't want to be so cold but I can't sit around forever."
He looked at Mia, "she's right we need fuel and food. Let's find a place to get that."

Jake heard how Mia said she didn’t know what to say. He knew she was a sweet girl and she didn’t want to hurt either him or Nate. She was a good friend, one that understood his feelings. Nate was a cool dude too, they also became friends, but he was more to the point. Jake nodded as Mia replied saying the needed gas and supplies, since they wouldn’t be able to help other people if they starved themselves. “You got a point there.” Jake said as he looked at her.
Just as Jake was slowly feeling better, Nate replied with yet again in a cold way. Jake sighed and shook his head. “Yeah Nate, it’s enough now, I know that we have to go on dammit, my point is that it fucking hurts.” He said trying to keep his tone normal. His next sentence Nate showed more feelings, telling how he also lost people. “See that wasn’t so hard..” He replied in a soft tone. “Look like I said earlier, we are all that is left of our group, I consider both of you close friends, losing all those people only brings us closer to each other, so let’s make sure we survive and stay together.” Jake said softly.
Then Nate told a story about what happened before bear lake. Jake placed a hand on his shoulder, since it was a pretty heavy story. “Sorry to hear that and if you say I’ll get over it, I’ll trust you.” He said looking at Nate before removing his hand. Then Nate agreed with Mia on finding supplies as well. “So let’s decide on the plan then.” He said looking at the map.
Mia listened to them both. Nate had told her about the female he had been with before, so that was not a suppose to her. They had all done shit to survive, good and bad. It was what they all were reduced to in this cruel world.
She leaned over and put an arm around Jake. She missed the others too. Dale was a good kid. He had made her laugh. Hykeem, damn, he had got her to bear lake. They were close, family! She felt the loss, but maybe it was years of medical training, but she could push past the pain. She loved Jake, how he could feel through all this bullshit. She rubbed his back with one hand, then let go." Alright, we've used all the resources close, so we branch out, we got enough for maybe two more days. I say we head north, like Nate suggested. Seasons are changing and we may run into less dead further up. When it got cold at Bear Lake, we saw fewer and fewer dead and the ones we did, seemed slowed down." She looked at Nate and Jake," so, that's my idea, what do you guys think? We can find some sparsely located area and hold up for a bit then start fresh?"
Dannie had been on her own for a few weeks and she had exhausted nearly all her resources trying to find everyone again. She had just about given up until she saw movement on the side of the road. The truck looked familiar and she really had no idea where she was. She had been foraging the best she could. She even went back to the house to try and find Sterling, but when she got there, it was overrun with walkers. She just hoped he made it out okay with Liz. She hoped he was still alive. Maybe she would find him again, one day. Slowly, she rolled up to where the group stood and the first one she saw was Mia, then Nate, then Jake. Standing there talking.
With a huge grin on her face, she rolled up slowly, looking worn down and like she desperately needed a shower. She rolled down her window and looked out to them as she spoke. She was probably more happy to see them then they could imagine.
Nate had half the nerve just to punch Jake in the face. He was pissing him off, saying how cold Nate was being Why did they think they hadn't found anyone? Everyone else just left given up as they had to. Or they were dead. Nate clenched his fists, as the man spoke. Did he not think he didn't feel, tat he didn't loose anyone. He had friends there, Hykeem. He was his only friend, came from bear lake for Mia and Nate. Now he was gone, Nate wanted to find him, but he knew Hykeem. He would search as long as he could, but evntually he would move on too. Jake had knew Veran for only a little while, they may had been close and attached fast but Jake had to move on they all did.
He was glad the man could reason with him. After nate told him about the past he seemed to be more resonable. Nate nodded and looked around. They needed a plan on what they would do next. It was decided they needed more supplies. At least they could all agree on that. Now they'd needed a place to start. He looked down at the map.
"Okay so we have most of the radius around the cabin pretty much cleared out. If we go down back over here I think it leads to a rest stop that may not be cleared out or picked over. I think there's as small town we can get to off of there too." The way he pointed to was farther up the state, near the northern border. He hoped that he could eventually get them to go all the North. It would take time, but that's what he wanted to do. He knew it would be safe and secure up there. It would be a good four or fives day drive, maybe more or less.
He was to focuse on the map that he didn't hear the car pull up. When the voice spoke he pulled out the axe from the hood. He looked up and saw that it was Dannier. How, how did she find them? This was incredible, maybe the others were out there, were they alone like her? A bigger group would be easier to find.
"Dannie, how did you find us," he asked, "we've been searching for ever for everyone. Did you go back to the cabin? It was over run, the plan didn't work. It's good to see you. What happened in the weeks we were seperated, have you found anyone else?"

Jake smiled and felt a little better as he felt Mia her arm on his back. Like he said earlier Mia and Nate were all that he had, he wouldn’t lose anymore friends, so protecting them was a must now. He felt how she rubbed is back and smiled once more. “Just what I needed.” He added as he felt her letting go. “Thanks Mia.”
Then he listened as Mia explained where she wanted to go, followed by Nate his comment. Jake stayed quiet for a brief moment. “Hmm well that small town sounds like a plan, most of those still have some supplies left.” Jake said as he looked from Nate to Mia.
Then he heard a car, before he could do anything, it pulled over next to them. Jake wanted to grab his gun, but felt his fear going away and being replaced by joy as he saw Dannie. Nate overwhelmed her with a lot of question, but Jake wanted to know the answers too. “Yeah what he said.” Jake added with a smile. “All I can add is that I’m happy you made it.”
Mia relaxed a bit, seeing that Jake and Nate seemed to be coming to some sort of terms about all this. She knew it was hard, he'll, she felt it too. Mia didn't let herself think about all the what ifs. She just held hope that if it was meant to be , the others would find them.
Jake agreed on the small town and she nodded her approval. It was the. That they all heard it. The sound of the engine, crunch of tires on the gravel. She spun and recognized the cruiser. As Dannie spoke to them, she shook her head and grinned. Jake and Nate spoke there awe and happiness that she found them, but Mia, professed her worry," have you seen anyone else? hykeem?, Dale, the kid?" She stepped towards the car," we been circling the area but you're the only one we've seen." She knew Nate wanted to head out, so she didn't ask anything else," Nate, we still hitting that small town?" She just wanted to get moving, to feel like she was doing, something.
Dannie turned off the engine and got out of the car. She wanted to save as much gas as she could. She was able to fill two gas cans by siphoning from other cars, but she had already used up one of them. Her ammo was running low as was her water. She was almost completely out of food and her body was feeling the effects from severe rationing. She felt tired almost all the time now.
She smiled wide as she got out, approaching only three of them. As she looked around she saw they were the only ones left and she shook her head.
"I haven't seen anyone. I tried to go back to find everyone, but I got lost. No GPS, no maps, it's hard to find your way back, you know?"
She was hoping she would find stragglers from their group walking along the roads and most of all she was hoping to find Sterling. But once again, she lost him. It made her sad in that sense, but he stayed alive before, she was certain he could do it again, even though he had been shot. She hoped that nurse could keep them both alive.
"I've just been driving. Trying to get supplies, but there's so little left here. I don't know where to go. Atlanta is only a few hours away, but after what happened in Chicago, I don't dare go back to a big city. I don't even know if we should stay and wait for the others. It's a miracle I found you guys at all. I was about to give up and head to the coast."
Dannie's last comment confirmed what nate was saying. They were leaving, breaking up the group. People were moving on, giving up hope. If Dannie could, so could they. He wanted to make a comment on, say something to Jake but chose not to. He didn't want a fight just to prove he was right, or worse have Jake break down on them.
He turned his attention back to the map. Georgia was marked on it, but the area and area surrounding it nate ha put an X through. There was no way he was going there, something so big. He didn't need that, not now. It would to over run, and probably picked over by the time they got there. The coast was an option, where Dannie was headed.
"Yeah the town should still be our plan of attack right now. It's good for supplies and will let us regroup our thoughts. Ultimately I'd still like to go north. It's secure. We know the cold slows them, think bear lake times ten. Winter for nearly seven of the months, maybe eight. Near a lake, logging and lumber. Low population and wild life. I see no downside. If we hadn't left, thinking to find a cure down in the states then I'd still be up there right now. It's getting to dense here, that's our best option long term."
He was done, giving up. He wanted to go home, to be somewhere he recognized. Something he was used to. Freezing over sweating, ice fishing, his home town. He didn't want any of this here, never had. He was just following a group and surviving. Now he wanted to go home, and had the option to, no one was stopping him.
"Why were you going to the coast Dannie? What was the goal there?" If she had a reason to leave, or knew something they could always head towards the coast. If Sterling or Verran were going there, or had wanted to they could follow.

Jake was so happy when he saw Dannie that he forgot to ask about the other. But it didn’t take long before Mia asked about them. “Yes anyone?” he added softly. He heard how she answered and he just sighed. He knew like they both already said that they had to let go, but it was so freaking hard.
He listened to Nate as he once more explained his plan and then to Dannie as spoke about the coast en how she was unsure if they still had to wait on the others. Followed by Nate replying why she wanted to go there. “Look, I have no clue which of the two is better, but I realized that it’s been too long indeed, all I can hope is that they made it all out and that they are safe now.” Jake replied softly, it was hard for him to say it but he had to. “It’s no secret that I have a hard time letting go, but it’s probably what they would want us to do, I hope they will do the same and that they can move one.” He added. “And maybe we’ll get lucky and run into them.” He said looking at them. "Besides i'm happy i still have you guys." he added with a smile.
Mia stared at Nate, just seconds ago he was pushing for them to head North, and now suddenly he was asking about her coast plan. She looked at Jake and gave him a half smile. At this point, she didn't care, she just wanted someone to make up their fuckin mind.
Mia's arm was out of the sling, her shoulder still stiffened up on her and was tender, but it just needed more time. She rolled it now to ease of the tension in it. She glanced at Dannie, then Nate, 'well, are we going to vote on it? I say we just go hit the town, hold up and figure it out from there, we can't go much longer without food or water." She was all for doing what Nate wanted, he knew what he was talking about with the cold, but they had to have ways to stay warm, keep from getting sick in those temperatures. "Maybe we can find supplies for cold weather, along the way, if we choose north."
Dannie was certainly used to the northern cold. She grew up in the nasty winters of Chicago. The Colorado winter didn't bother her either. It was her dream to retire in Florida one day, but that was all before the world went to shit. Did she like cold weather? Not particularly, but he was right. It slowed the walkers.
"I ...I didn't really have a plan on the coast. I was thinking maybe South or North Carolina, but I don't really know what I'll find. Where were you thinking up north?"
It would make the most sense for them to go north and if Nate had a plan, she was willing to listen. It wasn't going to be long now before the winter was on them and they would have to get somewhere quick before they were completely snowed in.
"Mia's right. We could get supplies on the way. I'd like to think the more remote we are, the better chances we have, but hell, the cabin proved that otherwise. The best laid plans seem to be going out the window."
Dannie didn't have a plan with the coast, that was good. They could still go North if no one objected. For now they just needed supplies. They could always decide later. They needed to get there anyway, and food and water to survive. Mia was right, they needed jackets, toques, blankets, fire, all of that to keep warm. He would have some at home, enough for everyone but it may get cold along the way.
"Okay so let's vote then. I agree we should go to the town for now, get supplies and all we can from there," he said folding up the map, "but ultimately I would like to head north. To Canada. I know a place up there, a place I think will be safe. Secluded, but not wide open like the cabin. There's even a jail not far from the town I want to go to up north, it would have fences and wall to keep them out. But it's probably the opposite direction everyone wants to go.
He stepped back, "can we all agree on going to the town on the map? Regrouping our thoughts and getting supplies. We need food and water no matter what we do. This can give everyone time to think, think it through. Maybe someone has a better plan." He tucked the map away and grabbed his axe. Moving to the door of the truck he waited for everyone's answer.
"We should go down to two cars, syphine the gas from the other one. The truck is loade with what little supplies we have left but we can easily change them over to another. If we found a van, or a camper it would be more beneficial, carry the supplies and the people. But two cars, scrap the one."
Post by Jake Porter on Oct 4, 2015 18:33:55 GMT -5
Nate listened to Mia as she spoke. He could only agree with her supplies were running out, so voting would be a good plan. He also nodded in agreement as she spoke about fnding supplies on the yway to keep them all warm.
Then he listened to Dannie and looked at Nate as he replied. “Yes sounds like a plan, so we go to the town first, get everything clear in our minds and hope to find supplies, from there we decide where to head.” Jake recapitulated. “Yup I agree.” He added.
Then he listened as Nate spoke about the cars. “Well we have 3 now, the truck, Dannie’s and mine.” He replied. “But I think it would be wise to keep at least two, not just go in one.” He added. “If we need to search for supplies then we could always do it with two cars and clear several areas.”
Then he was quiet for a brief seconds. “I know it’s not easy with gas ect., but still I would like to keep two, so I say the truck and mine then, if everyone can agree on that.” He asked.
Shauna Kelly: That helped, thank you
